As the turning of the tide of shorter nights approaches, thoughts turn to fairer weather, Longer days, and bucket lists. So, with that in mind, what rides/events/adventures/goals are floating your boat for 2017?.

Events - I'm only really planning both of the Ard events, which are august and september, don't think I'm going to bother with any other enduro's tbh, but maybe something will catch my eye.

More Lakes exploring, I've really enjoyed getting away from well known routes and just picking stuff off the maps, never had a bad day yet, I'll have at least 3 or 4 Lakes weekends.

Couple of weekends further north too, one around Kintail to explore the Beinn Fhada loop, and some time with Captain Mainwaring around the Cairngorms too.

Started doing a bit more trailbuilding this year, planning to get some Macleod type tools made up and step that up a wee bit.

I'd also like to finally make the long journey down to Herts shore from SW Scotland for a day with Jedi, and tie it in with a visit to a mate in St Neotts, maybe even take wee nobeerette back to Harry Potter world.

Over to you...

I've already entered the Tour Of Flanders at the start of April which should keep me motivated to ride through February and March. Other than that, nowt. I rode over 6000 miles in 2015 and it will only be 4000 in 2016. So a nice middle 5000 for 2017 is probably a good target.

Since having married a Norfolk girl and ending up in the flatlands, i've spent too long riding on skinny tyres, fitness has increased and i've clocked up 8500 miles for the year, but i want to get more back more on knobbly tyres!

Entered the Dirty Reiver already and have pre-registerd for the French Divide, so need to clock more serious time on my Salsa Fargo.

Also looking at Capital Trail, Nice-Torino and Mount Blanc route.

Tis exactly why I moved away after 30yrs, there's some cheeky places to play but depends on where you are in Norfolk, it's a big place.

Plans for 2017:

Richmond 5 dales
Couple other 100+ mile sportives in the Dales/Peaks/Pennine area
More Lakes and Scotland MTB especially after reading that 2016 Mountain thread.
More riding on the north side of the M62 (Calderdale)

Run a marathon.
Ride a 100 mile on the road in under 5 hours.
Clock 5000 miles total.
Work to home (38 miles) in under 1 hour 50m.
Lose a stone. 1 down, 1 more to go.
Edit, and maybe a triathlon. I'm certainly debating it anyway.

A day with Jedi
A weekend trip to a couple of Wales trail centres, not having been since the late 90s
Ride from home (Basingstoke) to my parents house in Lymington. 60ish miles - my biggest ride by far.
Lap of the IOW - better than a day mixing with my in laws...
Possibly a week in the Alps, depending on negotiations with my wife

More challenges, more fun, more travel, more overnighters, more photos.

Paris Roubaix sportive booked (full length)
Cambrian mountains and Brecons
Northumberland
SDW in a day
Quantocks
Exmoor
Local overnighters planned
'Snaps before Strava' - not worrying about overall mileage, avg speed, or segments, and taking the time to take photos whenever I want.
Taking a hip flask on touring/bikepacking trips
Finally go tubeless!

-More triathlons, specifically sprint, assuming that I can last the 10k run.
-More actual mountain biking on actual mountains (on actual mountain bikes), instead of little hills and the odd bit of 4x.
-C2C or something similar
-At least one good sportive each quarter.

Focusing on CX next year so much less XC racing for me next year, maybe 4 races tops. Going to not think about training till May, just ride for fun but with long base rides in mind.

A more road orientated year in store for me in 2017.
The main event of the year will be a 5-day NC500 with a charity group, however with the bulk of the group being new cyclists, there will be a fair few day rides and sportives with them to try and get them in shape and do some team building.

In addition:
I'm trying to work up the courage to enter DR200.
I'm hoping to do my first 200mi road ride.
Once I see my fatigue levels after NC500, i'll most likely do Relentless again either pair (if tired)/solo (if fresh and motivated).

I'll also be looking to fit in at least 3 rounds of SMBO as they are great fun.

