So Iv'e just replaced the bearings in an old Hope pro2 rear hub (including freehub). Got it all back together but the cassette seems a bit sticky/notchy and spins a bit with the wheel a little bit. I've only spun it it the frame, without a chain so maybe it'll be fine when the bikes built up but it just feels a bit weird. I've double checked the bearings, the spacer is in place between hub and free hub bearing, the rubber freehub seal is set with the proper tool and clicked in properly. All the pawls are fine.
Is there something I've missed? Anyone experienced this?
rubber freehub seal is set
Did you install this the right way round? I vaguely remember putting it in the wrong way round years ago on my xc hub which gave exactly the same symptoms.
If you're certain you've got the right spacers in the right place and the rubber seal fully seated, I'd also be checking that the bearings are fully seated too.
Sometimes a new bearing can feel a bit stiff, so best case scenario take it for the ride and all will be well. Less good case scenario is that one of the freehub bearings has gone in squint like bigyinn suggests and is binding a bit to the axle.
I assume I have the seal right. Grooved side on the inside, flat side on the outside. Tried it the other way but it didn't click in the other way round. I'll double check the bearings are seated properly but they looked OK. Cheers for the input!
If the seal is correctly “clicked” in place, the spacer is ok and the bearings are sound I’d be checking the axle isn’t worn.
I’ve had to replace a couple over the years.
How old were the bearings you took out?
Not sure how old the bearings were, I'm fixing up a mates bike, its a 2009 Marin so the bearings could be as old as 9 years I guess! The freehub bearings were ok it was just the hub bearings were a bit rough but thought I may as well replace all as they came as a complete set.
does the metal tube between the inner freehub bearing & the outer besring have the tiniest amount of movement? if it's tight between the bearings it can bind a little.
Ive seen the hope video, and followed it correctly as far as I can tell.
Too much grease on the ratchet maybe?
I had a Q.relase ,drive side end cap thingy that was worn ,which caused similar problems - only when wheel was tight in frame . It had a raised profile IIRC. , which was worn. Quick fix was a thin washer behind end cap. Try that perhaps.
Are you 100% sure you've seated all of the bearings properly, espeiclaly the d/s hub bearing? If they aren't pressed in fully, then the freehub will drag more than it should.
Have a good check here to make sure everything is in the right place:
Bearing all look and feel properly seated. I'm thinking maybe I've damaged 1 or more Pawl springs when I put them back in so the Pawls are pushing out too much
The best suggestion I can offer is to take the freehub off and then go round all the bearings you replaced and carefully tap the outer races with a punch & hammer to make sure they are properly seated, one may not be fully home.
Ill try that to make sure its not the bearings.
cracked freehub body?
Any joy?
Nope! Ive taken it apart and put it back together a few times now, bearings all seem fine. Im totally stumped. Cars just blown up though so car hunting will have to take priority.
Why not give Hope a call? They're pretty helpful normally...
