Just in the process of changing my knackered Shimano Press fit BB and contemplating replacing with a Hope one. Talking £25 for the Shimano or £75 for the Hope, plus a bit more for the tool!?!

Is it really worth the extra money???

I weighed up XT versus Hope bbs and decided Hope wasn't worth it. You still have to pay for the bearing and spend almost as long fitting the things, and XT are just so damn cheap. Big fan of Hope generally though.

depends how often you go through BB's. the Hope screws together to form a single unit rather than two seperate bearings that can move at odd angles to each other. the Hope "should" be miles more durable and less chance of the cups creaking in the frame.

Agree that it all comes down to your experience with press fits - I just replaced a £30 sram gpx one with the same after getting 2 yrs out of it, so no motivation to look at Hope. Others seem to get through them every few months.
The sram one does look like a rinky-dink pos, though, tbh. Plastic shell in two pieces - it seems such a fragile design relative to trad bbs. Worked fine for me though, thus far.

IIRC KCNC make a press fit BB that locks together as well. No experience of it but considered it when replacing the BB on MrsPs Zesty

I have a hope on my Zesty. Smooth as and happy with it. It replaced a FSA one that lasted about 3 months and then went very notchy, which had replaced a Shimano one that did the same. Original BB did 12 months.

The bit i wasn't too keen on was the removal of the old BB. With the Hope one, you remove the bearings from the BB rather than the BB from the frame. Adds a bit more metal to the area rather than wear out whats there if you catch my drift.

Thanks everyone!!! Got 12 months out of previous BB, so Hope one should pay for itself if I run it for more than 3 years!?!

Daver27... I did notice a creak developing in the last few months of its life!! You're a genius cheers 😉 that might just have decided for me!!

Anyone know if the Hope figment tool is a must or is there a workaround??

i have done exactly this on my cube full susser.
the shimano one was still working fine, but its really noticable how much more freely the cranks spin with the hope one fitted.
worth the money imo.

I stuck one of these from onone in my spicy after a failed shimano many many moons ago.Still going really strong and can't recommend enough.Even got another as a spare.it's taken some real abuse and shows no sign of fading.
The only thing i did is pop the seals from new and syringed a load of quality bearing grease in.Spins like a spinny thing.Superb. 😀

Ideally, you're going to need the correct tool to fit it, I wouldn't try to do it without one. Take your frame without a BB to your LBS, and they'll probably fit it free if you buy one there (we do.).

Seen a few carbon frames ruined, caused by the Shimano bearings seizing and rotating in the BB wearing it out, so quite a few folk have replaced them with Hope ones as the bearing if it seizes in theory should rotate in the cup giving the frame a bit more of a chance.
This doesn't seem to be as big a problem with ally frames for some reason.

grey ^^^ thats what i was worried about, although my frame is alu.
hence replacing the shimano one while it was still ok.
i havent seen any personally, but i reckon it could happen if the bearing seized.

what BB standard does your bike have? bb92, PF30, OSBB etc. there are various alternatives to the Hope.

In my friends shop, don't want to say where, but the frames involved were replaced as crash replacements, more than one make involved.
There also doesn't seem to be a problem with press fits on road bikes either.
We are thinking its something to do with water getting into the frames and maybe actng as a lube especially with the Shinano BBs being plastic and more likely to slip on the carbon.
