It seems self evident, but thought I better check just in case:
If I've got Stan's No Tubes ZTR Crest rims and suitable tyres, do I just stick some tubeless goo in and pump them up? Or do I need rim tape and countless other things?
Currently got tubes in but when changing a puncture I noticed the "no tubes" bit and got thinking.

You need to use an adhesive tape to seal the spoke holes - stans sell one
You need a valve for each wheel.
Tape, put valve in, fit tyre inflate to check, then add sealand then reinflate
As above, tape of choice (whole forums written on the subject but the minimum aim is to be a gas-tight seal over the spoke holes - there are other considerations). Â The Stans tape is pricy but does the job. Â WTB's is functionally identical but in greater range of widths and cheaper. Â As the rim bed dishes a bit you want slightly wider than the inner diameter ideally. Â For such a mundane sounding item, tape is a surprisingly varied thing.
Particular points to watch are making the hole for the valve too big and wrinkles in the tape leading to leaks.

though others are available, and even gorilla or electrical tape will do in a pinch.

If using general cheap electrical tape be careful not to pull it too hard - it will stretch and doesn't work as well for this purpose then.
Sadly, yes a little more buying. Â Referring back to your original point - the only time you don't need tape for a tubeless setup is when there are no spokeholes in the rim bed. Â It's the bead shape that made Stans rims special BITD although most companies now have copied or developed the innovation.
To answer the rest of the question, for a foolproof(!) method leave the wheels and tape indoors to bet to temp for 24hrs. Â This ensures the adhesives will stick easier.
Then tape up. Â Put a tube in, inflate to 40psi and leave overnight, Â This seats the bead on the rim, and puts force on the tape to stick to the rim.
Finally, deflate and carefully remove one side of the tyre only, pull the tube out, put the tubeless valve in, and reseat that single side of the tyre. Â Add sealant on the way or injected via the valves, pump and - voila!
Then tape up. Â Put a tube in, inflate to 40psi and leave overnight, Â This seats the bead on the rim, and puts force on the tape to stick to the rim.
Tip for taping - make sure you break a sweat getting it tight.
On stans not much need for the tube unless you have crap tyres
I leave the tape on the radiator for a bit and heat up the rim with a hairdryer before I pull the tape on. Once you get the first bit properly stuck and rubbed down with your thumbs then it gets easier.
