It seems that half decent (deoreish) 3x9sp chainsets (older, more worn) is higher than 3x10sp and particularly 2x10sp chainsets. New and second hand.

I am presuming this is market forces showing a demand for 3x9sp still...?

Might it also be that triples are easier to convert to 1x?

Or the other way round: that there's little demand for 9spd ones now so they don't bother spending time on trying to price them competitively. Plus that you can mix them so the newer stuff is probably popular for that reason too.

As I understand it, you'll get a better chain line with the middle position on a triple than the outer on a double.

Just frustrating when I have a couple of chainsets that need replacing, in the month we are moving and have no spare cash...

So buy a 3x or 2x10 cheaper
It will work with a 9 speed transmission perfectly well

A lot of the cheap stuff is OE grey import kit. Very few manufacturers are speccing 9 speed so there is a lot less of their over order stock in the market. Hence the prices are higher.

Have you had a look at the full group sets on Merlin? They've got some great deals on them. Comparatively, It didn't end up that much more than a decent chain set, given that you'll probably be needing a cassette and chain anyway. I just bit the bullet and bought a full 3x10 set up

Bung your serviceable 9 speed stuff on the classifieds

Probably more a rarity of 9sp stuff as above not much OEM, 10sp is compatible so why make 9sp?

What actually needs replacing?
Not had a set of cranks die in years, just replace rings.

We are moving house this month, so budgets are more than tight.

I have mrs_oabs cannondale that has older cannondale cranks on oddball Road sized octalink BB - and the threads to install the puller are shot. Mine, I am fed up of GXP BB not lasting, and hope Shimano would last longer.
Eldest_oab is on a cheap, heavy chanset on powerspline BB.
For mrs_oabs it is new crank time, me it would be nice, eldest needs new BB.
All 9sp - and another two bikes are already 9sp as well. It's a slight concern that 9sp is going to become too awkward to get hold of...

9sp is but 10sp chainrings work fine so nothing at all to worry about!
GXP use Hope and the GXP conversion if you want to keep the cranks
Pick the cheapest deore 10sp if you want to swap.

This.

DOI have a 9sp Deore crank working fine with 7sp on the Hybrid of Doom.

That sounds like a way forward - nothing wrong with the cranks, just horrid BB's that seem to run for either a few months, or as the latest one, about 6 weeks 🙁

My Hope BB outlasted the Truvativ cranks! The original GXP BB lasted only months of infrequent riding, whilst that Hope BB has done thousands of miles in all weathers.

dunno if they still offer the service but BETD / goldtec will put new bearings into existing cups for you, you just post them and they put a good quality stainless steel bearing in - they did my raceface BB and it's been absolutely rock solid ever since
