As above, new wheel, anybody else out there suffering something similar?
No, and I've had two pairs. You can tighten them with the mavic c-spanner though.
Or if it's new you could just send it back.
New ones are non adjustable, I know what the problem is (we've had a few already), just wondering if anybody else has had it as both Mavic and Hotlines say they've not come across it.
They are adjustable so you can take the play out.
You need a 17mm open ended spanner and a 13mm cone spanner.
You undone the left hand locking nut with the 17mm spanner, screw in the left hand cone slightly using the 13mm cone spanner and then lock the locking nut back up.
Even on the new 2013 they work the same.
Not the ones we've got problems with, they're held together with a circlip that retains a flat washer, a bevelled washer, and a spring clip. Mavic seem to think that a slightly thicker washer is the way to stop the axle being a loose fit in the bearings.
Have you got any photos?
Nope, haven't even got a camera.
Well this thread is turning out to be useful 😆
Not for me, we've had a few with play (even after being modified, which I really didn't think would work anyway),and I was wondering whether it was widespread,or whether we'd just had a poor batch.Seems it may be the latter, but this is STW, so they may just have taken the bikes home, polished them, and given them pride of place in the living room 🙂

have put pictures of both on my facebook page here Which model of crossride do you have?
The standard QR version according to Mavic 2013 tech sheets use their standard adjustable axle or is it the 15 / 12 that is compression fit?
It's the 12mm rear, the axle seems to be loose in the bearings, can't see a how a thicker spacer washer's going to stop it. As said previously, just wondering if we were alone with it.
I've got the same with my crossride rear with 12mm bolt through. They were new on a new bike last August.
If you have the reciept of purchase of the wheels / bike, contact Mavic customer services at gbcustomerservices@mavic.com you will need the bar code number from inside the rim as well and see what they say.
Sorry I have not worked on any of the 12mm rear wheels yet.
Yup, me too. Going to contact bike supplier.
Was sent back under warranty. Seemed tighter, just fitted it and is loose at hub. Suspect the thicker washer fix has been tried as cant see any evidence of new axle being fitted. Contacted bike supplier again. Another wheel sent back at the same time to the same supplier by a friend has come back similarly unsorted.
coatsey, have you had any better response?
Think we had the offending wheels replaced eventually, can't say for sure at the moment as one of my colleagues was dealing with it, won't be seeing him until Friday to check.
Just waiting for someone to ask for the Mavic tech site log in details.
A popular Groundhog Day thread on the STW massive.
Good heads up on how to fix this. Ill try it without the Mavic tool.
Rear hub on mine has this play but are really old Crossmax STR (?) though so no use for the OP; sorry.
I recently bought a La Pierre Zesty 514 2013 from Evans Cycles- comes with Mavic Crossride wheels. After one ride I detected play in the rear hub- the wheel was sent to Mavic for inspection and returned 'repaired'. The hub felt ok when it was returned but after my second ride it was loose again.
I took the wheel back to Evans and they supplied me with a new wheel.
I have just returned from a weekend away with the new replacement wheel and that too has become loose.
It looks like there is a manufacturing defect with these rear crossride wheels- internal hub bore is too big and so the bearings get play when subjected to a rider's weight?
I've sent Mavic an email directly now and asked them what they think.
Watch this space!
Cheers
Lee
Has anyone had any luck with sorting the free play in hubs of these wheels yet? I have just bought a Canyon 29er with X12 rear axel. I have done 4 rides and there is free play already in he rear. Have taken the wheel to my local bike shop, which is a Mavic dealer and they say, they have not seen this hub before. I am waiting on them contacting Mavic as to how to proceed.
We're currently trying a bearing retaining compound on the axle/bearing interface, no results as yet as the customer has a loan wheel, and hasn't collected it.
Any news on a possible solution? I have the same problem, also on a Canyon 29er with X12 axle.
mfinlayson had his replaced with a new wheel by Canyon. The new wheel seems fine so far. I've no idea what, if anything the difference between the old wheel and the new was though.
