Anyone else done an inventory on their spares box before the great unwashed* wheel their bikes out of the garage and realise they need pads/tyres/chain etc?

Last years shortages etc are going to happen again this year (or maybe worse) and quickly ordering cheap bits from Germany is less of an option for us on Stupid Island.

I reckon that my part hoarding has finally paid off!  I'm quite well sorted considering I used quite a few of my spares (inc a set of brakes, a set of wheels and a fork) on my sons new bike...

Quick check of the Spares box(es) of joy:

2x Used Rear Mechs (10 speed), New Cassette, New Chain, New Chainring, quick links, set of used cranks...

Tyres 2x Brand new, plus a few used ones, loads of sealant, plenty of tape and a couple of valve stems.

Saddle, used slightly saggy Reverb Dropper, normal post...

Set of Brand New Brakes (Those Tektro Orions Merlin were banging out at £25 an end the other week), at least a couple of sets of new pads for mine and the kids brakes, some used rotors, LOADS of Mineral Oil...

Set of used wheels but the rear is being rebuilt currently.

At least a couple of used pairs of SPDs and set of flat pedals.

Some random grips, set of used bars.

Brand new set of unused summer gloves for me, a set of bigger kids gloves for when their paws grow.

There is the very occasionally ridden Wife's bike too which a kid could use with a saddle/post swap if something happened to their frame or forks or cannibalised if we really have too...

*considering my lack of riding over the winter I can probably count myself myself amongst their number

I wonder if my bike is still in the shed or if it has found a more attentive lover yet??

I've got a spare lockon grip, missing end cap, a few brake pads and a pile of filthy old tyres, mainly xc summer variety.

Should do.

Yeah, lots, but usually not the thing I need. But anyway good reminder, going to have a clear-out starting with a swift frameset, inbred frame and carbon fork and some wheelsets to suit. #steelisrealspring- yeah?

Well I've got a winter road, summer road, cx, mountain bike, SS mountain bike, commuter so if anything brakes I will just ride a different bike for a few weeks until I can sort it. Might mean I miss a planned ride/race but not the end of the world.

Basic maintenance stuff I've got. I stopped keeping too much in spares unless I'm planning to use it in the near future. Last time I did a clear-out I had loads of stuff I'd just never used like 9 speed chains and other bits that no longer fitted any of my bikes.

I've got the new cables and bar tape for the road bike that I bought ahead of lockdown v1 last year that I still haven't fitted. Does that count? 🙂

Still got:

- most of a roll of cable outers and a massive bag of cable inners I bought 7 years ago

-a spare shed of tyres and wheels, mostly from when specialised were selling their tyres for around £20

-after letting 2 mtbs and the road bike wear the chains to the point the cassettes and chain rings needed replacing I have a stack of chains ready to swap.

I've got everything I need, except I'm buying a cross/ gravel frame and some bits from a mate so I've no tyres/ bars/....

Speaking as someone who's trying to build bike, the shortages have never really gone away and prices are going up.

I found most things are still available but the whole delicatessen of multiple shops being able to sell you the same thing and compare prices to buy the cheapest isn't really a thing anymore.

Currently hoarding an 11sp XT groupset, a 10sp 105 groupset and various other bits and pieces *just in case*. I'll put it up for sale when the massive boat of Shimano groupsets finally lands - I can only assume that it's all spent the last few months at sea.

Jonba+1

If the very worst happened my 6ft tall nearly 18 year old has outgrown his Inbred and I'll nick that.

11 speed 105 drivetrain

makings of a new set of disc wheels, set of discs, set of callipers, set of cables, in fact, everything to go disc on my CX bike except forks (in the mail).

The above will free up a set of rim brake wheels to act as spares for either road bike

big pile of saddles, currently augmented by the two saddles Probikekit have sent me, neither of which was the one I ordered!

Big Box o' tyres

Spare 2x gravel drivetrain minus front mech, need to get that ordered

Almost entire bike's worth of gear and brake cables

I'm screwed when we move out in two weeks time and my wife finds all this...

Got the essentials, big stack of tyres of varying uses, few spare wheels, cassettes, brake pads, dropper etc.

I had big clear out in the autumn of all the high value kit, as we moved last year I do unearth the odd box of stuff to sell which I have been doing - people are spending a lot of money still on stuff I wouldn't expect them to.

Ultimately we have a couple of bikes each, so if I don't have something I need, i'll just ride the other bike until I can get it.

I have over the years built up a good selection of spares for the bikes I have. All bikes run on old hopes for example bought secondhand. I have spare levers, calipers, hoses, pads, seals.
I have a selection of gear cables including extra long ones for the tandem. I have the usual pile of tyres, mechs etc. I even have some spare wheels. as well as bars and stems

I have a few bits. Nothing worse than needing to do quick repair and not having spares and having to wait to get the parts. Got a few bikes, so can usually keep riding.

Rim brake pads, both road and mountain (probably won't need to buy anymore for the next 5 years)
Disc brake pads.
Gear and brake cables (inners and outers)
Inner tubes
Chains. 1 11spd about 5 9spd. Need to order a 12spd for new bike thats on order.
Replacement mech hangers, not for every bike, so need to get some more ordered.
Possibly some 9spd jockey wheels

Don't think I keep any other new spare parts, but I have a box of old parts that still have a few miles left in them in that could be used to temporarily fix a bike
