[Closed] Price increase for Shimano MTB stuff

Has anyone noticed how expensive recent prices are for Shimano MTB drivetrain bits are? Cassettes seem to be about £50 for even the base Deore level, and same for the derailleurs which used to be around £30 are now £50-£60. Note I am referring to the newer iterations of Deore - the M6000 series. The only affordable stuff seems to be that from years ago - M610 etc.

If anyone has any suggestions of a good place to buy drivetrain bits from - would be much appreciated. When I was buying a lot, I used to order a groupset from one of the german sites - bike-discount as it was cheaper, but bike-discount seems fairly pricey too now.

On another note, I bought a drivetrain bundle from someone off here: derailleur, shifter cassette, was told it was in fairly good condition but couldn't seem to get it working right. Took it to LBS and they said the derailleur is worn out beyond use, so have to buy a whole new set now. Won't name names but its frustrating as I feel I have little recourse. Comes with the territory of buying used I suppose.

Yes, unfortunately a stick ripped off my Deore clutch mech the other day.

Shouldn't be too painful I thought. At least it's not an xtr.
£65!

I thought there might be a good BF deal going around but no.

As you noted, I went for the older model at around half the price. No clutch but hopefully it's not too bouncy.

Yeah I got a new bike with 12 speed, a quick Google says a 12 speed deore cassete is £80 and 11 speed only £65 so it’s not even worth downgrading.

You think it's expensive now, just you want. I saw a tweet recently that said a 20ft shipping container was about £2.5k to land in the UK but will be closer to £9k next year.

Can't see that being absorbed in anyone's current margins.

I remember about 10 years ago explaining what inflation was and how it worked to a couple of trainee Developers, looks like I'll be doing again soon...

I remember about 10 years ago explaining what inflation was

10 years you say?

The shocking impact of a 3.1% average inflation over the decade 2009-2019 can be estimated here:

https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/inflation-calculator

£10 in 2009
£13.51 in 2019

But actually we’re talking about MTB prices more than doubling in that time. Fortunately, my public sector pay over that decade has easily outstripped inflation. Oh, wait.

Supply and demand. No point offering reductions off RRP when there is limited stock. Also the really cheap stuff on wiggle and the like was OEM to go on bike builds that never happened. There is a shortage so it's not available and you are left with the full retail versions.

Worriednit will only get worse in the next few months. Looking to buy a new mountain bike and there is nothing in stock anywhere.

I just got a good deal on Shimano drivetrain parts from bike discount, latest model Deore 10spd 11-46 cassette and 11spd mech both under £40.

I do sometimes wonder with CRC if they have started pushing their prices up since they have become the Amazon of the cycling world

While there is inflation, the issue at the moment is supply and demand. Unless you have missed something, there is massive demand for bike parts at the moment, so there will not be big discounts or deals available if everything is selling a higher prices. My LBS has quite a few bikes sitting waiting for parts as they cannot get anything, from drivetrain to derailleur hangers.
For the short to medium term, prices will be going up due to demand.

ROFLMAO. I feel your pain!

This is not inflation, this is just simply supply and demand. Not sure what effect Brexit will have on the cost of imported Far Eastern bike parts. Boris the keen cyclist presumably has this quite high up the list in negotiations....

OP have you complained to your mech seller?

One thing go keep in mind is that a 12-speed cassette will require machining an extra three sprockets over a 9-speed (and the larger sprockets require machining more teeth), plus the associated mounting hardware. On top of which, the tolerances are probably a bit narrower. Adding sprockets will always make a cassette more expensive, all other things being equal.

Lots of MTB parts have gone up. A GX Eagle cassette is now £150+, and the best price I've seen is £130. Mine was £100 in July 2019.

I'll be going SLX (£66 from Merlin) and Microspline next.

Fortunately I stocked up on spare XT drivetrain bits (mech, cassette, a couple of chains, chainrings etc) last Black Friday which should keep me going for a good couple of years as the prices nowadays seem quite steep.

I got a 10 speed 11-42 Ztto cassette for £17 delivered off eBay, arrived in 2 days.
Not fitted yet, but looks decent enough (in comparison to my Sunrace which would be about £35-40 to replace)

I've been using it for a month now, absolutely no issues. Time will tell if it will get worn slightly quicker but at £17 its great!

Most of the price 'rises' are actually a reduction, or removal of discounts, the RRPs haven't changed as far as I can see. Shimano stuff is usually heavily discounted.

It's probably a short-term phenomenon similar to what we're having in the IT hardware world, a convergence of circumstances, a reduction in supply as the factory closures in Asia months ago are being felt now as the supply chain catches up, an increase in demand for Laptops and Bike Stuff due to lock-downs here and Christmas when retailers will typically reduce discounts to make the most of the rush.

Have been looking at going 1x11 today. The price of cassettes, mechs and shifters has put that on hold.

Good to hear about the ZTTO cassette.

I've stuck with 1*10 for the MTB, range is broad enough, reliability high/finickiness low, parts are cheap for consumables and good quality second hand shifters/cranks available. I got 3 XT clutch mechs for £35 all in.

11 spd seems the sweet spot on road as the extra ratios help and it's been around long enough to work well and be cheap. My 6800 ultegra groupset has been amazing

Sure there is an increase of prices due to shortage of parts because of factory closures in Asia during coronavirus pandemic, but I feel like prices have gone crazy since ten years ago anyway in the biking world, which is a shame!

Apart from inflation, maybe it is because everyday biking industry becomes bigger and there is also more tech involved in every part. But still, the increase in prices is excessive.
I also rely a lot on Aliexpress, even for original parts.

Shimano is 7 months behind in production.
Many many brands, Merida, Specialized etc have frames sitting there with no parts to build them up.
Got reps calling me up to sell me 2022 stock.
Ridiculous times.
