I have the wide SKS Chromoplastics on mine, drilled a hole in the front mudguard instead of the mount, fitted fine

Was a bit of a faff to get the stays cut and shaped, but they've since been absolutely rock solid

Someone knocked my bike off the rack at work (grrrr) and the stay was bent fairly badly. Bent it back into place with some pliers and seems fine again

I have 32mm Marathon Plus tyres fitted, think I'd need to take mine off if I'm going to stick the WTB nano 40c tyres back on

To show the bends I had to put in the front stays. I still need to fettle the guard-tyre gaps front and rear to satisfy my OCD by making them perfectly consistent, but you get the idea.

Question: Has anyone fitted a fork crown mount for a Dynamo type permanent front light? Obviously we don't have the usual caliper brake mount to use, so has someone found or fashioned something that can use our guard mount under the crown?

No-one? Perhaps it's only me that wants their Arkose to live a double life. Bridleway Basher in the summer and winter road bike in the, err, winter.

Stripped and knobblied for when it's Mr Hyde, but with fat slicks, guards, rack and permanent lights for it's Dr Jekyll. Maybe even do some multi-day touring on it like that.

(or perhaps it's only me who wants permanent lights on his/her Arkose when it's wearing its sensible hat)

Just take the standard mount and flip it, (may need to bend it a little to suit the deeper crown of a carbon fork) like this -

That's great, thanks Jameso!

I tried that with B+M bracket I had but couldn't get it to fit. It was probably just too short, so wasn't going forward far enough before it bent up. Now I've see it can be done, I'll see if some bending won't do the trick or try to track down a different size one that does fit.

My std wire SON fitting won't fit, bending the black version takes the finish off as well. But others should fit, this Brompton fitting with 2 bends looks like taking the end bend out would make it the right shape.

Excellent!

That looks like it would be perfect after that bend had been taken out. Many thanks indeed 🙂

Any news on the framesets arrival dates (and prices)? Do they just come in the same colours as complete bikes?

I think I read the SS could be converted to run geared as well - is that correct? I take it the geared frames do not have quite the same capability.

Hi @jameso

I have fitted the front mudguard to my 2015 Arkose 3 purchased in September/October 2014 but thescre hole under the crown of the fork where you attach the mudguard is not parellel with the ground. It is about 35-40 degrees angle. So when you screw the mudguard into the frame the guard twists resulting in the right hand side of the guard rubbing on the tyre.

Also one of the stay mount holes seems to have a thread defect as the bolt never screws in properly so when fitting the stay for the guard it is barely fitted and would easily pop out on bump or rough ground.

Are the forks covered by warranty? How would I go about getting this resolved. If it is not covered by warranty is it possibly to purchase a replacement fork? I just looked on the Evans website and I can find Arkose 3 (2015) frames but no forks.

Appreciate your help.

Frames are in, just waiting to get posted online. SS can be used geared, just fit the hanger that the geared bikes use as the dropout itself is the same.

is not parellel with the ground. It is about 35-40 degrees angle. So when you screw the mudguard into the frame the guard twists resulting in the right hand side of the guard rubbing on the tyre.

The underside of the fork's not entirely flat and that's normal, but do you mean the hole is at 35-40 deg? The threaded hole should be roughly in line with the steerer. The blade hole sounds stripped / cross-threaded. Would be better to get it all checked in the shop.

Anyone know if the rear Joytech rear hub on the 2015 Arkose 2 can take an 11-speed road cassette?

I'm guessing not, as the 105-equipped Arkose 4 has different hubs. But you never know...

(I'm thinking of re-purposing the rear wheel, not converting the bike's 1x10 to anything else)

If you have access to a dremel style tool and a little bit of dexterity you can convert it to 11 speed yourself. I've done it to two wheels. It's just a case of taking about 1mm ish off the stops at the end of the edges that the cassette slots onto. It's not that hard

@jameso

Thanks for the reply regarding the fork.

Another question if you don't mind. Will RS505 callipers fit on the 2015 Arkose 3 frame? I have managed to acquire an RS505 full set including shifters so want to upgrade the mechanical brakes to full hydraulic.

The RS505 uses the new flat mount standard, the 2015 Arkose uses the old post mount standard. AFAIK there is no adapter for fitting flat mount calipers to post mount frames.

