Thats not exactly what i would call a jump bike. What am i missing??

I also struggled a bit with this. It looks like a trailbike. 29er wheels and a 130mm fork...

I don’t know much about jumping, but comparing that to the Calibre jump bike it doesn’t look very similar!

Surely a jump bike doesn’t need 130mm of (noodly Judy) suspension, 29er wheels or an Eagle drivetrain. And surely it’s too long and slack?

...and with fairly knobbly looking tires in the pictures, too.

All this said, compared with my NS Eccentric Alu, the geometry is very similar. So I'd probably be pretty happy to have a Jack Flash as a trail bike 🙂

At the price, you can't go too far wrong tbh. I've read lots of fairly negative things about SX, and I suspect the fork isn't great, but hey -- for that money it'll get you going and you can replace stuff later if required.

As a budget trail hardtail that’s probably not a bad price though - can’t imagine you’re going to get 12 speed for £700 anywhere else. Fork is a weak point - probably rather have the Suntour XCR32 air that equivalent Vitus’ are running but other than that it’s solid stuff and the frame looks nice.

As a trail bike it looks fine. My point was that it is being sold as a jump bike.

Where does this fit really? Given the scandal and the big dog... It seems pretty similar?

Does look a bit like a cheap version of a Scandal. But when they could presumably make a profit selling Scandal frames very cheaply surely it's barely worth it? Especially when the better spec'd scandal isn't that much more.

Really not pretty is it?
And really not a jump bike!

Swing and a miss. That stamped 'X' on the seatstay bridge/gusset things looks very cheap.

Presumably next they'll make a version of the Gimp that is also a LLS (ish) hardtail...

What the heck is that?

Is it a value trail bike with heavy unnecessary extra gussets and things?

Is it a hardcore trail bike with the wrong fork?

A mis-specced jump bike with bad (for jumping) geo and big wheels?

Is that a lightweight road bike saddle perched up there?

Who would buy such a thing? WTF?

I reckon the first thing - budget trail bike with a slightly flimsy fork (but probably par for the money) and unnecessary extra gussets.

All the WTF here. What is that supposed to be? Because its sure as hell not a jump bike.

Pale imitation of the original.

Oh for what it is, it looks good. But it's not a Jack Flash. If they'd resurrected the Bommer name it could have worked as that was closer to what this is.

I'm a little disappointed, their social advertising about it being an exact replica & jokes (I think) about post dated cheques were a little wide of the mark.

It's about as similar to the original Jack Flash as a new MINI is to a proper one. Nothing particularly wrong with it, it's just not right.

I'm out.

Interesting that the other manufacturer to reuse a model name recently is slightly up-market from PX. I haven't heard of the new heckler getting the same response.

But the heckler was not a jump bike in its first life.  The Jack Flash was, and this is being marketed as such.  Which is sad.

I was actually going to use that as another example of something that is the same in name only. Like a Bikepacking specific Chameleon. As soon as you throw a label on a Chameleon it loses its purpose.

Sometimes you're better letting something die than keeping it moving in a fake skin.

From the ad I just get the impression that it's tough enough as a budget bike to jump.nothing about it being a jump bike.looks brilliant for someone young who likes rowdy riding on a budget with decent geo and upgradeable forks.really like it.well done planet x

No-one's said it's a crap bike, it's just that it's got as much in common with a jump bike as it has with a gravel bike.

Oh god what have they gone and done. I used to own an original Jackflash and it was a great jump bike. Wouldn't fancy hitting any jumps on that thing.

And? XC bikes can also be ridden on the road, down DH courses, over trials obstacles and on BMX tracks. That doesn’t make an XC bike a road bike, a DH bike, a trials bike or a BMX.

The smallest one seems quite big still, so you cant really size it right down.

Very odd bike

I would love a new Zebedee

My point was that it is being sold as a jump bike.

They must have changed the description then. I've just clicked on the link above and as far as I can see it is being sold as a mountain bike.

"PLANET X JACK FLASH 29ER SRAM SX MOUNTAIN BIKE"
"130mm of super smooth travel for attacking the trail without unbalancing the handling"
"Positive, 12 speed sequential shifting up to a 51 tooth wall climbing winch"

Yup . . . that ^

and @rOcKeTdOg . . . that is cool as FReAK! You still got it?