Does anyone have any updated info on this issue?
I have the same problem with a rear crossride using the 12 x 142mm axle. It's developed play within 2 weeks of use.
I emailed the LBS where I bought it from about a week or so ago, they have attempted to get hold of Mavic with no luck so far.
The sun's out and I just want to ride the sodding thing!
Same here. Play within 30 kilometers on rear axle (12x142) on my Crossride from my new Canyon 29er.
2013 rear...same issue. Got in March. The play is about 3mm so when its on I can't tell but still worried.
edit...mine is QR
So it's 2013 and Mavic still can't make a metal pole with 2 bearings on it which a wheel can spin on..i cant believe they still get away with it..
You won't get much help from mavic tech, apparently there is meant to be play. I gave up discussing the matter with them in the end. Managed to solve the problem with

Irish_AL
I'm not too clued up with hubs and axles and things but may I ask how that has solved the issue?
On my 29er cross rides, the play was coming from the two little 12mm to qr adapters, which just didnt fit quite snug enough. the sun ringle adaptor is one piece and fits just that little bit better, been running it now for about 3 months with no signs of play.
Ditto. Spanking new Crossmax XT's converted to QR with the adapters out the box. Loads of play on the first ride.
I noticed that the adapters have play in them and that the diameter of the skewer is smaller than the hole in the adapter. It's also slightly thinner than a Hope skewer. However keeping with the Mavic QR skewer I found that tightening up the QR so it was an effort to push the lever over took the play out.
In summary... crap QR adapters and skewer results in play.
Well I have just had another look at mine and it appears that it isn't the actual hub thats providing play but seems to be the maxle that doesn't fit completely snug inside the hub and allows the wheel slight movement.
Is this normal for a 142 x 12mm wheel to do this?
Just took mine to the LBS. Did a quick service...and all is good. Bit of crap in there 🙂
sorry to drag this up - I've just fitted a set of crosstrails to my ghost. First time just going round the block no issues but 4 days later I'm getting a clicking noise when I push hard on the pedals (fine if I just cruise about) its a clicking noise I'm getting is this down to the crap QR adptors? changing skewer made no difference.
Hi, I'm having this issue as well. Crossride 2012 rear is 9.5mm version. After 2 rides I noticed a little play on the rear wheel. Is there anything to do with this issue except for tighten the axle, That I already did ?
Thanks
I've got some new 2009 Crosstrails (lying around the LBS for a couple of years) with QR and also noticed the rear wheel working loose during rides. I replaced the Mavic skewer with a Hope one and it seems to have solved the problem - for the moment anyway. I think the suspected play in the axle was actually the skewer loosening.
As mentioned before took my rear wheel to the lbs who spent 5mins giving it a clean. This was 5mths ago and play has come back. Might take it down again or look into doing it myself. Any hub should be serviced after 1000 miles I would think.
I thought I had the same "problem" few month after I got my Zesty 414. BUT after a lot of reading and getting my wheel back from Mavic, I finally understood and I know how to fix it ! No more problem now
d4ilyrider - MemberI thought I had the same "problem" few month after I got my Zesty 414. BUT after a lot of reading and getting my wheel back from Mavic, I finally understood and I know how to fix it ! No more problem now
So,eh...what was the fix ?
And then the freehub packs up !!!! I've had A set of crossrides for 3 years and not a squeak! Got some 2013 29 ERS and the bearings went closely folowed by the free hub after 9 mths of use :'(
Got the same problem after 2 rides from new with a X12 crossride hub. Stripped and cleaned completely in case the spring was not sliding down the washer and pulling up the slack against the bearing and its still the same - anyone know a fix?
Seems the foolproof solution is the one followed by the owner of the hub in the original post, he borrowed a Hope hubbed wheel from us while we attempted to sort his, and hasn't been seen or heard from since 🙂
I've got this problem with a crosstrail hub. Cannot see a way to preload the hub.
I fixed mine by buying something else and putting the Crossrides on the Mrs bike for towpath use.
