Hi,
Has anyone bought these and what are your thoughts?
https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/SHCAGMTBMB/carnac-grit-mountain-bike-shoe-midnight-blue
had a look around and can see these on Decathalon
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/mountain-biking-gravel-shoes-race-900/_/R-p-334199?mc=8649221&c=BLACK
I'm after sone gravel/mtb shoes that cost less than £100
Thanks in advance.
Can't comment in those above but I have got some DHB Doric which are comfy enough but the soles/tread are hard plastic. Fine on soft terrain but like skating on wet rocks, etc.
I've got a variation on those decathlon shoes.
Pros: Seem well made, they've been my only (non-winter) SPD's for a couple of years and still look pretty new. The boa-ish closure has survived, although it lacks the ability to adjust of a real boa, you have to release it completely and re-tension it, it won't just turn backwards to let a few clicks off.
Cons: fit is quite 'flat'. I had to cut out a bit of insole around the big toe as my toenail was pressed up against the upper. But apart from that they're fine.
I bought a set of the Carnac ones. They were OK size-wise, but the material felt quite thin/unpadded ... as I was buying them for a 400km / 18 hour ride, I wasn't confident they'd be comfy for that long. I'd have happily had them as my regular SPD for 2-4 hour rides.
I have some of the carbon soled road shoes, I use on the spin bike. For the price I paid, they do the job - but I am not too sure they are the most robust items in the world.
I know I got into a boat with the previous Planet X owner when I got into a spat about some Das Boot boots - he told me who the contract manufacturers were - but I forget now.
FLR? maybe
I've got a few Carnac bits and bobs, but I wouldn't look at them for something that sees as much stress as shoes TBH.
Nothing Shimano-flavoured in your price range? Seem to be a few discounts about at the mo.

I've had DHB's in a past and they fitted well (I've still got a knackered old pair that live with overshoes on them as wet riding/emergency spares), but I bought a pair of the 'Dorica' and found they came up a bit narrow and long, so got rid and tried some Gaerne 'G Laser' which suit my feet and budget, the 'G Trail' looks similar in terms of materials and Sole unit but has a Boa because that's what more people want, seem to be available under £100...
TBH I'd not have thought of Gaerne before and now I'm quite keen on them, I'll probably keep an eye out for some Road shoes from them for the summer...
Obviously this all comes down to fit though, I'm between an EU 44 and 45, but on the wider side so some shoes I'm fine in a 44 (UK 9.5) others a 45 (UK 10) and some are just designed for people with even weirder shaped feet. half the battle is finding out what fits...
Ta for the advice....
I'm after something that I can wear all year round potentially, either with a waterproof sock or a shoe that is relatively waterproof. I usually ride flats but have bought a winter hardtail/XC bike and wanted to try clipless again.
I'll have a look at the Shimano shoes and might just pay my LBS a visit as I've found I'm either a 9.5 or a 10.
I had a pair of 5 10 Kestrelss that I bought years ago which I would have used, but they've sat in the garage for the last 3+ years and smell a little funky. Whhich is why I was after something less that a ton just in case I use them for a season or 2.
I think off brand shoes and helmets (DHB, Carnac, Decathlon etc) - while functionally fine - do really feel quite cheap and nasty. Hunt out some Shimano, Specialized or similar on eBay or in a sale.
