[Closed] Play in rear wheel after removing and reinstalling cassette

As title, really. I removed the cassette from my rear wheel to replace a broken spoke. No problems there, but I found considerable play in the rear wheel after putting it all back together. Could this be because I haven't torqued the cassette lockring enough or are the two things unrelated? I'm pretty sure there was no play in the wheel before I took the cassette off.

cassette lockring independent of axle position in drop outs.

If its the cassette thats moving left and right, have you forgotten a thin spacer on inboard of the cassette (Mavic wheels need them)?

Does the wheel move on the axle?

Its more likely to be wheel bearings are shot or loose cup and cone (including of course any extra races in the freehub). If its movement at the rim this will certainly be the problem, if it appears to be movement of the cassette then you may not have done the lockring up tight enough-check with a troque wrench.
Oh and dont forget the simplest cause-the QR not done up 😀

So I checked the nuts at either end of the axle and they were loose. I could adjust all the play out by tightening them with my fingers. I think I have the proper adjustment now as there is a small amount of play when the QR is undone and the wheel spins freely with the QR done up (and no play). Does this sound about right?!

Shouldn't be any play in the back wheel at the cassette or in the cones, whether the qr is done up or not.

Take the wheel of completely, take the qr out and if you feel play in the wheel something isn't right... wiggle the cassete about..(if it's there somethings up with your cassetter) and wiggle the 2 bits your qr goes into..(if it's here's your bearings need done/tightened properly.)

Okay, I've read up and apparently I need to adjust this properly. I guess it's okay to ride like this in the meantime while I get some cone spanners...

seosamh: I think you're wrong, there. Sheldon says: "You must set the cones so that there is a little bit of play when the hub is off the bike, or when the wheel is installed with the quick-release just barely tightened."

You have to have a tiny amount of play (but i mean tiny) or when you do up the QR it causes the axle to tighten by the clamping in effect and will cause friction on the bearings (from my experience). Thats why I only run Hope Pro 2's on my bikes, so much more reliable and less service hassle.

Check the freehub is on tight as well.

I faffed about with cone spanners for ages once before I realised the freehub was loose.
