Can anyone with a newer arkose post some pics of the down tube entry ports for the internal cable routing?
Thanks!

Does the newer one have a thru axle for the rear wheel?

No, just the front.Does the newer one have a thru axle for the rear wheel?

Probably not as a red fork on it's own isn't worth a lot as a resale but if the frame's not built up, pop it back in the box and swap it for the Arkose 4 frame that has the full carbon fork. It's about 450g vs 700ish iirc for the Al steerer version.Do you think there is any chance evans would swap just the fork for me. maybe for some sur charge?
Having actually done a bit of reading now, this sounds a bit unlikely.
Anyone have 30/32mm road tyres and guards? You mind sharing a photo?
Don't fancy massive/wide guards as will be 70% road duties and unsure how well narrow guards would fit in the mahoosive forks.
Very tempted by the 2017 4.
Sandwicheater, I've emailed you a picture. 🙂
Thanks johnnystorm, reckon I'll got for it. Cheers
Is James Olsen still hanging around this thread? If so- strange question for you. Having an recurring issue with fitting the rear wheel of my 2017 Arkose 2. Its really hard to fully seat into the dropouts- I have to remove the skewer, rest the wheel on the dropouts and physically pull them apart for the wheel to drop in. Entirely possibly I'm being incompetent and doing something wrong but I've never had this problem across a dozen other bikes yet it happens every time I remove the rear wheel of the Arkose. Have you ever come across this before?
Cheers
Does anyone know the weight of the 2016 arkose 4 frame or frameset. I looked on evans website but there is conflicting information. Thanks
XL frame, headset, seat clamp 1730 gms. XL forks with maxle 510 gms (kitchen scales....)
Finally cracked and bought one of the new arkose 4’s...took it for its first decent ride yesterday, absolutely love it. Turns out disc brakes and wider tyres can make riding awful roads in the pissing rain quite fun. Might get a 44 or 46t chainring for the front...then I just need to get it set up tubeless!
Question for any 2017/2018 owners - what mudguards are good on these frames with wide tyres? Running the stock riddlers atm but have ordered some 40c g one speeds so looking for something that’ll cover those.
Oh and props to my local Evans for giving me BC discount. First time using evans and I was a bit nervous straying away from LBS but so far so good...
Hi, I have just signed up to this forum so that I could do to this post.
I have just bought a Pinnacle Arkose 2 frameset, 2016. So far liking the look of it, having just built it up the other day. Not ridden it yet though. I am not sure if a crown race needs to be fittted to the forks though, as there appears to be a visible gap between the forks and the frame. Can anyone look at their arkose and advise? None of my other road bikes have such a visible gap.
thanks, Paul
Does the fork look like it has a built in bearing seat at the right angle??
I think if you put a crown race on that wasn't meant to be there, then the gap would be much bigger than what your photo shows, it just wouldn't sit on the crown of the fork.
From what I remember, my 2014 version with carbon steerer had a crown race
Missed a few here recently -
@pclayto - They all use a crown race yes, looks normal, there's usually around 2mm gap there. What headset did you use? Might be worth checking the race is seated evenly all the way down but it looks fine from the photo.
@rdmp2 - Yep, just hadn't seen the thread bumped up in recent weeks sorry. Sounds like it's worth checking the dropout spacing or alignment, the shop can do that for you. If it's out, sorry for the faff but we can get it sorted for you, the guys at the shop will advise.
Thanks for the response, James. I will drop the forks out later and have a look. I didn't inspect it too much, I used the headset bearing that came with the frameset from Evans cycles.
I took the bike out for a quick 300 yard test, and it all seemed fine. I'm impressed, and loving the colour.
For info, I went with the XL, and I am 188cm (6ft2).
Thanks James, will do.
FWIW your willingness to contribute to this thread was a major factor in buying my Arkose!
I’m going to buy an Arkose in cycle to work but I am torn between the 3 and 4
i prefer the luminous colour of the 4 for visibility and less likely to get stolen.
How does the SRAM groupset stacknup against 105? I’m used to ultegra so makes me a bit nervous.
Any other differences between the two?
What is it about the Arkose frame that makes it suitable for 650b wheels? The BB drop at 76mm is 6mm lower than similar bikes such as the Planet X offerings, which I thought would make pedal strikes more likely?
What is it about the Arkose frame that makes it suitable for 650b wheels?
Nothing more than any other frame with the clearance, tbh. The layout and geo suits a more capable tyre but the Pyrolite is also a great bike on 650B and that's a more road-going geometry.
BB drop - 70mm BB drop is common spec for a road race bike on 700 x 23mm tyres with an OD of about 670mm. A 700 x 32 or 650B x 47 will be ~685mm. The Arkose increases BB drop to keep the BB at about the same height while the wheel gets a bit bigger.
Assumption is that we need higher BBs for off-road use, but enough clearance for quite rooty singletrack would compromise road and gravel cornering and general handling for a drop bar bike imo. Road race spec or ISO lean angle regulations also assume pedalling round corners - who does that outside a crit race? On a CX race course the off-cambers might justify a 5-8mm BB raise over road bike spec but ime a low-ish BB is a benefit more of the time. And it's only ~6mm lower - not a big difference.
Hopefully a really quick question:
Will I get a set of G-One Tubeless tyres to seat OK on my Alex ATD-490 32H rims on my 2015 Arkose 4 (I've got an Airshot)?
I'm still running the 35c Small Block 8's it comes with as standard (on my second or third set) - could I squeeze a set of 38c G-ones in the frame?
Thanks
My Pinnacle Arkose 2 2016 on its maiden voyage. Handlebars still need adjusting....
My 2015 arkose 3 wheels which are alex but not sure of the model are running tubless.
But I use stans rim strip rather than tape and the join on the rim seemed to leak initially so probably not officially tubless ready.
Jameso,
Is there any plans to extend the Pyrolite range (only sora model on thr website) or alternately ship Arkose with 650b wheels?
Also what happened to the steel version?
Neil
Is there any plans to extend the Pyrolite range
Not yet, possibly next year - we're just seeing what the reaction is. Arkose with 650B, probably for MY19, not all but some.
Steel version - will arrive under a different name as basically the 'Arkose Touring' - a triple, guards and a rack, steel fork.
I have an Arkose 2 2016 model. I'm looking to see how I could improve it rather than buying a new bike. Having read loads online it appears that new wheels are a good upgrade. Any ideas?