Have been told its designed to have a "tiny" amount of play. Did everyones play remain the same once noticeable or get progressively worse/ how bad??
I have the same issue with Crossrides '13, front 15 mm and 142/12 rear. The play doesn't seem to get any worse but it is there. Went back to LBS and they "fixed" it. After few miles problem returned.
I got nowhere trying to get it fixed through Mavic with my 2013 crossrides so instead changed the standard rear axle with a Shimano e-thru one and it's drastically reduced. It's still slightly noticeable but not at all whilst riding and hasn't got any worse.
Nobody appears to have found a proper fix for it or if they have they haven't bothered to let everyone know about it.
Sorry to bring this thread back, how do you remove the tip of the axle..is it a compress fit?
When you say the tip of the axle do you mean the red adaptors? if so yes they are press fit.
i have mine too brand new 2014 mavic crosstrail. just two rides and i notice a play on my rear hub how do i fix this one? is there any solution for this?

Get rid of them and buy something else?
TBH, not sure...I've just cleaned mine and it's taken some of the play away but still pretty bad. Might take it down to my LBS again to look at and may ask them to talk to Mavic. I would contact who you got yours from to ask what to do, not good is it.
Hi,
same issue on my Canyon Grand Canyon AL SLX 7.9 which comes with Mavic Crossride 29" wheels. Only done about 70 miles on it and noticed this today when checking tire pressure.
I read some German forums where people say "bit of play is OK" and other people try to address the issue with ways which I don't understand (hey I bike not a mechanic)...
Anyway I asked Canyon and will go to my lbs to see what they say... lets hope its not "should have bought from us" as I already went there to bleed my Avid's too (Canyon paid).
Will update when I hear back from both 😕
PS: german forum links:

So Canyon did confirm those hubs cannot be adjusted but when I do my first inspection they will do my hub and could adjust the axes somehow... anyway didn't get it.
I did find this:
Hub play must always be gauged with the wheel fitted and tightened in the frame or fork. Tightening the quick release skewer significantly increases the lateral pressure
exerted on the bearings. Therefore:
• if there is play in a wheel not fitted into the frame or fork, it may disappear once the wheel has been fitted;
• if there is no play in a wheel not fitted into the frame or fork, it is possible that tightening the quick release skewer will over-stress the bearings, thus damaging
themThis tightening force is a subjective parameter that is directly dependent on the end user, and as such it is difficult to accurately determine the optimum bearing adjustment
at the factory.
In order to avoid any problems for your customers, we factory set bearing play by simulating an extreme quick release tightening force.
So a quick read about the Syntace X-12 axel on the Canyon website says tighten with 20Nm which seem extreme to me but not knowing what 20Nm of force feels like I bought a decent enough torque key which arrived today and after I applying 17Nm the play which was minimal already was even less minimal and now at 18.8Nm its gone.
The hub I swear sounds a bit deeper/silenter too now but that might be my imagination.
Anyway issue fixed 8)
The hub is designed with circlip and spring that should press against conical washer and eliminate movement. Cheap design that simply doesn't work and I doubt you will be able to eliminate the side play without some design change ie. maybe extra washer. Tightening the axle seems to work but only for a while.
Hi,
I've a 13 Canyon Nerve AL 7 with Mavic Crossride wheels
Bike still under warranty but have to send parts back to Canyon then they have to send to Mavic and then I don't ride for a month, blah,blah.......
Anyway Problems with massive front wheel play so I fitted SKF 6001-2RSH but still small amount of play is evident and not possible to adjust. So I've just ordered 7001-2RS MAX Enduro Angular Contact Bearing 12x28x8 which I'm hoping will cure the problem. I think maybe they are fitting the wrong bearings in these wheels?!
And the rear? Funnily enuff rear wheel bearings are OK but massive amounts of play btween free hub and cassette. Awaiting new cassette from Canyon so again hoping this will cure it. Will, post again and tell you.
Anyone else had issues with the front hub?
And why can't you talk to Mavic?