While I was thinking about how to build up my new Arkose SS frame I found a lot of useful information and inspiration on this thread (so if you don’t like it then it’s as much your fault as it is mine!!!). I’ve finally finished putting it all together and thought that I’d upload a couple of photos. I suppose the headlines are dynamo lights, hydraulic disc brakes, a modified 3 speed hub and lots of machined and polished aluminium. For those who may be interested I’ve written a bit more about my parts choice here www.daveypushbikes.com/blog.

Generally good stock levels at the mo but the Arkose 3 is selling fast this year, more due in a week or two I think. Some bikes get called back to go to another store when the stock is low and they have a confirmed order.

Quick question for owners. I'm looking for something to replace my 6/7 year old Boardman road bike for winter/commute use and was wondering what the Arkrose was like as a road bike with 25/28mm tyres?

Sadly I need to sell my XL Arkose Single speed. Redundancy means no longer need a commuter and its too similar to my Kinesis Tripster. Add here 🙁

I bought an arkose 4 in January as my new commuter, I really like it, disc brakes make such a difference when it's wet.

I'm running 28mm conti GP 4 seasons and PDW Full Metal guards.

It's really nicely put together and the attention to detail is spot on - things like black bolts and nicely tapped bars show it's been built with care.

It's not a speed machine but it's no slouch either. I might stick a carbon post on it though just to improve comfort a bit.

Cheers Gary.

I've also just spotted Pinnacle's Dolomite range which looks good as well and more suited to road riding. I like the idea of the Arkose as I could take it off road if I wanted but not 100% sure it'd ever actually happen! Decisions, decisions.

Sending up the bat signal to Jameso!!

I've had the letter about the new mech hanger, they want me to return the bike to Brighton, won't post me one.

Can I be posted one, I really really don't have time to fanny about in central Brighton, never mind the cost.

Yes they can send it to you, you will just need to say/sign something to say you're sure that you're able to replace a mech hanger safely, which I expect you are.

Any word on the steel frame version that Road.cc mentioned back in October? Guessing it would hit a similar price point as the Jamis renegade and Croix de for.
Did try using the search function but got nothing useful back.

There's one or two out there being ridden, it'll be a 2017 bike now so later this year sometime. It's uncool as it's 1 1/8" head tube with steel forks : )
One tourer version, one 1x11 grrrvl version.

I'm considering buying an Arkose as a comfier version of the Pinnacle Dolomite, change the tires for some 28c road wheels and use it almost exclusively as a road bike. Any Arkose owner would let me know how would you rate it as a road bike?

It is certainly well behaved on the road, mine gets used for commuting a lot and copes well with crappy roads on 28c tyres. Feels nice and relaxed for longer rides too but can't comment on serious road use as road biking is a perverse pastime and shouldn't be encouraged..... 😉

I have a 2013 dolomite and a 2015 arkose. I really wanted my next winter road bike to have disk brakes so the plan was to use the arkose but I think due to the extra weight I'll just use it for its intended purpose ie off road and perhaps get a new disk dolomite next winter.

I've got a Ride-to-Work voucher burning a hole in my pocket. Really like the looks of the Arkose 3, but the Evans site is telling me late June is the earliest they're back in stock. Can anyone tell me if there might be earlier deliveries anywhere? Would really like to test ride one too, but presumably one of the other bikes in the range will be just as good for that regarding sizing?

Its sluggish as a road bike to be honest. Club runs on it I'd have to work significantly harder to keep up whereas on the race bike, I'm up front if/as I wish. Might be that its 4lb heavier than the race bike, might be the 28mm tyres, might be the frame, or just a combination of stuff.

But that's not really the point of it, is it?

I've spent 15 years on full suspension mountain bikes. I'm also 25kg off my fighting weight. I suspect it will feel just fine to me. 🙂

Would Jameso or anyone else know what the black rubber housing inside the downtube of a Pinnacle Dolomite 2016 disc version frame might be?
Just got hold of the red frameset you see. Would something like a Jagwire cable set have been used? The Dolomites in store use some kind of polymer housing for the gear cables, would that be right?

This might be a stupid question but;
Can the stock SS wheelset take/be adjusted to take an 11 speed shimano cassette.

I've been doing the steel snobbery thing and overlooked this frame, I've got a 105 road groupset that needs a home, I'd need to swap out the hydro brakes for mechanical.

I love the paintwork on the SS model.

Alright chaps,

Question for the Arkose experts, I have a 2014 arkose 2 (the hydro disc version) I'm having a little problem with the front brake fading, any idea if I can put a 180 rotor on the fork, or will it all end in tears?