After getting lots of help in another forum I decided to buy a set of wheels. I chose HUNT 4Season Gravel Disc with fitted tubeless Schwalbe G One AllRound tyres.
McNultycop:
I've run 40c nanos in my Arkose on Alpkit Orbit wheels without too much bother (some paint has rubbed off when it was really muddy, not tyre rub.)
On the stock wheels I've run gravel kings tubeless with tesa tape, no issues whatsoever.
I have G Ones on mine and they have been brilliant, so much fun on them in the snow this week 🙂
Cheers Johnnystorm.
What size do you have teadrinker?
I've been considering an Arkose 3 to replace my Planet X London Road but the difference in Stack height has put me off. My small London Road has a stack of 532mm compared to the 570.5mm of the small Arkose. I've just had a look at small Arkose in my local Evans and it was next to a size 50.5cm Norco Search A which has a stack of 529mm. Looking at the 2 bikes side by side there didn't appear to be 41mm difference between the top of the head tubes (even taking into account the different BB drops and tyre sizes).
Does anyone (maybe Jameso) know if the stack height is measured differently or exaggerated on the Arkose compared to other brands?
Cheers
Staff
Anyone have a medium arkose frameset that they want to move on?
currently you can pick up a 2016 frame for £230, but not sure i can justify another new frame - but if anyone has one they're done with then i could be tempted to try one out.
cheers
Does anyone (maybe Jameso) know if the stack height is measured differently or exaggerated on the Arkose compared to other brands?
It's not that high imo - I'd say many brands' all-road bikes are too low, too road-biased for off-road or longer-ride use.
The Arkose has a slightly longer fork than some, plus a lower BB - that's 10-12mm of stack. But it's not a road race bike where you spend time cruising in the bunch on the hoods or at full pelt mainly on the drops over an hour or 2 max. It's a type of bike where you brake better from the drops and you ideally need to be able to use the drops 50% of the time, to ride all day or have off-road security. If the stack is too high it may be the wrong bike for you, or you might benefit from adapting to higher stack for the use the bike is good for. All in all, I see a lot of this bike type with flipped up stems, bars rotated up and a few spacers, but rarely slammed.
Looking forward to seeing the steel tourer, sounds spot on.
What colour did you go for?
Hi James (O),
I have been using my Arkose X on road recently (I now have three sets of wheels for it - originals with Nano 40Cs, 650b with WTB Byways and some Mavic Aksiums from my new road bike) and occasionally run out of top end gears.
I'm thinking a new chainring (40 or 42T) will probably do, without losing too much at the other end (11-36 cassettes all round).
What is the BCD of the chainring used on the X?
Thanks.
Ben
RS, it'll be gloss black. Small copper details. Not called Arkose though : )
Hi Ben, it's a 5 arm road, 110 BCD. Which wheels do you prefer for 50/50 mixed terrain rides?
Thanks Jameso - the 650bs are probably the best all round: quick enough on road, great on dirt and gravel and only really fall down in proper mud. I used them for the Gold CX gravel cross event last October - struggled in the wet chalky mud, as did everyone else, otherwise they were spot on.
Cheers
Benn
I’ve just bought an Arkose 2 2016 frame (like pclayto above) - any tips on the internal cabling? I guess the gear cables cross over internally ... is there a recommended order for inserting them?
Thanks.
any tips on the internal cabling? I guess the gear cables cross over internally … is there a recommended order for inserting them?
I'd recommend the RHS / rear mech cable go into the LHS of the frame so as you say, they cross internally. Just feed them in, either first, they'll pop out the bottom and then go to the BB cable guide. It's just about as easy as an external cable route.
Thanks jameso.
Apologies for the late reply mcnultycop - I have 38's on mine.
Jameso, thanks continually posting on here. Can I check in with you please, I'm looking at another Arkose and I was wondering if you have any of the 2018 Arkose 1 framesets going at all? I love the colour and glittery appeal of the 1 🙂
No probs : ) No Arkose 1 framesets sorry TD .. just the stock separate frameset.
@jameso - Mudguards to cover 700x40 tyres on an arkose 4 - bluemels/chromoplastics (not sure what the difference is)? Something else? Thanks
40mm tyres and reasonable space for guards might be an issue if you have 11s - FD arm is a bit long. Also hard to get a 45mm section guard in over a 40mm tyre on the 2016 bike - more clearance on the 2017-18. Any guard should work if it's 45mm section but you'll prob find a 35mm tyre and a 42mm guard an easier fit.
Thanks jameso! It’s a 2018 model so no FD & decent clearance, will try some 45mm sks somethings and see what happens.
hi JB72
The cable routing did confuse me for a while. Looking at online photos, the internal gear cable would cross inside the downtube. That's how I have installed my cables, as JamesO recommends. The cables do not touch the frame at all, if installed like this.
Next time though, I will do it so they internal cables do not cross. This is how some other bike brands have it, but the cables will rub the headtube, so some protective tape will be required.
Just bought a frameset to replace a broken London Road. Looking at the internal cable routing it appears there's no stop for the brake cable. Which makes sense if you're using hydraulics, but I'm using BB7s. I assume people just run a full length outer for the rear brake even for the internal routing.
I assume people just run a full length outer for the rear brake even for the internal routing.
Yep, esp. for cable brakes. Once you get the outer length right, feed it as far in from the lever end as poss, wrap a few cable ties around the outer and feed them as far up the outer as poss - help reduce any potential rattles. If possible, seal the caliper end with some grease under the end cap or use a shielded cap.
