(Probably silly) OEM Ultegra Brifters Question

I picked up a while back some OEM Ultegra brifters.

They require the brifters attaching to the hoses/callipers.

The hoses have the barbed inserts already fitted and the brifters have a yellow stopper fitted.

All simple so far …..

The barbed inserts look like they have a thin film(?) over the ends to stop the presumably filled hoses from leaking. I cannot find any mention of this anywhere though

I take it that I just gently scrape this off, remove yellow stopper, jam it all together, tighten nut and hey presto.

Is it that simple?

When I fitted my new ones I had to shorten the hoses by a few inches si had the added step of cutting the hose and tapping in a new barb, but after that yep exactly as you state, olive is pre-installed in the brifter, and they just work, been faultless for two years now .

Thanks Bazz.

Gargantuan frame means I should get away without cutting hoses 🤞🏻

Merlin?

Also have the brifters and calipers, with the hose attached to calipers. I think it's sposed to be that simple, but i'm not convinced.
Have fed the hose thro frame and forks, but hoses still too long so will need to shorten before attaching to brifter. They have come w extra barb and olives etc.
Not sure I can cut to length and get good attachment to brifter without getting air in the system, so have ordered Epic's Road bleed kit just in case, and am assuming I'll need to do a bleed to get air out at the lever.

@susepic that's exactly what I was expecting, air getting in somewhere, but it just didn't, I was quite surprised, but happy none the less.

Susepic, yes they were from Merlin.

I may invest in a bleed kit just in case!

@bazz thanks, that's great to know. Might give it a go tomorrow. Have been delaying and pretending it's the wet weather, but bleeding road brakes looks a bit more of a faff than mtbs. If I don't need to all the better!

Good luck w yours @letmetalktomark

I’ve never needed to scrape the film off. Guess something inside the brighter pierces it when you tighten up the nut.

Ran mine for a few months like that when I couldn’t be arsed to shorten the hoses… 🤣

I’d either pierce or cut off the seal - it has been known for the piece of the seal to migrate and cause the brakes to lock. Shouldn’t need a bleed kit, capillary action should keep the fluid in the hose during fitting and avoid pressing the lever. Clamp/hold the hose vertically when you cut it, fit the barb etc.
