I'm looking to get an aluminium hardtail frame resprayed. Nothing fancy, just a single colour RAL powder coat. Ideally all threads faced etc by paint shop. Any recommendations?

I know of Armortex - anyone else?

Triple S in Bingley are very good and offer courier service.

Just had one done in Derby. Make sure they mask up all threads and internal surfaces. BTW very happy with RAL7015 🙂

I can highly recommend washford finishings in redditch or Blackpole powder coatings in worcester. Both have done great jobs previously for me and family members on various car parts and a couple of bikes

How is the powder coat finished, I.e how is it made resistant to stone chips? Asking for a friend 🙂

It's made by melting powdered polyester to form a solid coat, you can clear coat over the top but it's much tougher than standard paint.

Ta! Is that something you’d expect the powder coater to do as standard or would it have to be requested as an extra?

I got a frame painted years ago by a bike builder/painter which looked great only every time it looked at a chipped path the paint would throw itself off. Quite disappointing 🙁

Thats litteraly what powdercoat is.

You spray the powdered plastic onto whatever it is, then put it in a big oven to melt it.

Yeah, as above, powder coat is thick and seems quite robust but the ones I've seen don't quite seem to have the same full glossy sheen as factory paint.

Garrick Surface Coatings in Bamber Bridge did a full suss Marin for me about 10 years ago, they did a lot of bike frames back then and the guys knew what needed masking up etc. Not sure if they still do, but worth a call if you are local.

+1 for Washford finishings in redditch (aka redditch shotblasting). They recently did my 29er HT for a very reasonable £60.

The coating won't need a clear coat on top ( unless you go certain types of finish, your coater will know whivh needs a top coat). You are just building up a thicker coat which can be more prone to chipping. Better to invisi tape the areas prone to stone and rock damage.

Thanks all! I'm based near London not far from Berkhamsted/Dunstable area.

I would use Armortex, but they are quite expensive now - they did a great job of my wife's frame, fork and stem.

I will look into all the above - I just want a solid RAL with a good quality matte clear coat.

Cheers!

Powder coating Ral colours are available in matt finishes, this negates the need for a clear matt top coat. Most of the colours we do are matt finish. We don't do bikes etc unless its mates as we are set up for bigger industrial items. There are plenty out there specialising in frames, wheels etc.

I've had various frames powdercoated. Some good, some bad. Triple-S as mentioned above were very good but I still needed to chase out BB threads etc.

I've had some done by places more suited to industrial scale stuff - fire escapes and playground equipment. Some good, some pretty shoddy but priced to reflect it.

If you were Yorkshire based theres a few I'd reccommend but you're not!

Try and find a place who specialises in bikes/motorbikes/cars and refurbishes parts for those. Might pay a bit extra but probably guarantee a decent result and will know about carefully masking stuff off.

I paid £65 in Bristol for a kids balance bike frame and forks to be powdercoated around October time. I left it with them about 3 or 4 weeks as they were fitting it in amongst their bigger industrial jobs.

The finish is decent (it’s Pink) and considering how much it’s been thrown down / crashed etc the paint is holding up well. Some scratches - but if my mtb has been through similar it’s paint would be looking in a much worse state.

Worth finding a powder coater who regularly does bikes and knows about temperatures to run in the oven as your alloy frame is most likely heat treated and you don’t want to weaken it.
