I'm just a pootler and regularly cycle some of the lovely accessible nature reserves on the Somerset Levels. We live at the foot of the Polden Hills and I've been looking for some routes I could cycle off road (I've been through many times on road routes) without upsetting folk (I've been through on foot many times).

Somerset Wildlife Trust's Great Breach Wood specifically prohibits cycling. We've walked Coombe Hill Woods and some of the routes on their brochure are marked as bridleways but we don't really want to get into conflict with walkers; sadly the Polden Way is by foot only.

I was wondering whether anyone else knew the area and whether there are any trails we/I could legally cycle. As non-drivers we don't stray too far from home.

Hi there , I live in Street .There are a few "cheeky" trails that are best ridden under the radar if you get my drift 😉There's the disused railway path that takes you from Cossington to Bawdrip then you can follow the King Sedgemoor Drain back towards Stawell if you haven't already done that ?
From Westhay Nature Reserve there are a couple of droves you can ride up and down that give a nice feeling of solitude , one that comes out not far from Wilkins Cider Farm 🤓Also from the Willows Visitor Centre (cafe) you can cycle all the way into Glastonbury on the old railway line . Half way up there's the Railway Inn with a nice little beer garden . Oh and if you are out at Westhay there's also Sweets Tea Room 😀
Are you detecting a theme here ? 😃😃😃😃
As you have probably found the roads on the levels are preferable to the main roads . If you want any more info give me a shout .

Thanks Oldfart (I think we used to cross paths over at RGL Cycles in Glastonbury when Russell was there); I've done some of the rides you mention but I'll have a peek at the others.

I fancy getting out in the woods for Spring and there are some lovely ones we've walked up on the Poldens, but the reserves don't seem very cycle friendly.

I'm having a look at Loxley Woods (Woodland Trust) but their Management Plan doesn't mention cycling; I'll drop them an email.

You'll never be able to ride in Loxley Woods, far too dense.
