@jameso - where from for the axle?

The OE axle wasn't a proprietary part, SRAM DT and others make them in that size.

I'm sure this has been covered but hey...43 pages!

What is the max clearence for a 650b wheel on an Arkose X (the older white one with a bolt through fork)

Bearing in mind the shortage of tyres at the moment, I'm looking at putting on some 2.1 27.5 mtb tyres - will these be ok

Whats the max anyone has got away with in winter where there will be mud

Resolute 650 42s are great for a mix of road and muddy trails. Just watch the slightly lower BB you'll get. You'll have no mud clearance on the average 2.1 though, esp not a tyre with a tread that works in mud.
I prefer 700 x 40-42 in the winter if I'm going off-road. Nanos or Resolutes. Better cut-through than a bigger 650 tyre, less clog and they run well on tarmac.

James i have the older Arkose from 2016 .

This one

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MXXULGS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_K34AFbXKHV835

Just seen some one on facebook sugest that they would take 2 inch tyres with 650b wheels. Looking that doesn't seem likely. Any thoughts?

The 2016 bikes had a narrower fork crown and that limits tyre size, 50mm for a 35-40mm 700c tyre. The rear is about 60mm clearance at the tyre shoulder.
The new fork we had drawn up for 2017 onwards takes 650 x 2.1 or 2.2. 2017 onwards model frames (flat mount) have a few mm more clearance but were still never intended for more than 50 to 52mm tyres in 650B with minimal tread, 2.0 Race Kings for ex. It's the road chainset compatibility that limits it.

This my 2019 Arkose X with 50mm 650b Pirelli cinturato's on i25 WTB rims. Come up as 52mm. Decent clearance.

luv2ride yes that's the new wider fork with slightly green eyes. Which kind of shows the limitations of the older one

This was the result of running 40mm tubeless Nanos on my 2015 Arkose fork, hence why I went to the 2019 X

The older bike now runs tubeless Gravel King SKs 700 x 38mm with no rub...

That is so useful to know. I have 38c gravel king 3k on mine. I wondered about whether raptors would fit. Now I know. Although I think the 1x model was sold with them

Hi, anyone had issues with the freehub on a 2019 bike? Just finished a cycle around the Hebrides and the freehub is occasionally jumping or locking. Really glad it didn't happen any earlier.
I know there were issues with earlier models. Also at 8 months old and would it be a warranty issue?

^ pop the freehub off and check the pawls and springs, it could simply be in need of a clean and/or re-grease.

Hello all. Although I'm loving my spangly new Arkose X, it's developed a creak from the bottom bracket area when pedaling - especially when standing to climb hard. It looks like the BB area is actually flexing when I stand on one crank. I am only 70kg.

Anyone else had this? Par for the course? Or terrible doom?

I've just done a gravel event thingy on my Arkose X. Solid and silent all the way round, despite some pretty relentless rough trail sections. I got no discernible flex from the BB, and I'm quite a bit heavier than you. Sounds as if you should get it checked out. Is there any play from the crankset?

Probably a pedal or BB cup that needs doing up or a fatal frame crack or anything in between.

Ha! That's the kind of expert diagnosis I was looking for.

I randomly found a thread recommending to have a look at the dropouts which I fully did and found that both were loose, the hanger was actually rattling about. Some of the wee screws had no loctite on from the look of it. May be helpful if anyone else has the same issue.

^ good tip. Axles often the cause. Will get the loctite point raised at the factory also, thanks.
I rode with a friend on a tour and his bike had an annoying creak, he couldn't seem to fix it, it went on for a few days. Rode alongside him one day and said 'er.. tighten your front QR?' - that fixed it. Was weird how it sounded like the BB area until being in a certain place as he rode.

Yeah, really odd - I'd expect that sort of amplification on a steel frame but not on an aluminium one, my ignorance there.

Like many have said, the bike is awesome, @jameso. Nicely done.

EDIT: they had loctite, but added some fresh and tightened up snug...

Does anyone here know how long the warranty is on Pinnacle frames?
Not that I'd expect to get very far dealing with Evens these days.
Looks like my Arkose (2016 frame, bought April 2017) has started to crack at the welds either side of the downtube opening at the bb where the internal cable exit.

I had this on a Novatec hub on a different bike. as you say, fixed by removing & cleaning the pawls & springs, and applying some fresh grease.

