I’m in the market for a do it all bike and Privateer are doing some decent looking deals on the 141, I’ve always liked the look of them so I’m hovering over the button.
Question is, how are people finding them, I haven’t heard of any frame failures and most reviews are glowing in every respect apart from weight which doesn’t put me off, also has anyone heard of any 141 revisions?
Thanks in advance.
I was surprised how big they feel. My lad has a P2 141 and it feels plenty big for me at 6'0
The finish seems great and all the bits are really nicely done and finished.
I've only ridden it a tiny bit but I'm quite impressed overall. It just feels 'right'
We've got the mint green one and is covered in Ridewrap.
For full disclosure, he's sponsored by Privateer so take what I say with that in mind, but I'm quite taken with his.
So much so that I'd very much hope at the end of his deal with the bike, we can buy it as he really loves it and even after only 2 weeks, wants to keep it.
I have a 161 (so not the 141 obviously). I thin it is great - I bought it a long travel bike for going to Morzine with.
But it probably actually climbs better than my FlareMax.
They are pretty solid and it seems like they can be abused.
The geometry seems to have been thought out well - and I had huge reservations about the short seated reach - but ,if anything, I will now be moving the Cotic saddle froward a bit to give similar dimensions.
Allegedly the harder you push them, the better they get.
Weekly's son is probably a better judge - but he seems to have no problems sending the 141
Thanks, that’s very encouraging, hopefully your lad does well on the bike, I vaguely remember seeing him and his mate getting them on ig.
BTW - I am not sponsored by Privateer 🙂
I am 6ft 2 and ride a P4 - unlike Weeksy, I wouldn't want it smaller
Got a 141 P3 and just 5' 9" or 173cm. Was on the border between sizes but now decided I should have definitely gone for P2 for my preferred riding and height. It's got a massive wheelbase and ploughs like a tank (in a good way). I'd not ridden it much with a delay in delivery and injury so didn't take the option to return and swap, just been getting into it the last few months.
I'm 6'2" on a P4 and it feels like I'm back on the right size bike after going smaller for a while.
It's a really nice place to sit so it makes pedalling and climbing tolerable. It feels like I've got all the benefits of modern geometry without going too far.
It needed some attention when it arrived. The chain was too long, the tubeless tape was hanging off, the rubber seatstay protection was lifting up and needed gluing down. The cable routing isn't great but I've managed it.
I've only been out on it twice. One long pedally ride around the Peak which was my longest ride in years and one day chucking it down steep stuff in Wharny. No complaints yet.
I'm just short of 6ft and have ridden a P3 141 for just over a year now, Still love it. Fits me spot on, Climbs well in a 'just plod on' kinda way..I can clear most of Hebdens climbs anyway though its at its best getting thrown down stuff. Feels big on tight trails but thats just me being rubbish TBH. Usually rode in Calderdale ect with the odd uplift day and a week in the Alps and I've no major issues specific to this bike other than the Hunt trailwide rear wheel loosing spoke tension and eventually cracking.
My partner raced the SDA Innerleithen DH race on his 141! Under biked for sure, but ride what you’ve got and all that… He jumped the road gap on it too 😂
Thanks for the replys peeps, I’ve ordered a P3 Raw 36, I currently have a Large V2 Sentinel and a Large Bird Forge so size should be ideal, I’ll probably swap some bit out from the get go, maybe brakes and put an Axs mech on so less cable to worry about. I’ve a few trips away this Year and all being well I’ll be taking this bike to Finale twice 😎 Off to Inners tomorrow for the weekend, can’t wait!
Good work. I wish my mate was this decisive. He's been on about them for weeks and weeks. They'll be all gone before he makes his mind up.
I currently have a Large V2 Sentinel
Eh? you can run the V2 sentinel with 140 or 150 in the back (or more with a longer stroke shock). Why have you replaced what you have with something not as good? 🤔
It’s not a bike I’d pick, it weighs as much, if not more than most enduro bikes yet doesn’t have the travel & im not sure I’d want to lug a 35lb trail bike around for every day riding, sounds like misery.

Nice job... nice...
I have flirted with the idea of swapping the Slayer for a 161 to feel part of the 'team' but i do love the Slayer and there's no used P2s about...

And the 2 month itch is back 🤣
And the 2 month itch is back
Nah, it's only because of the lads affiliation to the brand through Katy, if it wasn't for that i wouldn't have considered swapping the Slayer. When i was trading the Trek i did try and make a few deals and almost had a 161, but that fell through so ended up with the Slayer, which i do absolutely love, espeically now i've put the CodeRs on
Had anyone tried a 141 and a Bird Aether 9? On paper fairly similar so interested in a comparison as I'm pretty much decided it's going to be one of them.
I wanted to try both but they were out of stock when I was looking so got a sentinel instead.
I think the aether frame (in alloy) is lighter than the 141 and the cable routing is a bit easier. I think the 141 is a bit more aggressive downhill. I loved my aether 7 - but my sentinel is easier on the body over rough stuff.
I wonder if the 141 is almost comparable to the Bird AM9….

