Recently picked up an sram rival tempest (which I love), but as I am a massive child I'm keen to see if I can get it setup for electronic shifting.
The frame isn't di2 compatible, although it has internal cabling to the rear mech, but am I right in thinking I could use an external battery, 11 speed xt mech, a road xt shifter for a functional 1x11 setup?

Sram etap would presumably be easier, but looks a lot more expensive...

How would you get the wire from the battery to the rear mech/shifters?

I haven’t looked, but I imagine lots of places will be selling off the (non AXS) 11 speed etap stuff, if they haven’t already?

I'd go Di2 wired with an internal battery in the seatpost or somewhere
I can't seeing it being hard to do if you "only" want 1x11 (I'd be happy enough drilling the BB for a front mech wire, or maybe there's already a drain hole that you could use)
Am I missing something?

Thanks both. No, not missing anything, it's probably really straightforward- just wondered if there might be any compatibility gotchas I hasnt considered.

Have you got brand new sram Rival 1 on there then? I’d like to try that or di2 (with a front mech) on my road bike (mainly used for commuting up to 18 miles per day) as I hate the front mech on my bike (105 with non-series hydraulic shifters)!

If you can make di2 work then that always looks cheaper than etap when I’ve looked - but I’m not sure I’d fancy drilling a new titanium frame I’d just bought. Etap definitely would be much easier to fit.

If you’ve got internal cabling for the rear mech surely you could run the wires in there and somehow get them to a battery inside the seatpost and then up to the handlebars? I’ve never had di2 before but if no front mech three does that avoid he need for a junction box that needs to be hidden somewhere?

Yeah the rival 1 works really well to be fair. Use it for commuting and then some mixed surface riding at weekends. Coming from 105 2*11 myself and the only thing I'm missing is some top end speed (and I'm not a fast rider so I can live with that). Hills are fine.

I did a quick calculation on sheldon brown and if I went from 11-34 with a 36/52 setup like now to an 11-42 with a 44t single up front I’d have the same low gear but just lose a bit at the top. Having said that I don’t think I normally use the 52-11 combination at all. A 44-11 is the same as a 52-13 as far as I can workout so I think 1x would work pretty well for me.

That said I wonder what would cost more - swapping out the entire 195 setup for rival1, or keeping all the chainrings/ cassette / brakes / hoses I’ve got and just changing the sti’s and mechs for di2?

All pondering because I don’t have any spare cash for bike upgrades right now!

Garfy and Joe not sure if it helps or not but I'm looking for a set of hydraulic disc and sti units if the price is right for me. Initially to go on a as disc bike but I may move them to a geared bike in future hence rather by with that option than the trip brake only unit. If not selling then no worries thought I'd mention it
