Thinking about getting a power meter to make the most of my new Garmin 1030 .

For the MTB to start with so what meter to go with a XT M8000 chain set ?

Powertap rear wheel would be the simplest choice. No mtb pedal systems yet, but you could ride road pedals if you’re brave! Given it’s a standard Shimano XT, a single sided 4i crank would also work fine. Is not personally choose a Stages due to reliability issues which will only be exacerbated in a harsh mtb setting.

Powetap chainset may also work depending on bcd.

Clevertraining is a good place to shop. 10% off with dcrainmakers code too.

Road pedals is out of the question and 4iii don't seem to do XT8000 .

Rear hub also won't work so I guess a 3rd gen Stages is the only remaining option .

Rotor 2 in power.

I've got in an inpower (1 crank) and it's been flawless.

2 in power is both cranks measured rather than doubled.

It will mean ditching your crank.

He did a review of prototypes about 6 months ago, which is where I first heard of them. Not seen a review of the production models yet.

Njee + 1.

I can see on 4iiii's website a precision non-drive side for XT8000 (and sweamrs has the exact same one so I know it exists).

Ah. Can't help there I'm afraid as I live in Calgary and 4iiii are based 30 minutes away so I just picked it up from the factory (literally).

What's with all the hate toward Stages power meters? Yes, sometimes the batteries go flat over the course of a few weeks...or days...or overnight. Yes, sometimes they stop working if you ride your bike in mild precipitation...or if its cold...or dark. And yes sometimes the battery cover tabs snap off when you change the batteries. But I tell you what, they dry out a treat on radiators and a CR2032 battery is cheaper than any other power meter you care to name. I've got three and I'm not a mug!!!

...oh hang on mo...

Stages XTR in the USA close out sale and shipped across $199!!! For what retails @ £650 in the UK

They regularly go for $99 if you don't mind blemished ones. Very little benefit in going for a V3, (some $99 ones left still)

Battery lasts 3 months, flawless power data with a Wahoo Bolt and Garmin 810, fitted in 5 minutes, lightweight, not had a single issue. Quite the contrary to brothers Garmin which has been RMA'd twice!

In fact some brand spank $199 XTR left in trail and race varients, albeit 170/180mm

https://store.stagescycling.com/Stages-Power-Meter-XTR-M9000-or-M9020

175mm would pair well with most silver shimano cranksets

I always ran a grey ultegra stages crank with a shiny 6600 ultegra chainset and drive side crank. Nobody ever mentioned it. It seldom lasted long enough to be noted in races though.
