Purely by chance last week I found myself in Evans in Glasgow city centre- a pal was picking up a bike from its service.

Looking around, my eye fell on an Arkose- it was the cream-coloured frame so I think was an X. May have been a remaining 2019 one. I was impressed. Its light for what it is.

And then I got chatting to a chap who was bringing one in for service, and he raved about it.

Now I'm a little confused.

So firstly I need to get this, presumably this goes on the steerer. Where then does the crown race fit?

That's right, the Hope thing goes on the steerer, then the crown race from a tapered headset goes on top of the Hope thing.

I've done that before to run rigid straight steerer forks on an mtb with a tapered headtube.

Problem with the Arkose, at least with my one, is that there's no crown race. The headset is just a bearing that sits between the frame and forks themselves.

Yes, current Arkose forks have an integrated crown race. The headset is an FSA C40 ACB, with *I think, should say on the bearing* a 45 degree bearing seat. So many crown races for a 1.5 inch integrated bearing with a 45 deg seat or bearing angle would work.

So maybe I should take this time to also replace the bearings too from something from Hope that aught to do the trick.
What are the measurements on the headtube to know which to get, or better yet, can you recommend a new headset to fit the Arkose with a 1 1/8 straight fork?

Ah, OK, got it. Looks like it's an FSA Crown Race H6083. It's actually for a 36 deg bearing

NO.42/ACB-A - ORBIT C-40-ACB SB BLACK 1 1/8""-1.5 W/ H2166B 15mm,
H0415S0000E401

^ from the Arkose BOM. Confusingly what I know as the C-40 ACB they also call the no42 in the parts book. It is a 36 degree bearing angle on the crown race, 45 degree on the frame seats.

Hi James,

My 2018 Arkose 4 needs some new rear bearings for its Novatec hub...

Would you know the ones I need? I can always dismantle if not, I'm a) being lazy and b) want a couple more rides before I dismantle!

Thanks!

M

Does anyone know if the new fork:

Pinnacle Arkose MY19 fork

Will fit a 2018 Arkose? Specs look the same except the dynamo routing which would be useful for me. I know they have another fork that's stayed as compatible for 2017 models onwards for the same price, minus the dynamo hub routing.

Fork will fit, yes.
Mike, bearings, will look up the hub spec asap, need access to folder to check which one.

My 2013 Arkose 2 got nicked last week. 🙁 14,000 happy commuting, on road, and off road kilometers gone just like that.

So I could do with a new commuter that C2W friendly. I like the look of the Arkose A8 as hub gears and hydro discs should in theory be pretty maintenance free. Has anyone got one and can comment on the longevity / service interval of the hub as the review online is a bit off putting, but I'm conscious that's only one data point.

I've got an Alfine 8 on my 2009 Genesis iOiD (my son is riding it now-I'd love a 29" version....) and it's been faultless. Just sensitive to cable stretch that's all.

Just missed out on an ex-demo Arkose X 2020 from Evans today - still showing in stock at Gatwick warehouse but guy in customer services advised had alread sold 🙁 Spotted it last night but was put off by fact it only came with 1 year frame and fork warranty, and only 3 month for the components. Decided to sleep on it but busy at work so didn't get chance to order it until I got home (too late!)

Can anyone tell me what the warranty on a new Arkose would be? Couldnt seem to find a site for Pinnacle any longer, and the Evans site didn't seem to say. Old web posts suggests 5 years frame and forks, or even lifetime frame and forks for original owner?

I’ve just had a quick look at the handbook I got with my Arkose. The frame has a ‘limited lifetime warranty’, eg no crashes, not to be used for jumps, etc.
The rest of the bike seems to have a standard warranty from Evans, that usually means that within the first year its their responsibility to prove why they shouldn’t repair or exchange, after that it’s your responsibility to prove why they should (briefly). Some of the parts have the manufacturers guarantee, which may be better.

If you need more info I’ll take a longer look when I get back from my ride.

