To keep my motivation to go out in the cold.

1. Trails are quiter
2. The stinging nettles have died
3. Colder so get to wear my nice merino stuff

Others ?

1. Best sunsets of any time of year, by a mile!
2. You start in the light, end in the dark, which ensures the resulting visual confusion has you off at least once
3. The pub is even more welcome at the end as the temperature drops

The colours! Clear starry nights, they're a real novelty after light skies all summer. Our trails do actually dry out for most of the summer so come Oct you have to learn how to ride again when the roots become permawet and slidey.

It's easier to sneak up on doggers.

Especially scaring them with your massive lumens at the last minute!

2. The stinging nettles have died - the stags are kicking off
3. Colder so get to wear my nice merino stuff - lose that summer tan

It's the feeling of a stolen moment, a cheeky ride, a time that shows just how much you love to ride the trails.

Nothing stops us - not darkness, not leaves, not mud, and not doggers.

I'm welling up here......

Mr Potatohead - I was thinking more of the cars that bounce up and down in an unexplainable manner.

You often find them 20m or so from the road down a wide bridleway, windows all steamy.....

I often find dimming the lights until the last minute and then putting them on full beam is the best way of seeing a full moon.

has anyone ever come across any doggers? I go down plenty of dark urban sidetracks and qiuet lanes and have never seen any in 3 years of MTBing.

Ive never seen doggers as such but the odd couple making jiggy in a car from time to time .once got to the top of a climb , stuck me head up and there was a couple having oral happiness on a bench

and when you say COMMING ACCROSS DOGGERS ......

has anyone ever come across any doggers? ........

Coming down off Gower into Clyne woods there was a steamed up car blocking the track, a few years ago. Full daylight and on a reasonably busy bit of trail. I edged past it trying not to disrupt the occupants' rhythm and carried on, turning off that trail into a car park. Where there was a police dog handler about to take the dog for a walk......

Giggling like a child I begged him to walk up the track and knock on the car's window, just to see the response, but the spoilsport wouldn't. He thought it best to leave them be. I ask you, what do we pay the police for.

Back to the op, I think this is one of the best times to ride. Summer is very overrated because everything gets overgrown, too warm and damp, etc. The conditions can be perfect at this time of year in every respect.

1. The trails that are becoming a bit boring get a new lease of life in the dark.

2. The childish boy in me loves the night ride excitement.

3. You ride much faster otherwise the werewolf stalking you catches you up!!!!!

The monsters haven't woken from the summer hibernation so it's safe out for a month or so.

Less importantly the trails are nice and dry at the moment and there was hardly anyone about last night.

I think that I am in mourning for the light evenings as I am not feeling any love for dark night rides at the moment 🙁

Maybe I should re-read this thread later today and push myself to go out and get back into the swing of it otherwise it is going to be a long and boring autumn/winter, sigh.
