I have a 73mm GXP BB in a 73mm BB shell with an XO crank. The crank is done up good and tight but there is slight lateral play if I pull on the the end of the crank. Any suggestions?
I was thinking of trying a spacer but given both BB and shell are 73mm there shouldn't be a need, right? I don't feel I should tighten the crank more.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Rich
New bb, gxp are easy to fit and fairly cheap.
Thanks for suggestion but crank and bb are nearly new so replacement shouldn't be necessary.
Take it off and re grease the bearing and around the crank, then re fit to the required torque, use a torq wrench. You will find the load on the SRAM site.
You probably won't get the crank bolt up to the correct torque with a conventional allen key. It's something daft like 40Nm IIRC.
There should be a spring washer fitted,if this is there you can get small packers(spacers) that fill up the spaces and adjust the chain line
What does the spring washer look like? One didn't come with the crank.
It takes a lot more force than I thought to do up my X0 cranks- I'm using a Hope BB with GXP adapter.
I thought it was something like 54Nm, but the point still stands, it's quite a bit if you don't have a decent lever.
I can't see how the spacer will remove play from the bearings.
50nm I think for X0 cranks.
Truvativ BBs are pish though so even though there's plenty of other likely causes, I'd be checking that first.
I'm sure you know, but GXP cranks only load on the NDS bearing cup, and the other crank "floats" . This is why you need it so tight to eliminate any play, as opposed to the Shimano principle.
I have a long handle Allen key so I should be able to give it some wellie although I already thought it was pretty tight. Thanks for advice.
As you tighten, keep an eye on the NDS bearing, and watch the crank "close in" on it. Mine takes a lot of force whilst there is still a visible gap. Once the gap closes, you can then cinch it nice and tight.
i knocked a gxp bearing out in less than a month they a pile of shi*e
I have mine in a Chris King BB so might be different
