Why would this be? Is it normal? If not what have i done wrong?

Does it mean that the axle is worn?

Iirc, they have a bushing in them, it's most likely this that's worn. I think dmr do a service kit but it's not cheap. Plan b, stuff them full of grease, it works if they're not too knackered.

Reminds me, I've got to do mine.

Yeah bush on axle/crank side... Wears really quickly as the seal is pretty rubbish (bearing the other side).

Plastic bush here:

Or I have had better luck with metal bush which is cheap as chips! From here

The Bush is 14mm OD, 12mm ID and 12mm long. Well it was in both sets of my vaults I stripped a year or so ago and doubt they have changed the design!

I just had the same thing, quick clean and regrease and still had play.  The bearings were fine, so I bought the bushings only from Bearing Boys and it were really easy to fit.  Now the play has gone and they are back to their best.

I haven't just cleaned them, I've bought the service kit and fully serviced them as I have the service tool.

Replaced bushing, bearing, axle nut and end cap, the lot. There's still play.

Missing the washer under the nut?

You popped the rubber seals back into the bush? I forgot to do that when I first serviced mine.

Based on my experience of how crap the internals on Vaults are, yes it is normal.

Replacing the bush with a metal one helped prolong the issue last time for me, but it's still there.

Hence why they live in the spares box now. The cost of the service kit, when it's generally just the bush that wears, is offensive.

I've had fantastic life form mine... but yeah, just the bush that wears.

Spares kits are a lot cheaper in Germany - 13 euro as opposed to 25 in UK

Replaced bushings on mine with cheap as chips metal DU from a bearing supplier, rather than crazy service kit price from DMR, and still get play in mine at the bushing end. I just slap loads of grease on the axle which keeps it from rattling for a bit. I think the axle is worn.

Got one set of Vaults though that seem to be lasting a lot longer. Newer, but been nearly two years and not a hint of play, yet the others I've got developed it within six months.

I had a pair for 5 years or so and in the end new axles were the only fix for the wobble.