The White Roads Classic (deferred from this year due to injury)

The Wales Sportif aka the bike leg of the Tenby Long Course Weekend (munqe chick doing the whole thing)

3 weeks road riding in the Italian Dolomites (all the stuff we missed this year) and the Swiss Alps, hopefully timed to take in Stelvio Bike Day again*

Qualify for the '16-'17 season CX National Champs

Possibly throw in a 7000 mile goal, as I had 6000 as a goal this year and hit it in November (but left myself a bit too much work to hit 7000 this year!)

And maybe start riding my mountain bike again (not used since May)!

*and yes I know the Stelvio is in the Italian Alps so no need to call the #dolomitepolice

No events.
Apart from local XC series that is.
More weekends riding new (to me) trails: Shropshire, Scottish Borders, Wales.
Some longer XC outings, including Sheff to Mcr.
At least monthly long road ride over colder months for base fitness.
Probably a trip up to NW Scotland, rather than Europe.
Continue exploring not-quite-local trails, eg. Hebden, Pennines.

Off the bike;

more running (particularly off-road - VV Explorer might play a part)
Get the blog active again
Get the van converted to a campervan and make use of it!

I've taken ages to decide what I;'m doing next year, but I want to run an ultra, so that will be my focus.

jan to march good diet, no drink and lots of training running, cycling and gym, to run my first trail marathon at end of march.

from there build up to an ultra in july / august, I want to do 50 miles at least.

then, cross in the winter

I think I'm probably 'going the other way' to most posters.

My New Year Resolution is to stop using Strava, Smiles an hour not Miles an Hour.

I've got a Skills Course at BPW to look forward to, or not, see BPW Voucher thread for details.

Make an effort to beat fear of drops.

Passportes in June (or is it July) but I'm not entering and won't ride the full course. (see point 1).

Maybe a Endruo race in Autumn, but only if I think it'll be fun.

Only thing booked is GT7 in May.

I will beat 7 laps this year!
Couple of places I've not been this year that I'll try and visit:
Fort William - scare myself on the DH track for a day
Arran - overdue a revisit

and teach my daughter how to ride her balance bike!

More fun on bikes, a few local DH races with the chance of maybe possibly having a go at an enduro, bimbles out for curry and beer and to food festivals, few track days on me motorbike- that sort of thing. Business as usual really!

The biggest thing for me in 2017 is having Jun/Jul/Aug off work.It was either that or finish full stop..
April I'm entered for the Dirty Reiver
May I'm doing the Lakes Jennride
Jun either going for a few days to the Isle of Man TT or finally going to Fort william for the World Cup round.
July I'm doing a Trek around Mont Blanc
A few of us are planning a Bikepacking weekend on the MTL.
I'm thinking about doing the Cairngorm loop & also finally getting to Skye for some hiking.
I'm also thinking about doing the South Downs Way when I'm off work.I've been told to wait for a dry spell before doing it,I've 3 months off so it should be dry at some stage 😆

Entered the Ard Moors and will hopefully do a couple of other enduros. Also hoping to enter the Batch Burner for the 4th year in a row.

Some riding in the states as part of our holiday, a day or two at Moab and hopefully somewhere else as well.

Other than that, just carry on enjoying riding bikes, as 99.9% time I finish a ride with a smile on my face. Bikes are bloody brilliant 😀

Well, it appears that I've decided to try and do the bb bivy a month 'challenge' (although I'm counting the Highland Winter one as my starting point 😀 ).

Currently mulling over a Hogmanay bivy to really kick it off though!

The Cairngorm Loop I'm thinking will be feature as I'll probably split into two loops first before linking it altogether as an ITT.

I'm planning on tackling the HT550 route. I'll start off as an ITT and see how it goes but expect it will turn into a tour instead. Probably plan it for just after the main event hoping they'll have beaten a track to make it easier to follow....

The Deeside Trail is on the doorstep, probably pencil that in for late summer.

And I need to start commuting to work, just to get the miles in/help raise some semblance of fitness.... 😳

Cant get on the bike until June/July following a knee op. So counting down the days and hoping it's sorted.

