[Closed] Powdercoating a frame with a 'metallic' colour or with sparkles?

Unless you go to a specialist you may struggle. I deal with a few powdercoaters and they mainly use specific ral colours. They can get most colours but won't unless the quantities justify it. Another consideration is that some won't do certain finishes and colours as they might not have the equipment. I wanted something sprayed fluorescent and no one would do it because of the mess it made of the gun. The companies I have had bike frames done at ideally like you to pick a stock colour and will do it as a foreigner with the next batch of that colour.
An option may be to get it powdercoated as a base colour then get a finish sprayed on top.

Yes you can get them done, LSN Coatings did some for our girls. First class jobs and cheap.

Had my old Intense done in sulphur yellow with a gold flake added. They didn't say there woulod be any issues doing it. Came out really well (could have added a bit more flake but was happy with the results) and had a nice glisten in the sun:

Pearlescent! that's the word I was after. Great finish on those Tracey & Wakefield's not a million miles away. Ta.

I got purple done with just a little sparkle coat over the top (Scotland though) so it can be done

Can anyone explain the process to a simpleton like me?

I'd like my Cove re-done, but it'already been repainted once, very badly and it's flaking off on the edges - I'd like them to strip it, fill a small dent and recoat it - Argos Racing will do it, but they want 3 weeks and that's too long to be without my only bike.

LSN stripped the frame, masked it all up and then powder coated it all within a couple of days. Most we paid was £65 for the Reign which included the white bits. Was a few years ago.

Powdercoating melts a plastic powder to form a very tough coat.

Paint (or enamel) is solvent based (might be a hydrocarbon solvent, or might be water). Some are a reaction and made up of two parts (2k) which when mixed set. Paint is almost always the better quality finish (you wouldn't powder coat a car for example), but it is more fragile and chips.

Metalic finishes are made by adding various amounts of metal dust to the clearcoat on top, not the color otherwise you'd not see it. So strictly these aren't powdercoated, but can be applied on top of powdercoat as long as the temperature they're cured at is less than the powdercoat melts at.

Candy finishes are a dilute paint in clear lacquer over a silver or gold colored base coat (although you can do it with a colored base coat and top layer).

Pearl finishes are like a cross between the two, except using mica (ground up white rocks) not metal, in an otherwise transparent colored layer so you get a slightly milky color.

Hence why some powder coaters don't offer them, because they're not setup for doing clearcoats on top of their powder.

So, providing it's something they do, filling a smoothing a small dent doesn't stop them power coating would you say?

Stockport powder coating might be worth chancing, they do chrome finishes for car wheels and the like so might be able to sort some other finishes out. Also they do a fantastic job and give great service, highly recommend them!

Regarding filling I was told I couldn't fill a dent because the filler would just fall out during the powdercoating process (presumably the heat). I'm not sure if special fillers are available but it will be best to ask the company doing the job.

I would also ask them about masking off inside the bottom bracket, headset and any other threads. You cant use normal masking tape when powdercoating as it can burn and damage the nearby paint. You can use high temperature masking tape though so I would buy some and mask it myself before getting it coated.

The powdercoaters who did my frame had a massive bag of silicon bungs that fitted every orifice..

You can have dent's filled with brass by a framebuilder as it's steel. That'll easily withstand powdercoating.

Aerocoat.net these guys come highly recommend by me never had an issue and they do colourful chrome fads as well as sparkles and metal flake. I had a frame done in such an offensively bright green with gold flake and silver sparkles that I loved but everyone else hated
