Basically I think a service for £100 is abit steep.

Any recommendations based on experience etc?

Drop me a mail with what needs doing and I can quote you.
All I do is suspension and nothing else, so the workshop is specifically setup for dealing supension units with all the correct tools and best quality fluids, seals e.t.c

The forks only cost me £350. Seems daft to spend £100 servicing them.

Loco- It'd still come out around £100 when you throw in postage both ways.

Do it yourself for about £60 (seals, washers, cleaners, oils/lubricants, tools). It'll be cheaper in future because you'll have the tools and the oils left over.

I did this last Friday and overfilled the damper thus meant me having to compensate but dropping the air psi. Im sure in part it led to me flipping over the bars onto my knee!

I'm reasonably intelligent however I have zero patience.

Set up your own LBS in your living room so you don't have to travel 20yds to the nearest one, get a competent mechanic at minimum wage, then charge yourself less than the time it would take said mechanic to do the work, thus losing yourself money but hey you'd be able to have a good chat with yourself and make yourself a cup of tea and you'd lock up at the end of the night being one more satisfied customer because you run such an honest and great LBS!

Bosh!

Uuugh? Do what? Are you saying you got the forks cheap but service them will no longer make them a bargain?
Yet you expect a decent life expectancy & performance from them 2nd hand without a service?

So your saying £100 for a general service is cheap?

We aint even talking adding in bushing costs either.

Suddenly the reason becomes clear for paying qualified persons to do something for you. Not all costs can be quantified.

So your saying £100 for a general service is cheap?

(assume you post is to mine) Nope, but if when I buy 2nd hand I take into account that they might need servicing, and so the price I am willing to pay reflects this. So if push does come to shove, my bargain is still a bargain...

Madness. How people into mountain biking have a 'no fear' approach to big bills.

Would you see this mentality in the roadie world?!

Not that I buy anything else from them but the fork service has been fine and has free shipping if you can get to store (they send it to their service centre!).

Just a note the Evans rear shock 'service' is an air can service and seals only.

I fear no pelican.

Maybe if you bought new, planned to keep stuff for a while and factored £100/year running costs in it wouldn;t seem so expensive?

Like the numerous new Rockshox forks I had break on me? 🙄

You are right. Spend alittle extra time on them and sort them myself. I ended up rushing the oil refill on them as I couldn't find the funnel and ended up over-topping the night before the ride.

£100 I'd rather pay myself to do that for circa 40mins work. Plus I've got the spare wiper and seals kit already that came with the forks from the lad who only owned them for less than a month.

Use a big syringe, it more accurate, mail me and I'll send you one if you like (F.O.C of course) 😀

edit, yes and the air seal kit is £9.49 plus postage, easy job that takes 10 mins.

Loco - you refer to Evans as air can only - what do I get for my £55 off you? I've never even tried servicing any suspension so have no idea but my RP23 could do with some tlc

Yoshi:

That's a full strip, clean, inspection and rectification of any manufacturing defects. All seals in the damper are replaced and the unit has the oil and gas replaced. The air seals are also replaced as are the eyelet bushes. If spacer are needed they would be a little extra.
I don't like replacing stuff just for the sake of it, if they're going to last another 12 months then why should you have to pay for it.
Postage back is extra

My money is that hora didn't empty the damper fully, and this has put the total oil level too high. Schoolboy error.

Loco I and I know a few other lads would definately be interested in an evening class for sure all of us pretty local to you too, Aberdare/Neath/Swansea Valley/Beacons 😉

It would be a good way for you to introduce us to the benefits of fork servicing - plus I am sure you would get sure fire loyalty to a local lad 😯

Valley, you know I'm not 'local' 😯 but have been in the valleys quite a few years now and support the reds in the rugby.

Let me see when I've got a bit of time free, in the meantime if you have a few mates that are interested get numbers and mail me, should be able to do something next month sometime, so people could bring forks and beer...

yeah! second page!

Scottegg I did. The issue was I didn't have the correct impliment to inject the new oil in - had to use a large glass cooking measuring jug

Loco that would be awesome 😀

ok I'll find a motley crew and let you know, you many folk do you think would be ok 5-7???

beer and forks = bomber time 😯

as for "local" your a local trader that's all that matters plus we like supporting the "little" guys (in comparison to the "big" guys if you follow me) 😉

No problems, I reckon 8 max per visit would be ok. If you can let me know numbers and what forks people want to know about/are bringing would be good.

Update- fork servicing place rang me up and said 'do you know you had the wrong/thicker float oil in your damper leg'?

Yes, that was me the night before a ride after accidently emptying the bloody stuff out and looking for a substitute..

So hitting a square edged rock really did cause them to stiffen- chuck me over the bars 😆

Edit I'd check the details of what a 'service' includes and the costs 😉

Glass Kitchen measuring jug? Wrong oil? Incredible.

What sir requires is a measuring cylinder.

[img] [/img]

Available from all good Internets for pennies. Along with fork oil (correct grade).

If you are going to do a job, it pays to work out what you need before you're washing the Kitchen floor with suspension oil.

I even added a dab in extra and ended up dropping the psi on the trail trying to compensate for the lack of sag. Well they've seen a professional now for 75quid all in

I also used a claw hammer to stop the damper spindle from spinning when I was trying to do em. Backup.

Fancy me servicing your car peterpoddy?

LoCo,

Is it possible to get fork travel lengthened? I have Fox 120 RL, they probably could do with a service, along with my rear shock. I have heard somewhere that all it takes to get 130mm out of them simply by removing a spacer in the fork.

Is this possible? and could you do it as part of the service? 😕

Jesus that Flotec website needs someone who can design working on it. Proper headache.

And £20 extra for wiper seals?! Surely that should be in the cost of the servicing.

So £70.....

Simon Loco is £59.99 all in, and he's done a lot of kit for me, all of it performed like new when coming back.

Awesome. 🙂

Ta, Rickon.

Turtle, yes I can lengthen them if the internals allow it some 120 RLs have a spacer which when removed allows extension to 130mm, however some don't and have a shorter damper cart too.

This would be covered by the cost of a full service.

Mainly because no one else does either apart from Magura. Untapped market there chief.
Cheers anyway - let me know if you start doing them, from the kind words everyone seems to have about you i'd like to throw some biz your way.

Got my DHX Air done by Loco last week and only have good reports. Think it may have been a little porked before I sent it off but now there is no squelching and consistant damping. Followed his advise on filling the HV air sleeve with grease and the shock definately functions differently without bottoming out as easily.

Need a lot more seat time to play with the setup but it looks like I may be able to run a slightly lower main chamber pressure creating more sag but with better mid stroke control so all good. On the old setup and main chamber pressure I had to use full bottom out and full propedal but currently have no bottom out and a few click of PP at the same pressure without it blowing through and feeling slow over ground

Simon kept me well informed through out the process. Glad to see there is more competition with Loco, Flowtec etc to keep people on their toes. Have also had good service from TF in the past including advice. 😀