Assuming it is... enter every local winter race late 2017 to remind myself what I've missed. Be happy at placing last as its better to be out than sat on the sofa, whatever the ride whatever the conditions.

Whilst off the bike might watch some British Downhill Series races if local, not done that since the 90s.

Might volunteer to Marshall local xc races but they probably won't want someone who can't run or walk well.

Toss up between Medical Paristology and Medical Microbiology, Control of Infectious Disease is a maybe - due to me not having enough developing world experience. That's the one I'd really like to do though, as I want to do something that is a bit of a mix up of public health and lab work. Paristology might get me out of the lab a bit as well and doing something fun in the developing world.

If I stay in an industrial lab, I'm going to get depressed and angry. Did you enjoy your time there?

Bought an Etrex, so more exploring in The Lakes. Currently self-employed so bimbling currently as I can't have any time off work (as I don't get paid), however I fancy another session with Jedi later in the year as the last one was mint. Mainly fitness goals for me as I have let it slip drmatically.

So:
Want a 150kg squat and 200kg deadlift back, then the rest are cycling aims,
Clear the Loughrigg Terrace Climb without walking any of it (apart from getting off for the gates).
Sub 30 minutes up Cragg Vale on the CX (I'm fat, so these times won't seem quick to lots of people).
Sub 10 minutes on a local bridleway near me (Thornham Old Road).

I think for me, it'll be:

- start cycling to my work again
- lose 1 1/2 stone
- complete the Bealach Mor in under 6 hrs. ( 6hrs 1min is my best to date! )

thats good enough for me.

Lots of exciting things planned for next year, it should be a better year than 2016 at least!

New bike (probably Orbea oiz)
New job
Get on the property ladder (that's a big scary one!)
More holidays (Bruges in Feb already booked)
Go to more gigs (The XX and Sunn O))) tickets bought)
Do awesome things on bikes

Rovaniemi 300 (in 8 weeks 😯 )
Will probably make another attempt at a SDW Double - OK on an MTB/CX, bit tougher on a fatbike
Might make an attempt at a 100km running - work commitments make it harder to get the bike miles in.
Probably some ITTs and bikepacking....

Backpack my way home from oz with the Australian missus and hopefully reacquaint myself with the motherland for a few years. And make a decision about doing a masters or changing career, my enthusiasm for my current direction oscillates wildly.
Actually sort out my fitness and start riding and walking in some proper hills again. Also having failed to do even attempt this years half marathon maybe one of them. And start climbing again.

CX ride home from work next Friday. 😀

Edit: I'll have a 1987 Raleigh Randonnuer built up shortly (thanks to the extremely generaous teasel off here), with bar end shifters and 2 bits of Carradice luggage, so I really should find some audaxes!

Get down to comfortably under 16 stone and stay there by Easter (currently 16.8)

Get down to 15 stone and stay there by the summer.

Cycle Greenwich Park to Paris in the few days leading up to Easter (arrive Paris good Friday)

I've entered the ballot for ride London - doubt i'll get a place as done it the last 2 years via the ballot.

Might do Dunwich Dynamo if I don't get a ride London place.

Ride more than 3000 miles. This was my target for 2016, I'm currently at 2800, and have a very busy two weeks ahead of me so don't think I'm going to make it. 🙁

Mountain bike is Ard Moors and an off road tour, probably a coast to coast from Inverness to Ratagan via Glen Affric or possibly a Cairngorms loop. Apart from that try to tick some Scottish classics boxes.

Road bike is a Mull tour and a tour up North taking in a bit of the NC500

Running, I've entered the Glencoe marathon, going to try my hand at hill running and probably a half in there too.

The kids are a wee bit older and I have a wee bit more free time on my hands so getting a bit fitter will be the overall aim for the year.

Trying to work it out at the moment but depending on whether I have to have an operation on my ankles:

Dyfi Antifreeze
Jennride
Home to sea over a weekend
Snowdonia big offroad loop linking Penmachno, Marin, Antur and CyB.
A couple of uplift days.
A fortnight in BSM (and try to get back to Pila).