Thanks easily, much appreciated. I might pop over to the Cheltenham store tomorrow to test ride a "new" one they have in stock, and hopefully they can give me the full gen on warranty then. The ex demo was a good £300 off rrp, and the stock bikes haven't had a sniff of a sale price since release so I was gutted I missed it. That said, trading a limited lifetime frame & fork warranty for just 12 months warranty (and only 3 mths for components) is a big step down...

Yeah, not in a massive rush as my older Arkose SS conversion is more than holding its own, so could wait til Xmas. Interesting though that the Arkose X wasn't amongst the 2020 Pinacles offered with 15% off at Evans a week or so back (was only specific models), so i wasnt holding out much hope it would come down in price over Christmas but you never know. Still stuck between the Arkose X and the Space Chicken, decision may rest on which comes up on offer 1st.

🙂 I bought the Arkose because I couldn't afford the Tempest Force 1 ... maybe in a couple of years.
I'm really happy with the Arkose. I kind of wish I'd gone for 1x11 rather than 2x11, but it's a great bike: quick for commuting, fun on the bumpy paths, and terrifying (in a good way) when doing offroad descents.
One good thing about choosing an Arkose is that jameso is here so often. It's really helpful having someone who knows the bikes better than anyone who gives his time so readily. Thanks jameso.
Anyway, you're looking at two good bikes there - I think you'll be happy with whichever you choose.

Ended up in Evans' Bristol branch this morning to pick up a click and collect order, and on my way out saw a Arkose X in large (am sure it didnt show up as in stock when I checked yesterday). Bloody lovely looking thing, the cream finish looks way nicer in the flesh and the tyre clearance looked vast to me with 47mm 650b Byways. Pretty light as well, though the medium I'd need would be slightly lighter 😉 The ultra-flared bars are something else too....not sure I'll be able to wait until to Xmas/ January sales now

5 years is probably lifetime if you read the small print on an alu frame if pinnacle is similar to most manufacturers

Right. Unexpected finance committee sign off on a new bike found me in Evans today, looking at the D3 and the X.

Whichever I choose is to replace a Scott CR1, which is fast but obviously purely road focussed. The aim is the usual one - i.e. to make off road bits that would be dull on the FS interesting, and link them with road sections. Mix would be 50/50, perhpas a bias to the off road side. All this happening in the Surrey Hills and South Downs.

So which one do I want? I like the lighter weight of the X, the simplicity of the 1x drivetrain and the comfort of the flared bars, but am I limiting myself too much on the road with the smaller wheels?

Thoughts, comments and experience welcome please!

Well weirdly that one last night disappeared from Ebay, but isn't showing as sold but ended, so i guess they have somewhere else they sell things from.

But anyway, this one according to the Pinnacle blurb is more my size anyhow
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/113878053972

Just waiting for the seller to come back to me and will potentially buy it for turbo duties. Depends if he's able to box it up if i sort all that as it's ball-ache of a drive i don't greatly fancy making.

There are some Arkose LTD frameset at sale.
They are stated to be DI2 only but does anyone know if there is a way to get a mechanical groupset on the frame? Perhaps through widening the cable port a bit with a drill?

And what's the tire clearance with 27.5 tires on this generation of Arkoses? Will these fit something like a Race King 2.2, Ikon 2.2 or similar?

I'm looking to ditch the knobbies on my old Arkose and repurposing it as a winter road bike.

What are my chances of getting a D2 spec on a D1 or D3 coloured frame... with a long steerer.. and on bike to work?

I've been considering the womens spec d2 as the black is just a bit bland for me.

Sorry, missed a few posts here, been away all of Sept so far.

Ramin 3+ / SS rigid - no current plans for a return sorry. It was a nice bike but always a fringe model and it's getting harder to get bikes like that into buy plan of a bigger company. Though there has been a lot of interest in Arkose bikepacking set ups in store and I keep saying that the Ramin 3+ was the best 'packer we made.. so maybe. If we can, we would.

