Looking at getting my lad a CX bike and the Planet X XLA SL seems to be a good deal plus he likes the idea of putting it together himself using the pick it, build it, ride it offer. Now I must admit all this CX lark is new to me so a bit confused size wise. He's a fraction under 6'2 and rides a 58cm road bike or 19" MTB. Whats the general rule of thumb with CX sizing and does anyone own this frame that can offer any insights size wise ? . I would have thought a slightly smaller frame than your road bike to give you a bit more stand over height like on an MTB mainly so that you don't damage the family jewels. However a live chat with PX support suggests to go for the XL which is pretty much the same size as his road bike but I was thinking perhaps go for a large so its a tad smaller ?. TIA for any advice.
CX bikes actually tend to have longer seat tubes than gravel or road bikes to make them easier to shoulder carry.
I'm 6', ride a 56cm Road bike (Genesis Equilibrium) and also ride a large XLA with a 80mm stem. Smae with ~100 mm stem would probably do for your lad.
Thanks guys. Danreilly out of interest how much seat post do you have sticking out of the frame. A bit unscientific I know but adding roughly 2 inches to your measurement will give me an idea of how much he would have. Keen to place an order in the next day so he can get out practising for the cross season over the summer holidays but just don't want to order the wrong size.