Cracking thanks 😀
So finally found some time to build the frame up. I was really impressed especially with the smalls things, for example all bolts e.g. for bottle cages were already greased. Anyway on a quick local shakedown ride of a few miles I really like it. Seems more compliant than the London Road frame which it replaced. Not got round to weighing it yet but so far really like it.
Good job Jameso.
Sorry pic isn't the best.
Hi.
Well, firstly: this has been one of the continually best threads through me deciding to buy and Arkose in 2015, and subsequently what people recommend to kit it out with. Such a welcome relief from the rest of the internet!
And also @jameso as others have said, thanks for continually posting here. It's great to get tips and suggestions straight from the horse's mouth.
Can you tell there's a question coming though!? 😉
Unfortunately my Arkose 4 2015 frame just broke. (Is it trying to tell me to lose weight?) It was all going rather well getting replaced under warranty and was getting built up yesterday, but unfortunately the one they'd ordered in was one of the newer frames that has the through-axle on the front fork instead of quick-release. Apparently, there isn't any of the 2015 year frames left now, so they need to contact the warranty people again on Tuesday to work out what to do.
I guess one option is to get a different front wheel.
However, I've just been looking at the Evan's website and there's still some stock of the Dolomite frameset from 2016 which seems to still have the QR on the front fork. So I was wondering whether to suggest that as an option too as whilst it is nice to have the option for wider tyres, I've only ever had max 28s on there as I've just been commuting on roads with it.
So my question is:
- are the main differences between the Dolomite and Arkose just that the Arkose has a little bit longer wheelbase, BB bit higher off the ground, and much better clearance for wide tyres?
Thanks for any advice anyone,
Paul.
Hi Paul, good to know the warranty process worked out, shouldn't be any probs if you wanted the Dolomite frame. Geometry tables are on the Evans site, they fit similarly just with the handling differences you'd expect from the more road biased design. Still, it's not a racy, low bike, more of a good winter trainer, audaxer kind of road bike. HTH.. cheers James
Thanks @jameso for the reply.
Popped into the store this afternoon to chat to them about it. There was only one of the Dolomite frames with QR on the front left in stock at the warehouse, so they've ordered it for me already before someone else snaps it up. So at least I have a fallback now if the Arkose is not going to be an option. Although I guess it would have only been a case of getting a through-axle compatible front-wheel to replace my QR one. Anyway, will see what the warranty peeps suggest.
Thanks again.
Does anyone have experience of the Alfine or the x?
I'm toying between the 2; I've had an iOID Alfine for years and it' been faultless.
Mainly for bridleways and long rides round Cranbourne Chase/Salisbury plain.
I keep looking at the Arkose and wanting to buy one but how the hell do I justify it when I have no use for one !
I either to change jobs or move house or retire.
Help, the teal and the luminous yellow look lovely !
Help me justify !
Hi, I'm after some very specific Arkose knowledge please!
I'm currently building up a new bike but have yet to buy the frameset which will more than likely be an 2017 Arkose 4.
I'm hoping to use a set of 650b Fulcrum Red Power wheels that has a 15mm thru axle on the front. I've bought a 12mm sleeve that will shim the hub down to 12mm so it can be used with the Arkose. My worry is that the 15mm part has an outer diameter of 20mm which may catch on the inside of the fork dropouts. Are the Arkose forks flush on the inside of the forks or are they shaped in a way that will prevent me from using these wheels?
Hope that makes sense?
Thanks
hi all, quick question (because i'm being somewhat lazy and haven't trawled through the earlier posts much!), that I guess Jameso might know the answer to- 43mm panaracer gravel kings on stock rims on 2015 arkose 4, will they fit? anyone already got any on theirs? either tubeless or not...
Are the Arkose forks flush on the inside of the forks or are they shaped in a way that will prevent me from using these wheels?
Hope that makes sense?
Sorry, late reply, been away. Yes it makes sense, I'd have to check a fork though and won't have one in front of me for a few days. It's not entirely flush there but I can't be sure if it's in any way that will cause an issue for the larger end cap.
Is it not possible to replace the hub end cap instead? One reason that going with 12mm for a bike like this was OK was that you can go down a size for 15mm hubs, but not all 12mms can go up a size.
43mm panaracer gravel kings on stock rims on 2015 arkose 4, will they fit?
Can't see why not, the rims were ATD490, TLR with 17mm internal width. Ideally I'd go a bit wider these days but that was the spec range then. Fork crown clearance might be a bit tight, 40mm Nanos fitted but only just.
(same for others asking about ATD490s and tubeless a while back)
Hi,
can any of the current framsets be ran Singlepseed? I really need to replace my ageing commuter with something disk friendly. Thanks.
^ The Arkose Alfine frameset can - https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-arkose-alfine-2017-frameset-EV294333
(ignore the 2017 tag, it's the same frame on 2018 bike also)
Thanks Jameso, that should have been bleedin' obvious 🙂 I blame a long ride yesterday 🙂
Still enjoying my 2015 Arkose 4. Currently running Nano 40's and managed to fit some mudguards with a bit of help from a hacksaw and heatgun.
Any chance a 650b will squeeze into this frame?
Here it is in all it's glory after a very muddy ride

