Will it remove the black colour from them before I get evicted for foul language? I've tried motorbike polishing paste, which gives a lovely shine, but the colour proves very hard to remove. Strangely it was easyu to rub it off with my trainers' heel.

You'll have to remove any colour with some wet and dry and then polish out the scratches with some very fine wet and dry, then polish with autosol for the rest of your life.

Is there a problem with using caustic soda?

caustic soda works on anodized finishes and that dull black shot peened finish. didn't work on shiney black cranks for me. probably nitromors would have.

Nitromors made not a mark, time for caustic soda then!