Thanks though festivebonce, keep a few good people (plus me!) busy and paying bills : )

Arkose framesets - all diverted to full bike orders this year sorry, we couldn't keep the bikes in stock that long. Demand higher than forecasts. Maybe summer 2020.

suggests 5 years frame and forks, or even lifetime frame and forks

5 years is probably lifetime if you read the small print on an alu frame if pinnacle is similar to most manufacturers

Yes, 'lifetime' means warrantied against any flaws in manufacture for the realistic life of an Al frame that will fatigue to failure naturally eventually, as they all will. Thing is that timeframe and use is not something we can define or measure, no-one can, so it basically means we'll look after you if you've not abused it, haven't neglected something, have had it serviced resonably along the way and aren't trying to fob off the shop guys with a JRA that was really an RTA, etc.

I like the lighter weight of the X, the simplicity of the 1x drivetrain and the comfort of the flared bars, but am I limiting myself too much on the road with the smaller wheels?

The 1x drivetrain is more limiting at speed on the road IME than the tyres - feels gappy and harder to hold a pace if riding with others. But no real problem, the range is good and I'm not too worried about keeping an ideal cadence anyway. I do 100 milers on an Arkose X happily and I doubt my time would be more than a few mins different/quicker if I rode the D series with a 38-45mm tyre. Pop a 32mm road tyre on a D series and it's a better road bike though, marginally. I really like the flared bars, both widths - the narrower ones are a great all-road compromise and no hindrance at speed on road, the wide ones are my choice for long rides, anything over a full day or 2.

There are some Arkose LTD frameset at sale.

Clearance is ~52mm tyre max but if you're prepared to go to under ISO tyre to frame clearances some 2.2 XC / minimal tread tyres will fit. The Arkose has about as much space F and R as any bike with that chainset spec short of the carbon drop-stay bikes, but they tend to be shorter in the rear anyway. It's got generous clearances.

What are my chances of getting a D2 spec on a D1 or D3 coloured frame… with a long steerer.. and on bike to work?

Low, to be honest. Stock bikes are as they are and the only way to do it would be beer/biscuit bribery of your local store manager maybe, it'd be for them to balance up and sell the non-std spec bike created by the swap over - something else that a bigger company can struggle with. You may get a fair price for a from-new spec swap though, worth asking.

I am very close to placing an order for the 2020 D1 Arkose but keep looking at this Genesis. What do people think I should go for? I love the look of the Genesis but think the Arkose would be maybe a bit lighter with what looks like a better wheelset. Any opinions very much appreciated as well as some photos of your Arkoses.

I’ve an option on a 2017(?) arkose 1 small frame bike (blue with blue lettering)
Looking for something I can upgrade as I go.
All my other bikes are small sized either 51/52 road and cross but sizes seem to be in the region of the small arkose which is a 49(?)
I’m just shy of 5’8” and have a 30” inseam.
Any real world advice on sizing welcome.
Also thicky question if I wanted to run 650b is it easy enough to find wheels that suit this model?
Thanks

Think these wheels would be ok: https://www.huntbikewheels.com/products/hunt-650b-adventure-sport-disc-27-5-gravel-road-trail-wheelset-1579g-24deep-25wide?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjw84XtBRDWARIsAAU1aM0ToxxANx6jfcLDrlQrMZwlF_J9Ns3b0H4UzMvN8vOZjkXBkBVYE9kaAvWlEALw_wcB
Probably weight saving over stock. Think PX are also rolling out FSA 650b Aftrburners for less than £200 a pair, and think you can get adaptors for 9mm QR, or through axles standards, but you'd need to check before buying. Adaptors definately available from Hunt if not already in the box...

I'm pretty much the same size as you and I ride a small Arkose, I reckon you'll be ok.

Occasionally I've brushed a toe on the tyre as I've cornered, but it's only happened once or twice - even with mudguards on - and that's the only problem I've had.

Took the plunge and picked it up seemed to fit ok but time and miles will tell, it was worth a punt for the money. I’ve picked up some unused 40 WTB Nanos that i’ll be fitting for now.

Follow up question though. Using the original 9 speed sora rear mech what’s the biggest cassette I can and go too?

