Hiya everyone,
Tonight I've replaced my RD-M510 top-normal derailleur with a new RD-M960 low-normal running from ST-M739s at the front...but I'm having the mother of a time getting it to shift properly!
Needs two clicks to get either on or off the largest cog. Didn't have this problem before!
According to Shimano it's all Mega-9 so should work equally well on 8 or 9-speed together, and I followed the setup instructions on
I've re-fixed the cable to take up slack and it seems to run back & forward smoothly along the whole run when I pushed and pulled it by hand off from the RD.
It's a fairly new coated steel cable. I would strip it out, grease it and refit but I can't think of anything in the house that would be good to grease it with.
EDIT: Wow, checking again it seems to jump back and forth between gears after shifting and sometimes jumps two cogs at a time.
Have you got any suggestions?
Thanks in advance...
My first guess is that you've clamped the cable on the wrong side of the bolt, it goes on the opposite side to normal ones, affects the pull ratio, and gives symptoms similar to yours.
As above its only a little thing but makes a huge differnace
Look for the grove in the little washer and maybe the mech body
Also worth checking that your mech hanger is straight
put the old one back on and see if the problem disappears again? Would isolate it to the mech and nothing else.
Thanks guys!
The csble's along the groove on the mech body and looks like it's as it should be. The washer hasn't got a groove, unlike on the old mech.
The new mech's new and unused and the parallelogram looks straight. Yes Matthew, I'll check the hanger because I came off on ice on the last ride with the old mech so it could have got a knock.
I'll take it out for a ride now - might behave differently under load - and if there's still the problem, I'll swap the mech back to try it, good call wwaswas! 🙂
d'oh! double-post due to bad internet connection, sorry...
Hi again everyone, and thanks for your help.
LBS say that although the cable was routed correctly, the washer was the wrong way around (as it was when I received it) so it wasn't gripping as much of the cable as it should have done, and that that can make a big difference.
Apart from that, the cable is good. Performance is much better than it was, but it still sometimes takes two clicks to get to and from first gear.
LBS says that XTR was launched as a separate range and I may get better performance if I change to all XT or all XTR shifter/derailleurs instead of the current XT shifters with XTR derailleur because he thinks the indexing might be slightly different.
I don't think so, but I'm just putting it out there.
Much better than it was anyway, and thanks for all your help!
I'm not sure I agree with the LBS my old Camber came from the factory with SLX shifters and an XTR rear Mech.
Have you set the high low screws correctly, and also the other screw that pushes the mech away from the cassette (can't remember the proper term)? And did you set them before you installed the cable?
the other screw that pushes the mech away from the cassette (can't remember the proper term)?
B-Tension screw
That's the one!

Total Nonsense.