Geometry trumps weight every single time. People need to stop obsessing over the number on the scales.
TBH i've just picked up the 141 about 5 mins ago to put on the workstand and it doesn't feel particularly heavy.. I'll weigh mine in a bit against my carbon slayer.

You say that like the geometry on it is revolutionary. It’s pretty much standard these days. Hell, my 120mm bike is more aggressive in numbers (and weighs nearly 4kg less).
Yeah, I can see many positives to riding a 15-16kg trail bike, which weighs the same as my Madonna 😆
(and weighs nearly 4kg less).
Surely that's the components fitted (and associated price of course) rather than just the frame of a 141, there's no way a 141 frame is 4kg heavier 😀
So you've got better/lighter components fitted than theirs
Mine is heavier than a regular 141 because of the coil shock and the Enduro rather than Trail wheels. Plus the standard Schwalbe tyres are porky but tough.
My Mrs has named it the Batman Bike.

I couldn't resist it when the sale started. I'd been eyeing it up for ages.
I won't be weighing it. I don't have any scales and I don't care what the number is. As long as your arse, your feet and your hands are in the right place, that's much more important than a few lbs. My tools, water and whatever bag I carry makes more difference than switching to a lighter frame or spending a fortune on plastic bits.
These Maxxis Dissector's feel so fast on a big day out. I might buy some of the Trail wheels to fit them to so I don't have to switch tyres so often.

I did just say 'modern geometry' not futuristic geometry. It's not like when I bought my Geometron in 2017.

Don’t buy the Hunt Trailwides, they are not up to the job. The rear would not stay tensioned on mine and a mates with loads of cracks developing on both. They will warranty them, but what’s the point.
I’ve done the two wheelset thing with mine, with similar weight wheels, but with grippy tyres and insets on one set and less grippy tyres and no inserts in the other set. Both wheels ready to ride with just a cassette swap.
For me the weight of a bike is mostly in the wheels and tyres.

We have a new set of hand built 29 boost DT Swiss EX511 built onto DT Swiss 350 hubs with an XD driver. They were daughters spare race wheels which have never been needed. Now she is travelling for the next 18 months and not competing they will be surplus to requirements.
If anyone is interested let me know before I get round to advertising them
Had anyone tried a 141 and a Bird Aether 9? On paper fairly similar so interested in a comparison as I’m pretty much decided it’s going to be one of them.
I've had a ML Aether 9 for a year and a mate recently bought a P3 141. I've only had a brief ride on it but it felt very similar which isn't surprising considering the geometry. It's noticeably heavier but some of that will be it's heavy duty standard tyres.

IMO, Heavy trail bikes suck the fun out of mellow trails. My Stumpy has the same geo as my old enduro, 30mm less travel and it flies.
I had a 161, even after shimming the back end so it didn't seize up when you torque the pivot bolts, it never rode like an enduro bike should of. Messed with the super deluxe a lot, had it tuned, still meh. Fitted an X2 air, slightly better, still felt average. Fitted an ohlins coil, much better. Got bored of the tinkering and screwing about, sent it back and bought a Geometron.
it never rode like an enduro bike should of
go on . . . (genuinely interested given the usually glowing reviews and the fact it’s high on my want list)
It felt harsh, could never get the back to sit down and plough through stuff, would always fidget around.
Bearings felt pretty ropey in the 3 months I had it, they wern't the best quality and the fit in the frame wasn't great, tight clearance which pinched the bearings.
Yes the frames are cheap as they are direct to consumer, so you've not got he lbs margin on there, but I'd honestly expect much more. People are blindsided by the cost, but the ride quality isn't there.
None of the magazines do a proper long term durability review, this is a pre-requisite for any review in my eyes, or at least a follow up. There would be a lot of surprises if they did!
@Hobnob, it’s not replacing the sentinel, just a second bike, I intend to sell my Bird forge.
I like a spare bike, I had an issue with my Sentinel frame, it took 3 months for a new front triangle, 4 month chasing my mates on a hardtail did me in so I’ve decided to treat myself, if I don’t vibe with the 141 I’ll send it back.
I’m not a Bird hater but the Aether does nothing for me.
As for trail Hunt trail wide I’ve had good experiences, I kicked the carp out of my V1 and my second set have had 14 month with no issues, granted at the bottom of something nasty I give them a spin I wouldn’t give my 511’s.
My sentinel this second, great bike.

I thought I’d do I bit of a thread update on the bike, in short, I love it!
I swapped the Hayes for some Formula Cura 4, the stem and chain device for Unite ones and chucked some Gx Axs on, I change the rear tire for a Dissecor but I’m it in Finale so now running stock rubber.
Honestly I can’t speak highly enough on this little bike, I’ve not ridden the Transition in anger since I got it and in reality there is very little between them, at circa 3k it was a steal and even on the naughty stuff I rarely feel under biked.

According to some posts above you're not supposed to be having any fun because your frame is too heavy.
Good work though. And a reminder that I'm not riding mine enough.
Katy Curd has been winning Enduro and DH races on her 141, so they're far from terrible, taking many many scalps of male riders on DH bikes in the process. I'm still sad that i don't get to ride the boys one more as i liked it when i did and would like to get used to it.
If/when his 141 goes back to Privateer i'll be tempted to buy it.
