I know it won't be particularly light, but as something low maintenance for doing events like Dusk til Dawn, Hit the North, etc, and riding local trails and with the kids the rest of the time would it be ok?

Anything else similar? e.g. fully rigid, pref 29er, 1x10 or SS....

Isla bike Beinn is a similar thing

10 speed

rim brakes which I think ere fine at this price point

tyres to up to 2 inch which isn't really ideal

But all in at £450

But if it was my money I'd be lurking round the classifieds or ebay for a lightly used bike with an air fork for the same price. But i seem particularly partial to suspension

Just seen that the 2014 is £380 at the moment. That seems like alot of bike for the money. So I'll say but and if you get beaten up look for a used fork

Bikes go as fast as you pedal them unless it's steep and treacherous.

Far the money you cant go wrong.

On of the fastest finishers of this years BB200 did so on one of those bikes

Yes, but to take it to the extreme, I wouldn't want to pedal 170mm travel full suss round an xc race course, would I? Really? Or I might but I doubt it would be as enjoyable as something a bit more suitable?

True. Anyway pretty much any 29er HT will be OK as a race bike unless you're a serious podium contender and a few grams matter.

The Genesis Fortitude did spring to mind but I didn't think they did them any more? And they're a magnitude of cost more than the Ramin.

A carbon fork and some nice wheels and it's plenty light enough!

As I said I'm contemplating selling mine, had one guy pull out at the last minute for no apparent reason and never got in contact again. If you're intersted, I'm open to offers
