Trying to fit a DT Swiss axle to a new frame and when I tighten the axle I cannot get a suitible point between where the wheel has sideways movement and where the freehub locks. I have checked that the drive side washer is in place correctly within the freehub and all the bearings are in decent nick. Please help me.

Is the plastic seal between the freehub/hub-shell seated correctly? If so, then i'd suspect the outer freehub bearing, hold the brake end of the axle when you try to turn the freehub, if you don't stop the axle from turning it can seem as if the bearing is fine.

Sounds like the spacer that goes on before the free hub is missing. Take it apart and check it is there. Its really easy to take apart. Have a look here for instructions.
