Cycling along and hit by a van travelling on the wrong side of the road.

And they still word the story like the kids were the ones who hit the vehicle for ****s sake. It's not balance, it's not preventing a fair trial, it's just lazy journalism and it boils my piss.

Some poor kid's not going home, ever, and if you read the headline and first three paragraphs you'd not even know there was a driver of the van.

‘The teenager was riding with two other boys on Bullerthorpe Lane when they crashed into a van, which was believed to have been overtaking a car’

Sorry, who crashed into who again?

Thats literally 2 minutes from my house, I live in Woodlesford.

Shit road to ride down as its fairly narrow and people drive like cocks down there. I'm currently trying to get some traffic calming measure between the bottom of Bullerthorpe Lane and Woodlesford but the highways guy didn't turn up to our meeting 2 weeks ago!!

He might take stuff a bit more seriously now!!

Really hoping it isn't someone I know.....

🙁

If Tom's quote was verbatim they've changed it, but it's no better:

He was with two 15-year-old boys riding their bikes on Bullerthorpe Lane when all three crashed with the van shortly after 19:00 BST on Monday, police said.

"Crashed with". I think they mean "Were driven into". Mental.

At least the Evening Post got it right

https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/crime/bullerthorpe-lane-crash-14-year-old-boy-killed-by-van-on-same-leeds-road-where-teen-girl-died-in-crash-1-9410173

not that it is much consolation to the families involved

I've had my fill of seeing senseless driving and near-misses recently and it's gutting to see a young kid has lost their life because of it.

I've chucked my complaint in too, piss poor journalism like that does not help anyone

If Tom’s quote was verbatim they’ve changed it

The photo caption still blames the kids. Inside the article its slightly more tempered but still piss poor. Especially since when it comes to the car it hit its "crashed into the car at the same time as the collision with the cyclists.".

Complaint submitted.

At least the Evening Post got it right

Not sure it did, the article seems to focus more on the death of the girl in May than this incident. Both tragic clearly.

Article has been revised and is marginally more neutral:

Before:

Boy, 14, dies after trio involved in bike crash with van in Leeds

He was with two 15-year-old boys riding their bikes on Bullerthorpe Lane when all three crashed with the van shortly after 19:00 BST on Monday, police said.

They were taken to hospital where the 14-year-old later died. One of the boys suffered serious injuries and remains in a stable condition, while the other was treated for minor injuries.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Officers said they believed the white Mercedes Sprinter dropside van was overtaking a white Volkswagen Polo, and had crashed into the car at the same time as the collision with the cyclists.

The van was driving in the opposite direction to the boys, who were riding towards Woodlesford.

The driver of the van, a 28-year-old man from Castleford, is in custody, police said.

West Yorkshire Police appealed for any witnesses to come forward and said it was keen to speak to anyone who has dashcam footage of the incident.

Revised:

Boy, 14, dies after trio involved in bike crash with van in Leeds

A 14-year-old cyclist has died in a crash with a van in Leeds.

He was with two 15-year-old boys riding their bikes on Bullerthorpe Lane when the crash happened shortly after 19:00 BST on Monday, police said.

They were taken to hospital where the 14-year-old later died. One of the boys suffered serious injuries and remains in a stable condition, while the other was treated for minor injuries.

I detest the use of the phrase "died in a crash with a van", which seems so wrong 🙁 I ride past here on one of my routes back home and it's horrid to think that I may have seen these kids at some point when cycling home. Horrible.

We campaigned for 30 years for traffic calming and, ironically, failed until now because we had had no accidents in the street. So I'm sorry to say that you are right; the death will move you up the leangue table of deserving streets, so the lad's death might not be completely in vain.

It’s improved a bit still but still seems to come from the idea that the kids caused the accident.

How do you complain?

horrendous, so sad.

i use the first 100m of that road on my commute, but i ride on the path.

people use the road as a commuting race track. no lighting and where the accident happened it is the narrowest part. mirrors on the road at all times.

horrible.

Complained earlier too, headline’s now changed to

”Cyclist, 14, dies after Leeds van crash” - maginally better I suppose.

Tragic for the family.