Always wanted one and picked up a lovely red frame a couple of years ago off the 'Bay - sadly it was the loooong version though - useless for a shortass like me 🙁

Look again. First paragraph :

Its been a long time coming but the day has finally arrived for Jumping Jack Flash to jump again!!

I had a Bommer BITD, basically a vertical dropout version of the Gimp. Was matt black and got replaced with a Daktari cheetah version when I folded the downtube. That was was punted to fund a Le Toy before I built it. Like I said this is more akin to that than the Jack Flash albeit the Flash was aluminium and Bommer steel.

The Zebedee was the trials specific one, what was the Pitbull?

@simondbarnes

To get to the bit you quoted you have to scroll past this:

Its been a long time coming but the day has finally arrived for Jumping Jack Flash to jump again!!

The Planet X Jack Flash is so deeply entrenched in the history of both the company, and the underground dirt jump community that youll struggle to find someone who didnt own one, or knew someone who did. In fact, we know theres still plenty of the original model still jumping today!

Seems daft to mention this and use the name if its just another trail bike.

Having said that the last Specilaized Pitch was even further off the mark.... 😉

It kinda alludes to it.

On-one / Planet X are a bit like Surly to me. In that I've no real idea who a chunk of their range is aimed at and it seems to overlap significantly

Jesus @tdog, did YOU design this? You seem to be taking this pretty seriously. It's an opinion albeit one of a fair consensus. Get over it. If you like it so much buy it, nobody could care less. Hope you enjoy it if you do.

I've put an order in. Can't find anything better for the price. Looks like the same geo as the scandal but with 10mm longer chainstays.

I'm looking for a used frame but I'd go for it if only I knew the dropouts, headset, BB
I got forks, headset, BB, cranks and drivechain, brakes, 142x12 wheels (that would cost to convert or rebuild) but I'm not pressing the button

This is the other.other ....

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FRPXJF25D/planet-x-jack-flash-25-year-anniversary-disc-frame

Rock solid build with retro looks, square stays, external cable routing and rear disc mount mounts. We've updated the headtube to take a tapered steerer but other than that it's still an unashamedly retro 26" wheeled dirt jump bike.

Raid the shed and refresh your old 26er. Pub,Street or Jump bike the Jack Flash is the Jack of all trades.

No fork info other than "tapered", no dropout info, no headset info ...

I reckon by eyeballing it it'll be a 135mm QR rear end, 27.2mm seatpost, 1 1/8" - 1.5" tapered steerer.

Finbar ... guessing the same and BSA threaded but its basically just a guess.
£20 delivery or £20+ for me to get a new axle.... and still not sure of the headtube internals

I got a spare fork I can take down to 130 for free or 100 (for £££) and spare 27.2 seatpost but not enough info to take a punt.

why would you build a dirt jump frame without sliding dropouts? I know you *can* run a tensioner, but its a hack

Cos I've got the wheels... currently sat doing nothing in the shed and a fork sat doing nothing... a Zee mech also doing nothing (that will tension the chain)... the option (original plan) is to find a used small HT frame... but at £200 this seemed less like something he'll just snap in half and better suited to jumping.

Because the original had vertical dropouts. Back in the day DJ bikes were just small hardtails essentially.

Yeah but if you're gonna fling a modern headtube on you might as well spec horizontal dropouts as well. Would make it a no brainer. Well, besides the fact there is sod all in the way of specs except tapered steerer.

I too find the lack of actual information pretty poor.

Much prefer the look of the 29er Jack flash when compared to the new Scandal, might have to keep an eye out for when they drop the price of the frame only and get one bought.

IMG-20200923-183811

Got mine today. Only pedaled around a bit on it. Box came in good condition and everything was set up as it should be except the rear tyre was deflated and forks needed pumping up a lot.

Looking forward to going for a blast on it at the weekend.

I just noticed the raw disc specific frame is £99 .
So I have a rough plan of building my son a Hardrail for going to pump track and general Street riding and for blasting around local trails.
Can anyone confirm the BB /headset hub size please ?
Will 27.5 RS 100mm fork with 27.5 front wheel and 26 inch rear work okay ?
Or will it be too "twitchy"
Thanks