@jameso - re: 2018 women's Arkose, my wife is thinking about getting a new do-it-all bike and I recommended the Arkose. She has tried drops before and had issues with the finger reach whilst in the drops, reaching to the lever. (It was a men's bike though). For the kind of riding we do this would be ideal if she was comfy with the "reach".
Do the women's versions have different STI shifters? Or are they fitted with shims for smaller hands?
Thanks
Is it not possible to replace the hub end cap instead? One reason that going with 12mm for a bike like this was OK was that you can go down a size for 15mm hubs, but not all 12mms can go up a size.
Thanks Jameso for the reply.
The Fulcrum hubs I have seem to be built around a 20mm axle which have a 15mm thru-axle spacing. I don't think I can change the end caps but I may be wrong. I had a look at some Arkose forks yesterday and there is quite a definite shoulder around the 12mm opening which may obstruct my Fulcrum hub.
My problem now is I've faffed around so much that all the medium 2017 Arkose 4 framesets have sold out!
Thanks again for the reply.
Just ordered myself a 2018 Arkose 2.
Do the women’s versions have different STI shifters? Or are they fitted with shims for smaller hands?
Bump spot ... Same STIs as the RS405 and 505 have reach adjustment, ~10mm in total at the fintertip area.
Hello,
Just a few questions if you dont mind.
I understand the FD "pull" is from the bottom, but what about the swing? Is it to from the bottom?
Does anyone use inline brake levers with there mech disc brakes? Can you still get a tight/firm lever is it mushy?
Last one..i promise. Has anyone fitted a drop seat post on their arkosy? model? internal or external? did you have to hack into the frame for the cable?
Do the guys in-store know this too?
All 600 of them? Maybe not, if I was on the shop floor for the day I'm sure I would be caught out on not knowing the spec detail of every part, to be fair. It says on the product page of the Evans site that 505s have reach adjust but not on the 405 spec. 405s do have it though.
Just ordered myself a 2018 Arkose 2.
High 5!

