I have converted my Orange Gyro to 1x10. Im using all new parts and cables. Its xt cassette with a 16t, a 40t t-rex and a hope retainer ring. The slx clutch mech has a rad cage and the shifter is new too.
I have done this setup on 4 other bikes. Shifting to lower gears is crisp and lovely, however into higher gears (smaller sprocket) in the middle of the cassette is poor.
It struggles with going into the next highest gear, and a second press of the lever then makes it move two gears.

I cant seem to find why it wont happily go into a higher gear. Any suggestions?

Assuming you have set the cable tension correctly, bent mech/hanger?

Whenever I've had this problem it's almost always been a sticking/binding gear cable. It'll work fine shifting down as you're pulling the cable with your thumb on the paddle so plenty of force, but shifting up you're clicking down a ratchet in the shifter and the mech spring tries to take up the slack, but if you've got a squashed bit of gear outer, a tight bend or loop or a kink anywhere the mech spring won't be strong enough to overcome the friction like you can with your thumb so it won't drop down smoothly.

I encounter this occasionally, in fact had very similar rebuilding my fiancés the other day.
to start assembly I pulled the cable outer off, cleaned the wire, squeezed a bit of low weight oil in then put it back on. Next set the tension as per normal. It did the jumpy thing when I tested it so carefully played with the fine adjustment nob on the shifter (deore - but I think lots have the same adjustment), took a bit of fiddling but eventually it shifts cleanly.
I should say I set the front ring to the middle and made the adjustments.
As above, important to check the cable is free running, the spring in the derailleur is not gummed up/compromised and all parts work - as best as you can tell - independently.
If it's not going into higher gears it may mean the tension isn't quite as high as it should be from the outset, no matter how hard you push the lever it won't increase - hence reached the limit of it's tension as you've set it.

Did you install new outers?

Check for kinks / tight bends - especially on cable entry into rear mech. You need nice smooth loop of cable.

Stretch the cable - if open system, grab the cable in your fist, hold mech and pull. This beds in the cable and all plastic ferrules.

Does it work if you turn clutch off? Obviously this adds friction into the system.

If none of this works.... And it's all new. Then I would get the hanger alignment checked. You won't see it by eye on a 10 speed system.... Needs to be aligned to within around 0.5mm. I have had issues with hangers fractions out.

New hangers are cheap.

Lbs will have a alignment tool.

Good luck

On further examination and fiddling, it was a little too much cable tension! Its now sorted. Thanks for all your help!