Looking for a new gravel bike and I must say arkose d1 is one of the best looking bikes I've seen in a while, the paint job is stunning. And I say this as a man who has bikes costing thousands of pounds more.

Spec ain't great but that's not an issue for the purposes I intend it. One question I do have. The riddler tyres, are they the tubeless variety? The non oem models all have tcs written on them, whilst the ones on the bike didn't.

As for question above re the sora rear mech, largest officially on the gs model is 34, but as shimano tend to be a bit conservative I suspect you could get a 36 in there. If I buy One I'll be converting it to a 1x9 with a 36 cassette. Anyone know how rattly a shimano shifter will be without a gear cable attached?

I have a 2018 Arkose X. The rear hub was changed by Evans at the 6 week service from a cone and cup to a cartridge hub (Novatec D482TSBT) because they had found a fault with it.

The front hub is now getting rough (doesn't improve after servicing) and I would like to change it to a cartridge type hub, with a similar spec to the Novatec D482TSBT on the rear. Any recommendations? Should I just get a new wheel or swap the hub? I'm happy with rims on the bike and I'd prefer the wheels to match. How much would it cost to build up a wheel?

I see Evans sell a Pinnacle Adventure Road Disc Wheelset (EV324477) for £250. These wheels have Novatec D791SB (front) and D792SB (rear) hubs which I understand were fitted on the Arkose 4 (2018) bikes. I wonder why the Evans store put a D482TSBT hub on my Arkose X rather than the D792SB?

I have an Arkose D2 that is 4 months old. It has developed an annoying click from BB, and a creak from the rear hub/cassette when climbing out of saddle in biggest sprocket.

Is the clicking BB a sign that the bearings are failing? There isn't any play, but it doesn't seem right.

Anybody else had issues with the FSA BB?

I guess I could take it back to the shop but it might be hard to replicate in the stand

It has developed an annoying click from BB

check the pedal threads, it could be something as simple as the threads being dry and needing a coating of anti seize. but yes, FSA doesn't have a good reputation of the seals on their bearings on any component

I've got a 2017 Neon, which I think is pretty similar to the Arkose of that year.

Do 40mm tyres fit OK for you guys? Planning a long gravel ride next year & need the extra cush/grip.

I can barely recall doing it, so it wasn't hard.... it was the front hub, so it was a case of gently drifting the bearings out from the opposite side and replacing with the new bearings. Less than 10 minutes IIRC.

After some help.
I've got a 2017 Arkose with Novatec D482TSBT hubs.
I can't find a service guide or tutorial for this hub and need to replace the bearings.
Anyone able to send me a link?
This hub does not seem to be listed on the Novatec website.
I have checked it's the correct code.

Come on you excitable Arkose owners, someone must know something?
I've exchanged emails with Novatec and no tutorials or help with process to change bearings on this hub.
For info it's the hub with nuts that screw on either end of the spindle not Allen keys in the spindle.
I can remove the non drive nuts and bearing seal but do not know what to do next e.g. bash the spindle thru (unlikely with the freehub still attacked) remove the freehub (does it just pull off like a Hope hub). Do i remove driveside nuts by clamping spindle on non driveside?

Help would be appreciated.

Hi Karlp. I think I know now why Evans put the Novatec D482TSBT hub on my Arkose X (2018) -they had one spare from the 2017 bikes.... I can't tell you how to change the cartridge bearings sorry - I would get my lbs to do that. Would you mind telling me which hub is on the front wheel of your 2017 Arkose please and is it a thru axle? I eventually want to change mine to a cartridge type hub. Cheers si

I have a 2018 Arkose X. The rear hub was changed by Evans at the 6 week service from a cone and cup to a cartridge hub (Novatec D482TSBT) because they had found a fault with it.

The front hub is now getting rough (doesn’t improve after servicing) and I would like to change it to a cartridge type hub, with a similar spec to the Novatec D482TSBT on the rear. Any recommendations? Should I just get a new wheel or swap the hub? I’m happy with rims on the bike and I’d prefer the wheels to match.

