Acceptable or not? An engineer can do this for me. Now obviously it will stop the carbon collapsing, but I'm not sure of the effect of clamping will have on the weave.
I'm only asking as the wider flats don't seem to be reinforced.

As an alternative, consider the Cane Creek Ergo bar-ends fitted to a set of lock on grips. The "inner" lock-on ring will be where all the controls are fitted (and hence should be strong enough), the Ergos fit on where the outer ring would be.

Absolutely fine, Truvative supply custom metal bar plugs with their Noir carbon flat bars bars for the same reason.

I just trimmed/whittled a screwdriver handle down, then stuck it in with araldite. Stops the carbon crushing and works a treat.

The Easton monkeylites have a thin alu tube in the end .. I run them with bar ends and Hope end caps. No probs at all.