There had to be someone... 🙂 I cant stand it, I'd have an SS frame in a flash if it could be had with one of the nice bold primary colours the rest of the range comes in.

Just come across this thread and hope I get some advice.

I've got an Arkrose 2 (2014) that I want to fit a front mudguard to, but my bike doesn't have a mounting hole (not front or underneath like later years)
Some of that years models did have a front mount:
A reviewer on the Evans site posted a photo with a front guard
Road.cc review Mount holes on photos 22 & 27 here

Could I buy a fork from a later year or another make? What would I need to look for in terms of sizing?

I bought the bike for my commute that I'm generally happy with, but getting fed up with wet. I bought it together with long SKS fenders on C2W but Evans didn't tell me that the model had changed since the reviews and the front mudguard mount had been removed.

I've got a 2015 model & the mount is under the fork.

You can buy the same fork here:
https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-arkose-2015-2016-fork-EV250550

I don't think there's any problem putting the new fork on your 2014 frame (but I would ask in the evans shop first if you're unsure).

Edit: But, I'd be inclined to just buy a mudguard that doesn't need that fitting.

Nobelium, the bikes w/o a front mount that year were a small qty with a spec error that were sold at a reduced rate. If you paid full rrp you're due a credit and it could go toward a new fork but the colour may not mach, depends what spares are in stock.

Thanks for the responses.

I've put a question on the fork page if it will fit. It's for commuting, I'm not worried about the colours.
I have downtube mounted guard but they aren't great

According to my order note I paid £714.53 in July 2014 on C2W, not sure how it came to that odd number, but looks like it was discounted. I'll have a think about it and maybe order when next C2W window opens.

rockhopperbike, a bigger rotor means less leverage at the caliper area but the fork spec is 160mm max and I'm not going to say it's ok to go beyond that - I know how the fork is made but not enough about how the caliper re-location changes the stress there.

If it's fading through heat, are you using metal or resin pads? Worth trying a 160mm icetech rotor maybe, can make more difference than going up a rotor size.

Hi Jameso - Is the Dolomite 2016 disc frame-set compatible with 160 rotors? Looking to fit some Juin Tech R1 callipers on and they're 160mm only. (before I needlessly replace my 140mm centrelock rotors!)

^ 160mm is fine, you'll just need either a 140-160 for flat-mount or a flat mount to 160 PM adapter.

I have a 2014 arkose 3, has anybody else had any probs with the rear dropouts on the drive train side? I have severe wear on this side, the back wheel is no longer stable under the slightest pressure from the pedals.
Had a torturous time getting home on Tuesday night, the wheel was jumping into the seat stays. I've not been able to speak to Evans locally (phones always busy) any fixes for worn drop outs?

Just need to sort out front brake (caught the front lever as I was putting it in the car with the wheel off -idiot- so just a case of pushing pistons back in) but got everything else sorted yesterday evening. Test spin tonight then straight to work next week!

Love the black, although first upgrade is going to be some skinwall tyres 8)

Does anyone know if the Arkose 4 frameset come with the 15QR at all? I've just picked one up and it isn't in there and the guys at the shop don't seem to know if they should or not? Plus Evans don't seem to actually sell any which is odd?

😕

Frameset is with headset but not the fork axle. It's a 15mm Maxle thread so Maxle light or bolted maxle thread axle all fit.

Should be, unless RS have found a new thread pitch, standard etc .. : )
The complete bikes come with 15 x 100mm maxles and the fork's the same.

So I've ordered one of these

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/rockshox-15mm-maxle-lite/?sku=5360580147

and one of these

https://www.evanscycles.com/rockshox-15mm-maxle-lite-EV226503

and both are too long? Can you point me in the right direction please as to which one to purchase as Evans don't seem to know either. 😕

Hmm, when you mean too long- does the wheel sit in the dropouts with the skewer fitted and there's play? If so, how much?
Or are you fitting the axle without the wheel and it appears too long? Sometimes the wheel will stretch it out to the actual 100mm spacing.

On an unrelated note, whats the largest tyres I can fit with some clearance?

Maxles for a carbon road/CX fork are 125mm long in the 15x100mm size. The fork has a 10mm wide dropout on one side and 15mm on the other. Do you have one in approx 150mm for an MTB fork? Sorry, didn't register to check you'd get a road or MTB type before, seemed a given but probably not a fair assumption to make.