I've managed to wangle a weeks paid biking next year, the only drawback being it's in the gravity enduro discipline! Sites being visited include Revolution Bike Park

I've never competed before and probably the most down-oriented biking I've done is the blues at BPW.

Objective : Try not to die.
Plan : Train fitness, lose weight, ride more challenging stuff.

Firstly 50 in Jan so off to Seville for a few days. Then plan on getting the all clear from the hospital....got camera down my old man into my bladder to look forward to!!!. Then some riding...Mayhem 24hour solo already booked. Hopefully all or some of.... Scott Marathon series. Possibly Manx 100, Kielder 101, Wales and Scotland trips definitely this year. Basque country in motorhome again with a trip to Orbea factory and maybe hook up with Basque Mtb in Hondarribia, then if time allows on to Zona Zero for some quality riding. Busy busy busy.

Even with the rides I've not Strava'd I'm struggling to hit 700 miles this year which is utterly crap (even more so since nearly 250 of that is a 2 mile ride to the station and back whenever I feel like it). Going to aim for a thousand proper off-road miles next year and ride to the station every day.

Events wise I'm doing the Ard Rock. Can't be faffed with anything else at the minute. The PMBAs seem to have got a little serious for my liking from what they were like a few years back when I first started doing them.

I'd quite like to organise a local, completely low key 'enduro' using Strava to time segments etc if I find time.

More trail building.

Give myself a big kick up the arse to motivate riding to work at least twice a week (27-odd miles there and back).

Generally improve my fitness, strength and flexibility by getting back into regular swimming, rock-wall climbing and yoga.

Thin down my collection of assorted bicycle odds and sods, sell off my half-finished and in some cases unstarted projects to find some breathing room.

Spend more time on a ****ing bike than looking at pictures of cycle-related shiny stuff/fantasising about what components my dream bike would consist of.

Get more involved in local trail building/maintenance.

Maintain a Strava-free cycling life.

Generally take more time out to smell the roses...

Working on my VeloViewer Explorer Square (currently 12x12)

This sounds interesting, what does it mean?

I have yet to finalise any plans for 2017. I cannot decide whether to aim for 5000 or 6000 miles, although 5000 is a bit of a cop out.
Have yet to decide on our main holiday, but at the moment am considering (wife and I) cycling from Belfast to Dublin to Cardiff - people's thoughts ??
However, I would like to be a bit more adventurous this year. Following the bimble thread, the 'lonely' threads and the bivi/wild camping threads, I am considering suggesting an STW beginners, bimble, bivi/wildcamp weekend trip somewhere in central Scotland. However, I'm no planner and rather shy.

Just the BC bike race with bullandbladder up there ^

And RideLondon for Crohns and Colitis UK.
Tour of Ben Nevis.
A few road trips hopefully to The Lakes and Scotland.
A few big days put on the road bike ticking off some of the routes out of 40 Great British Bike Rides.
And maybe pop my bike packing cherry.

@gauss1777: The Veloviewer Explorer Square is the biggest number of contiguous NxN OS map squares you have ridden in, so 2x2, 3x3, etc. Veloviewer get their data from Strava so you need to log your rides there.

For the 5th year in a row I plan to do the west highland way. You never know, might actually happen.

Mostly just going to keep doing the same stuff I always do, because it's ace.

Ahem not that I stupidly started a duplicate thread because I didn't do a search! (Hoping it disappears off pg1 soon)

My aims are

1) Race a 12hr solo (twentyfour12)
2) Do some bikepacking including some wild camping
3) Ride the SDW which may include goal 2 as I am very slow!

Got my first gravel race of the year in February, in Australia. Might also try to ride across Tassie on the same trip or do a route like the Goldfields Track.
We did consider riding Paris-Roubaix again because it's an awesome ride but will probably do a long weekend in Mallorca instead.
We've Twentyfour/12 in the diary too. But most importantly I want to do more bikepacking in 2017, just weekends away on the Grade or MTB. Looking forward to 2017, from a riding pov...
