I'm sick of trying to find a local powder coater, most companies here (in cumbria) just forward the item onto preston or further a field so I thought since I'm paying for postage why not send it somewhere that's done bike frames before.

Its for my Intense Socom, I've got it stripped down, bearings removed and it came in RAW anyway so it doesnt have any paint to strip.

Can someone recommend me where to send it from experience please.

Try Dan at:

www.pwsfinishing.co.uk

Great service from these guys.

Believe they're used by Mike @ Dialled. He's also done tons of retro bmx paint jobs. There's a bmx gallery somewhere of the work they've done. Entirely reasonable costs too. He's done my Stiffee & Hustler and v.happy with both.

Yep, Triple-S. Top job on my Blur 4X. Few months previous I'd had a local place do my Soul and in comparison, the work on the Soul was very industrial (ie, rubbish). Orange peel effect caused by low quality powder (apparently).

Can I ask, once powder coated do people then just stick decals on top and leave exposed or can the decals then be lacquered over?

Does any powder coater do this?

£58 + £16 to do my inbred according to that, hopefully applying the decals is free 😛

Triple S, never used them for pushbike stuff but they did great work on my motorbike.

That said... Do armourtex do work by post? I think I'll be getting my replacement Mmmbop done up before I build it.

Argos. They did my sovereign in british racing green, made new decals fitted them and lacquered over them, and it was by far better than the original paintwork; not cheap though - about £130 including decals delivery etc.

I've used Armourtex "by post"

Turner Flux front triangle only

£64 for powder coating - £16 for lacquer - £20 return carriage (insured)

Expensive but a good job

I was looking at having my Hustler done last year, even mailed Cove to ask about the impact of the heat on the frame. They replied to say no problem so long as you use an experienced powder coater which seemd reasonable - but then went on to say it would void the lifetime warranty on the frame.

This put me off as there were horror stories on here about frame breaking only months after being powder coated.

Nim - would be interested to hear how your Hustler has been since being done. Did you have any problems re-assembling it such as fitting the bearings back into the rear suspension arms etc?

I had a Hustler powdercoated..

It cracked a week later..

😐

Hopefully, just a coincidence..

And yes, it did invalidate the warranty.,but I was told it was only 2 years...

A week later - ouch! Where did it crack? Do you think it was due to the powder coat heat?

Bullet - Haven't built my Hustler back up as yet. LBS did the bearings for me - remove & install. Charged me a tenner but they're very good like that - another shop wanted to charge considerably more. Not great news about that frame cracking per the above. Only one way to find out if mine will crack or be ok....

Orange peel effect is generally down to poor coating technique - spray drying as opposed to poor quality components.

Hydro grpahics in York do some excellent stuff - guy on here had a Spec FSR turned into a tree...

I was told by the guy at Triple S that the laquer coating on a particular style of powder coat (candied) needed another turn in the oven. So they couldn't do the decals for me.

portlyone

If you don't mind me asking - how much was the candied (I had an Inbred done about 8 years ago at SSS) as when I last asked the prices were nowhere near the ones on the website ?

Cheers

Thanks. That's not much more than I paid.

Website is still showing £56 for a frame, which is what annoyed me a bit last time as I drove down there (over 2 hours each way) and was told it was £86 for a metallic, frame only !

Very nice finish but Ive since used Bettablast who were just as good and much cheaper with only a little less colour choice.

Woody

I was quoted around 120-140 for candied on a FS (i.e. two parts). Their gloss black looks amazing so am tempted to go for that too. that's save me about £60 I reckon.

Fancy a crack at this, the Commencal's dodgy paint job is in dire need of sprucing up.

Obviously you need to strip everything off for these guys, but do they deal with masking BBs, pivot areas, etc? Also if you go for the laquer option is it a case of handing in a sticker set with the frame?

Thanks

A decent coater will mask the bits off... a crap one won't def best to use a firm with a good rep and that knows bikes.

LSN stripped all the old paint off and masked every thing up

Let me know how it turns out Trailofdestruction.

I just had a frame done at Garrick Surface Coatings in Walton Summit, near Preston. I think they've done a good job, but I have no comparison.

They do quite a few bike frames and go through what to mask with you etc, but whilst its a gloss finish, its not as glossy as a factory paint job. I presume lacquering or a candy colour would give the glossier finish?

Triple S do the masking for you.

Redditch shotblasting did a fantastic job on my Ducati bits, I had gloss black on the frame and suspension which came up better than a lot of wet spray jobs I've seen, they do pearls and metalics too and they were about a third of the price of triple S...
Well recomended and 1st place I would go back to

Holy thread resurection Batman !!

Going to pick up frame on Saturday, hopefully. It's taken them a while to get around to it, but I havn't really been in a rush (otherwise I would have paid more and gone elsewhere)

I will post pics as soon as I have it back. Fingers crossed.

mine is parcelled up ready to be sent to armourtex, going powder coat and then laquer,

I was just going to add decals when i got it back? Will they just peel off too easy?

Do you think im best asking them to add the decals before the lacquer? or will they stick them on pissed lol

Mine cost £136 in the end (Triple S). Including a chemical bath for the previous coat...