Booney

I have play in my rear x12 crossride hub. There is no way I will send the bike back to Canyon again so I am interested to see if your solution works. Can you keep us updated?
I suppose my other option is to buy a new hub. I have no idea which one. If anyone has gone down this route what hub did you swap to?
...now after 3 months from previous post "All fixed" above:
Hub made a bit of a squeaky noise recently so went to LBS who "greased it up" and noise was gone. Notice today after 2 rides though a lot of side to side play...
One more time to LBS and see if they can do anything if not I will ride it hard, live with it and see if/when it gets worse and then get some DT Swiss wheels... f. Mavic and not going to bother with Canyon and warranty.
LBS is sending them to Mavic... skipping the me to Canyon to Mavic route so hopefully turnaround time is a bit better.
so got them back and took a ride today so far so good... but pretty sure Mavic changed quite a few things inside the wheel as it looks like I have QRM+ now 😀 from the outside the wheel is mine apart from the adjustable QRM thingy now so I suspect the insides have changed, see picture:

Well...; so far. We have several sets of CrossRides. Two pre-2013 with which I've had no problem whatsoever. The post-2013 set is bestowed with 27" rims on a Turner Burner - and uses a DT Swiss through-axle. Just a bit of side-to-side play at the rim, which we've been able to deal with by snugging the through-axle. The bike's almost a year old now, and we've just noticed enough play to warrant taking things apart to see what's going on. The hub internals were in surprisingly good shape. A little gooey where you'd expect, and damp in the axle bore - but we ride all year around in mud-country & incorporate a couple of creek crossings on a fairly regular basis - so no real surprises. Overhauled the hub. No new parts necessary (wait - there's more to come). Everything looked pretty darn good in there - with the exception of the 12mm adapters. Straightforward servicing. The axle itself is well captured in the bearings, and the bearings can't be "pre-loaded" because they all exist between two snap-rings - one on each end of the axle. The snap-rings stop the longitudinal loading on the axle, that would (without them) effect the bearings - which Mavic apparently doesn't want to happen any more than the tapered-washer & spring "automatic" pre-loading. In our case..., this play thing, is all about the ID of the axle, being just a smidge bigger than the OD of the through-axle (not really an "axle", but a removable shaft to hold the axle & everything attached to it, in the right place). Even with the overhaul, there's still some lateral slop between the axle & the through-axle - and with no apparent wear of either part. What I did find is that the 12mm adapters had ssignificant wear, and the little 0.5mmx18(?)mm o-ring "keepers" fitted inside the adapters were trashed. So for $16 - I got a new pair coming in the mail. Hopefully will arrive before the weekend - or it'll be a hard-tail ride (on a set of perfectly functional pre-2013 CrossRides). I'm guessing that normal wear of the adapters may be allowing the axle to through-axle slop to be felt more readily. And may have be preventing the axle to seat properly in the frame - which could have some negative effect on getting the through-axle tight enough. And if not..., it's probably more annoying than really damaging - so we'll continue to ride them and start shopping for a new set of wheels - probably DT Swiss. I'll get back with an update when we've had a chance to fit the new adapters & snug everything down.
Just resurrecting this thread. Is there a fix for this as I bought a set of used crossrides and they've developed this problem..
If it's the same issue we had, the bearings were sloppy on the axle, Mavic tried unsuccessfully to fix it by fitting thicker preload washers behind the circlips (pointless as that wasn't where the play was), and we ended up using a bearing retaining compound on the axle to take up the slack.
OK better late than never update!
Rear wheel hub developed some play and had to go back to Mavic and they sent me a brand new pair of Crossrides.
Great for a while, then the play came back again! Talked to a dealer who said he was giving up on Mavic Mtb wheels
because of all the problems. So it's not a case of "oh we've never had any complaints before" they are just a shite hub design. The little clip assembly thats meant to take up the play is like a DIY bodge to get you home at best.
So now my bike is well out of warranty and I have massive rear wheel play and there's no real permanent solution.
Marvellous Mavic?