Seems like we are the only 2 here with this question! I was advised on other forums that a 10 speed chainset should work ok with 9 speed setup, although the shifting may a bit less smooth. Maybe it is worth contacting Evans or pay a visit to your local store to see if they have, or can obtain the 9 speed FSA Omega Chainset you need – the email I have had from FSA says the 10 speed version is not compatible, seems like they don’t have the 9 speed chainset available for anyone other than bike retailers/manufacturers which is ridiculous..

Thanks very much for this, nice to know someone had the same problem! I'll try contacting Evans special orders again, last time even the customer services person I ended up speaking to couldn't contact them as they were switching systems and told me to try again in a month, hopefully they might be ready now. If they don't answer though I think I'll go with the 10 speed FSA chainset so I don't need to bother changing the bottom bracket too, and hope it's OK. Feel such a pillock for breaking it in the first place, I only rode it about 5 times!

anyone got any idea where to find a replacement hanger for a 2019 thru axle Arkose? I think it's BGRD-10.... Evans being a shower of c##ts and not replying to any emails or phone calls, and they obviously don't have them on their website.... I thought Wheels Mfg might be worth a try, but they don't have one that would work. Any ideas? Anyone got a secret stash?

@jameso - I have a Pinnacle Arkose 4 from back in 2015/16 in the light blue (see Ampthill's post about 10 above this). It's got various little chips in the paintwork, and I was looking at giving it some cosmetic tlc (to go along with the other tlc which it needs after over 10k miles!).

Is there a colour chart and/or a colour reference for that blue? or failing that, do Evans do a touch-up paint for their Pinnacle colours?

BGRD10-TA for the thru axle version. None on the site which suggests out of stock at the warehouse but there may be stock in stores - that's where it gets frustrating for all though as finding one is a case of calling a few. I've asked..

@sheeps - it's a colour match to a TA Taiwan colour so no paint codes exactly - it's close to Pantone Process Blue though, a little less saturated. Pantone 2193 or 94?

Roughly is fine - I'm sure all the other riders zooming passed me at speeds I dream of won't notice the slight difference in touch ups where I've 'used' the bike!! 🙂

Now just the small matter of finding a source of Pantone 2193!

I'm trying to get a replacement hanger for my Arkose (it's the BGRD-8 one ) and it looks like Evans doesn't have any in stock. This looks like the equivalent but don't suppose anyone can confirm that:

Hi all,
I would appreciate a bit of help with my 2019 Arkose X. For the winter I am intending to use the bike mainly on the road. Before buying some (narrower) road suitable 650b tyres I thought I would give the wheels from my 2019 Diverge a try. Unfortunately when I put the Arkose cassette on the DT wheels from the Diverge I have a spacing issue (the smallest cog rubs the inside of the frame). Does anyone know how I can get around this? Both appear to be 142mm axle length and both cassettes (11 speed Shimano on the Diverge and 11 speed SRAM on the Arkose) have spacers behind the cassettes. Is it a matter of simply removing the cassette spacer when I fit the DT wheel? Thanks in advance.

11 speed cassette doesn't normally need a spacer - if its a 1.85mm cassette spacer its usually to convert an 11 speed freehub to a 10 speed cassette.

@Winston - thanks for your advice. The spacers both appear to be 1.25mm approx rather than 1.85mm. However, I removed the spacer and the issue appears to be resolved. Who knows why the spacer was actually fitted but all good now. Cheers.

Hi all,

I've tried to skim through all pages of this thread and have managed to find a few useful comments on the bike sizing for a height of 5'7 (just a tad over 5'7 with 30inch leg inseam).

Just to be sure, for whoever is the same height as me? Did you opt for Small or Medium?

Just looking for a few more comments before I commit.

Much appreciated

Considering selling the roadie and buying a wheel to go on the back of the Arkose (D3) for trainer duties.

Assuming I buy a standard road wheel with the right shimano cassette, I shouldn’t run into any issues should I?

Anyone done the same?

Hi flipsonic

I'm about 5'8, but I'm never sure how to measure my inseam - pretty average I'd guess.

I've had my Arkose for coming up to two years now, and I'm happy with it. It was a hard choice between small and medium as either would have worked. I chose small because it felt a bit more agile, saved a couple of ounces, and coming from a mtb the standover height seemed quite high even on the small.
I've not regretted it: Once or twice on long rides I've wished I could stretch a little, and when I put mud-guards on in the winter I've banged my toes a couple of times till I've got used to it ... that's it. The rest of the time it's felt right.

After a few months I slightly changed the handlebar angle, tilting them down a bit, and I altered the brake levers to the 'small reach' setting which I found much more useable, especially when riding in the hooks. This is a bit odd as I have quite large hands, but it definitely works better for me. I guess you'll have to make similar adjustments to get it right for yourself, which you'll only be able to do after you've ridden for a while.

