Right so I’ve had 4 snapped mech hangers in the past 2 weeks, I need some help diagnosing the problem as it’s becoming expensive with mech hangers at £15 a shot!
It’s on my hardtail, running a deore mech, standard 9 speed long cage with a KMC chain. The hanger has always snapped when I was in the granny ring and about 3or4 rings down from the biggest ring at the back. It usually happens from a stopped start on an incline, so under load. The point of the snap is crucial as this is the point where it happens. But what? The chain is the right length I’m certain. The mech is only 6 months old. I clean all the drive chain after every ride, and the jockey wheels and the mech get special attention. I use a chain cleaner after every ride, dry and lube up again. The chain is about 4 months old as well but a worn chain wouldn’t cause that.
Any questions or suggestions, shoot.
& Thanks. :o)
Any pics of your setup?
Sounds like the chain is catching on something on the chainset or chainring - maybe massive chainsuck, a bent tooth on the granny ring, or something else snagging the chain so it doesn't release from the chainring at the bottom.
Or it's jamming in the mech's cage somehow - you sure there's no bent or stiff links in the chain
Mrbel I think you have it, everytime it's happened I've had to pull the chain out of the bottom of the cage. If the chain was crossing slightly when I turn the cranks I think it's been pulling the chain into the gap between the jockey and the cage. So new better mech or just be careful.
thanks.
what bike?
Is it possible one of the jockeys is the wrong way round. The lower jockey is asymmetrical and can cause problems if mounted wrongly.
A riding buddy snapped a swingarm from a wonky lower jockey wheel causing the chain to jam as it exits the mech cage. Hard to judge until close examination