Not sure what you mean there sorry?
Does anyone use inline brake levers with there mech disc brakes? Can you still get a tight/firm lever is it mushy?
Does tend to make them less positive or at least more sensitive to set up, we used to spec them then removed them later on. It was a popular spec a while back but the CX link has faded and they seem less requested now.

Don't hack/drill into the frame : ) just run it under the TT with some zip ties maybe?
High 5!
Cheers! And bang on the Cycle to work limit...
While you're here, do you have a recommendation for mudguards and pannier rack? Thanks.
I'm getting a 2 unless any one can convince me a 3 is worth the extra
While you’re here, do you have a recommendation for mudguards and pannier rack? Thanks.
Any/most good ones will fit, the bike doesn't have any specific mount needs. You may find some 26" racks fit OK as the upper eyelet on the SS is ~20mm higher than if it were on the rear of the dropout.
I’m getting a 2 unless any one can convince me a 3 is worth the extra
What you get is the full carbon fork (-250g or so) and 11s 105 with a Praxis compact chainset. Just comes down to whether you value that for the added £250.
I won't suggest the 3 rides dramatically (or even much) differently, perhaps I'd pick up on the carbon steerer fork being a tad comfier if I was feeling particularly sensitive but I wouldn't bet a large sum on it. The 2 is a great bike for the money, the 3 mainly upgrades the spec.

Thanks. 50mm width for the guards?
Hi all! Based on this thread I had guts to order one and it finally arrived to Finland last week. So far it feels good and seems to be what I imagined beforehand! I was just starting to fit mudguards and noticed that the front fork design seems to got updated at some point as mine has normal hole through the fork in the up and the eyelets are in the end of the fork and not in the middle anymore, is this the normal way for new Arkoses? I was mentally prepared to twist and fiddle to get front mudguard installed nicely. The saddle has been positive surprise also, might not need a change at all.
And here's how a stock Three looks like, going to add mudguards and rack for commuting.

...is this the normal way for new Arkoses?
Yes, from 2017 onwards, new fork spec.
50mm width for the guards?
Might get a bit tight, depends on the tyres you're using but 42-45mms fit better. Space for 50s though.