I think I made the right choice, though I also reckon I could have made the medium work.

It's a great bike. I don't think you'll find better value (I got mine in the sales for 950).

Let us know what you decide.

After doing a lot more biking recently, getting a new road bike and a fit, I've come to the conclusion that my Arkose is too big for me (large)

I have tried to find a medium but Evans have basically nothing. Does anyone know if they will ever get Arkose models back in?

@jameso thank you for the info

@mikertroid thank you but I’m going to smash the cycle to work to get a new one. I’m also going to go 2x for better road cadence.

With no Arkose on the horizon I think I’m going to go for a Trek Checkpoint ALR5 which seems pretty similar.

It’s a shame as I put it the Arkose into gravel trim and had a great ride at the weekend, but it’s just too big 🙁

Sorry to hear this although think they have been going downhill since Sports Direct took them over. Maybe you're leaving a sinking ship. Their website got worse too, cannot get previous arkose models info. Thanks for all your input on here. You helped many people. Hope we see more bikes that you have had input on, who-ever and wherever that might be!

I'm after some more bar tape for my Arkose 1 (2018) Model as it is rather chewed up now.

Can't seem to find the original 'Pinnacle Shockproof with gel'.

Can anyone recommend a similar replacement?

It's Velo bar tape, they supply so many brands and make a lot of the aftermarket tapes out there so you should be able to get something similar. Arkose spec used the thicker gel base and in last couple of years the anti-slip surface material.

Don't suppose anyone can trace the original rear hub spec from the Evans site for the 2015 Arkose 2?

I've found 'Alex ATD-490 32H rims, Joytech hubs'

I'm using mine on my turbo at the moment and I'm noticing my old Specialised hard rock (my partner is using) seems a much tighter fit on the turbo. Trying not to have to adjust/faff too much when changing bikes.

I get the feeling the Arkose may be 130mm rather than 135mm (hence it 'compresses' less in the turbo frame). Or am I overcomplicating a simple tape measure job?

Thanks all. I’d bought a spare wheel set years ago (funnily enough my post in this thread came up on a Google search) and as that came with MTB tyres that I had to ditch, it’d make sense that it’s 135

Might start a separate thread regards the turbo then, got a third bike (hard tail) coming soon, so will see how that fits into the turbo frame first.

I'm thinking of swapping the fork on my Arkose 2016 to one with more clearance.

Probably this one https://www.kinesisbikes.co.uk/Catalogue/Forks/Adventure/TRIPSTER-DISC-TA

The aim being to be able to run bigger tyres. So am I thinking that I would be able to run up to 50mm on 650b and 45mm 700c?

Is 50mm 650b a big step up in "suspension"? I'm currently running 40mm 700c?

This has been prompted by a mate suggesting we try Oxduro this year (but with the reality we might have to cut our losses and head for home or cut a corner). Too far on the road for an MTB but enough off road to want a bike that is happy on Chilterns single track and the Ridgeway etc.

Any thoughts appreciated

I'm running Hope five20 and have end caps so no problem there. I think I'd have to but a new front brake which is no problem

Wondering if anyone here has bought a 2021 Arkose? The Arkose 3 is no longer on their site..

Their website descriptions of their bikes are very minimal

For example the frame description is 'Lightweight and Durable Heat Treated Aluminium' &'6061 heat treated Aluminium'

Is the frame the same quality/specification as the 2020 model ?

2020 Arkose Frame description:
'6013-T6 heat treated alloy, w/Triple butted top and down tubes. 3 x bottle cage mounts, internal cable routing, interchangeable dropout & rack/mudguard mounts'
Also, the website says  'For 2021 we’ve simplified the line-up, updated the geometry and made it unisex to make it easier for you to find the right Arkose for you'

There is no Geometry guide on the website either, having a 2018 Arkose it would be good to compare before purchase.

It's basically the same frame as 2020 with the seat stay bridge added back in, sizing changed a bit but the M-L-XL are pretty much the same adding XS and S to cover the womens bikes. Can't help on geometry sorry - the same as before on the main dimensions, handling etc but I don't have the charts now.

Thanks James 👍👍 I'll probably order one to collect in store (Leeds Central) once in stock, and check it there, although have emailed them to ask if they can provide the Geometry. Sounds like it will be similar which is important as struggling to find Gravel bikes with threaded BB, Mudguard mounts, stack/reach, tallish headtube like the Arkose I Have (2018 model 1)
I like the 3 as prefer the higher end gearing for flat roads.