WildSI my font hub is a Novatec D791SB which is bolt thru.
I'm taking rear to Evans today in the hope one of the mechanics might enlighten me on how to remove freehub etc.
I'm happy to pay them to do it but I want to be able to do it myself too.

@Karlp, @Wildsi, D482TSBT - I think - and I've not pulled one apart myself, and tbh though the hubs are good we're speccing less Novatec in future simply because the service info from them isn't clear between myriad variants/can be hard to get hold of/etc - I think it's the same process as this, this video just shows the non-disc version

Jameso, it's not same as that video.
Understood your point re Novatech as the info I got from them was misleading.
However I chatted to an Evans mechanic and below is how I did it for the d482tsbt rear hub.

1. Remove cassette.
2. Remove both sets of endcaps (keep in order or take photos etc.). This needs spanners not allen keys. For me the non driveside came off easy and I needed to clamp in order to remove driveside.
3. With the freehub in place bash the axle thru from the non driveside. This removes the driveside bearing.
4. Remove the driveside bearing from the axle.
5. Spin the axle round and then use it to remove the non driveside bearing I.e. insert thru hub and give it a bash.
6. Press the new driveside bearing into place.
7. Insert the axle and press the new non driveside bearing into place.
8. Replace the endcaps and the casette.

Caveat the above should be correct but drafted after the fact not done from notes made at the time!

Hi, after some info really, currently riding a 2016 revolt and have been looking to upgrade for a while. The Arkose X that is currently being offered by Evans at just over £1000 has caught my eye at such a good discount.
However unsure about the 650b wheels on a drop bar ride . My mtb is 650b my revolt is 700c is there anything noticeable with the dirlfferent wheel size. I quite like the idea that you can interchange to 700c if you require. Also my revolt is 3 x 9 how does a 1 x 11 compare when commuting etc etc. Thank you for your time.

Thanks karlp and jameso. I'll probably just change the front hub to the Novatec D791SB. SPACYCLES are selling one for £30 ( https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s117p3850/NOVATEC-D791SB-Front-Hub). Would this be the correct one for the Arkose X 2018? Which hubs will be specced in the future if you are moving away from Novatec?

townydc My 2018 Arkose X has 1X10 Deore gearing and it is spot on for commuting. The 1X11 will be wider still.

it’s not same as that video

Darn, sorry. And there's my frustration, code number is generally the hub tech/type. But here it's quite different. I need to go on the Novatec intensive product info and code logic course, clearly. If there is one : )

I’ll probably just change the front hub to the Novatec D791SB. SPACYCLES are selling one for £30 ( https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s117p3850/NOVATEC-D791SB-Front-Hub). Would this be the correct one for the Arkose X 2018?

It talks about conversion to 15mm, but the Arkose fork 2018>current is 12mm. We mosly use hubs from KT, Novatec and Shimano. Used to use some from Chosen. Future spec will be based more on service info and spares commonality for easier stocking at our end, I want this to be easier for everyone. I'd like to use more Shimano but the cup and cone spec is a negative for some, plus they don't cover all the options as well as the more extensive (but occasionally random or scattergun) OE suppliers in Taiwan.

Do you think the Arkose D3 will be discounted anytime soon?

Tempted to order now but knowing my luck it will be reduced in price soon after i place my order.

^ if not discounted for BF I doubt it. Not a plan I've heard discussed either. They're selling through quickly and orders are placed into spring now so I expect there's no reason to discount only to be out of stock for a while due to a higher rate of sale. So, no - but they have refunded the difference in the past when what you're concerned about has happened.

Thanks Jameso. Its not straight forward is it! Have you experience of Hope hubs. Spa cycles are have this one for £65 ( https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s117p4078/HOPE-Pro-4-Front-Hub). Would it be suitable for the Arkose X (2018) front wheel?

Thanks Jameso. At full price it is probably still the bike I like best so will probably go for it.

The 12mm option will, yes. If it can be adapted to a 100x12mm spec, it'll fit your Arkose fork which is 100x12mm. The thru-axle you have will work with a new hub of that standard.
