I’ve Mainly used m520/m540 spd, but I’m looking for some with stability /a platform, circa 450g
Shimano spd so I can alternate between xc style shoe and more flat trainer spd trainer

It’ll be for xc use Pennines,
Looked at a few brands dmr nukeproof
But friends say made of cheese etc

Am I best sticking with an XT platform
Like the m8120, I presume they are bullet proof

What other recommendations please, got to be Shimano spd so I can mix match shoes to current bikes, rather than crankbros

And fit and forget

Was gonna say M530, but they seem to be mega money or out of stock, so yeah, XT.

I've been running the Nukeproof clipless pedals on one bike for a few years now. Bigger platform than the Shimano ones, and had no problems so far.

Horizon CS I think.

I've got Nukeproof, XT and XTR and have had the plastic caged old shimano ones.

My current XTs have been fit and forget as you'd expect but they've only done 3000km. Previous XT axle shimanos I've had have lasted a long time.

My Nukeproof ones wore through the binding parts in not all that long (wild guess, similar mileage to above). However, there's a rebuild kit so they're ready to go again as spares. You might take the view that's not the end of the world and perhaps it's just their approach but for me they lasted poorly compared to my shimano experiences. Big platform with pins, engagement varies a lot between shoes and they feel different especially on clipping in.

My XTRs have the rubber seal issue (seals work their way out a couple of mm along the axle) and always have. They're only 1500km old. So far I've essentially ignored that and otherwise they've been as per XT. I don't see a reason to buy over XT. I got mine because they cost about the same from some ebay seller at the time (and covid supply nonsense) and they're thinner than XT (but that's pretty marginal).

The old Plastic caged Shimano ones I had for years but for much of the time I was repeatedly tightening the nut, plus the plastic cage was pretty wrecked. I think we've come on since them.

The caged Shimano trail pedals don't actually provide any additional platform for your foot over the non caged version. I think Shimano only really do the Saint that has a functional platform otherwise you need to look at other brands. For longevity Shimano definitely wins.

EH500? One side is platform with pins, the other SPD.

I like my Nukeproof Horizons but whilst they’re Shimano compatible ish - I find the Nukeproof pedals work much better with the Nukeproof cleats than Shimano ones. So if you want compatibility between brands I’d give the Nukeproofs a swerve.

thanks for the great info guys, not quite moon on a stick.. :0)

had liked the nukeproof as well, @joeB have you tried the nukeproof cleat on regular shimano spd pedals? does it work. presumably not as well as shimano ones.

in terms of platform, i just find when small jumping and landing on my m520s i'd like my weight distributed more as i definately feel the land on the small pedal area of my underfoot. maybe its the shoes i wear. old model M089 shoe that causes it, and a more chunky trainer style shoe would solve that

The Saints are great but I’ve had real issues with taking any play out of the bearings

>2000km on my look enrage without any issues. Cartridge bearings and seem solid.

@whatyadoinsucka

I guess I’ve tried them with shimano pedals a couple of times, but only on uplift days where we’ve done a couple of quick bike swaps for a few runs. Didn’t notice any issue getting clipped in or out of Shimano.

Shimano cleats on Nukeproof were hard to click in but fine once in and getting out.
