Just wanted to post my Arkose up here as ive read most of 23 pages of the thread. and James O is my hero.
Ive spent a silly amount of time and effort and money in building up this bike.
2013 Arkose frame
Sram Apex 1 group set (hydro discs, 11 speed, 10-42 cassette)
Hope 20five wheels (Pro 4 hubs)
WTB nano 40s (they fit fine)
Ritchey venture max flared shallow drop bars.
25* zipp stem
Fabric shallow saddle
Knock off Canyon VCLS seatpost from china 🙁
Nuke proof headset spacers
Fiziks seatpost collar thing
PRO performance seat clamp
Lizard skinz bar tape.
Approx 10kg with pedals.

Now I know that thru axle forks are stiffer, might have to get 2017 frameset when they drop.

What's the current go to recommendation for guards for a 2015 Arkose 4 (the blue one, carbon fork). What's the current go to recommendation for guards for a 2015 Arkose 4 (the blue one, carbon fork). I'm currently running the stock Small Block 8's on there (well, I've replaced them when they woe out but kept the same tyre) but will probably fit some 32 -35mm winter road tyres, erm, for the winter.

SKS Chromoplastics here - I've fitted the 35mm variant, but that is because they were removed from my previous bike - the next width up (40mm I think) would be better.
No issues when fitting but you might need to bend/shape/cut the stays a bit, especially on the front.

Read back through this thread, loads of mudguard info earlier on.

Finally hit buy on the Arkose 4 last weekend as it was in a sale (10% off). Now marked as out of stock for every size except XL, but hopefully it'll turn up at the shop soon.

Very excited! It's to replace my five year old Madone as a more versatile bike. Sections of bridleway, tracks and towpaths linking up quieter roads. Very excited!

Anyone got any pictures of the black 4 in the flesh? Keep me entertained while I'm waiting!

my arkose was stolen in feb, replaced it with a rapide rl2 disc whose forks snapped after 2 rides. now im bikeless

I picked up my Arkose 3 on Thursday so I've only manned to get out on it once so far but I think it's going to be perfect for me as a commuter/ winter road bike.

I've had mine for about 9 months, mainly as a winter bike and a bit of off road when it's dry. I really like it, its so versatile with 40mm G Ones set up tubeless and a few other upgrades. Possibly a bit small for me at 6'4 but overall very happy with it.

I need to sort rotors and a cassette but I'm looking forward to giving this a spin.

Hmmm, have got an Arkose Ltd reserved at Evans, but they are telling me that it will cost £74.49 if I want to have it tubeless. I've never had tubeless before, but that seems a bit steep when the bike itself comes with rims which [url= https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-arkose-ltd-2017-adventure-road-bike-EV294853 ]Evans say[/url] are "tubeless compatible" and tyres which they describe as "tubeless ready". Am I being ripped off? I loved the bike when I test rode it, but Evans always seem to make it really hard work buying from them!

Just do the tubeless conversion yourself. You'll need to buy your own fluid for top-ups anyway.

I spent approximately £15 on tape, £12, on values and £15 in sealant and a couple of hours or so of time to get my hope rims running tubless.
I then spent another £20 and another hour changing over to stans rubber inner thing as couldn't get the first attempt to seal, sealant comming through the spoke holes.
So actually £75 doesn't seem to be too bad. 🙂

Am I being ripped off?

Many thanks all. Sounds like I should forgive Evans and this might have to be a learning experience then! Any recommendations for tape or sealant? If it is relevant the rims are Alex Volar 2.1 and the tyres WTB Riddlers.

Andy, Dolomite SS will have flat-mount brakes to follow how the Dolomite '17 frame evolved, and black paint, otherwise the same. Not due in for a couple of months though.

You could ride a M or L, if the reach and stack of the M is close to what you have now I'd go for that.

What's the biggest tyre I can get in a dolomite SS?

After thinking some more (and increasing the budget!) I toyed with an Arkose SS for some trailway duties - but the 2017 is OOS! - when is the '18 due?

So - if I can't get an Arkose can I bulk up a dolomite with some CX tyres etc?

FWIW, I'm 5'9 and had a test ride on a friends 'M' Dolomite and found the stack a little high and the reach a little short.

The M Dolomite is within a few mm either way of the Roubaix and Diverge 56cm reach and that Andy was asking about though, and it's 15-25mm lower stack than either. It's not a race geometry but it's not as upright as some sportive bikes either. Maybe the bar shape made a difference?

Andy, Dolomite SS will take 32s w/o guards. We're not bringing in an Arkose SS '18 sorry. Limited by the number of drop bar models we can have! A shame as it was a personal fave but the Dolomite SS is at a price where we sell many times more bikes than the Arkose SS.

Hmm - that's a shame about no Arkose SS! Thinking if a dolomite is still the way to go, but go for a skinny cx style tyre for trailway duties.

Out of interest - is the rear wheel on the dolomite a normal freehub with spacers and a single sprocket? Or a screw-on SS freewheel?

Saw the Arkose Ltd in the local Evans today. Fine looking bike. Glad its too expensive for RideToWork otherwise I could have been tempted

I got mine on Cyclescheme, store accepted a cash top up...

Picked mine up earlier this week, and yes, the store accepted a cash top up. You'll need to find another excuse. It rides beautifully, on road and off.

Does anyone know what size of bolt is necessary for the fork eyelets in a 2016-17 arkose 4? I'm trying to fit my mudguards and none of my massive bolt collection fits. I'm suspecting a bizarre imperial size or odd thread pitch.

I believe you can fit up to 50mm on 650b (I'm running WTB Byways, 47mm) and up to 40mm on 700c (mine came with 40mm WTB Nanos).

BC discount seconded, reckon the Arkose Alfine is in budget if they will do the 10% - but as its an 'in-house' brand I doubt there is much incentive.

Also, is the internal frame routing on the Alfine model specific to the Alfine, or the same as the other UK spec models? I know the LTD Di2 has different blanking plates but I guess the frame itself is the same on all models?

That's good news. I've not looked under the bb but sounds like I just feed through the downtube then pops out at the bb. Fingers crossed 🙂

Mine has certainly stood up well to 22 months of commuting. Couple of chips but that's nothing to do with the paint.

Cable through the downtube was a breeze btw, hardest bit was getting it through the shifetr.

It's chipped away from the carbon fork where I take the front wheel off and otherwise generally abuse the bike.

Can't tell when the wheel is on though...

Otherwise, it's been pretty sturdy.

Jameso - I've just bought a 2017 arkose 3 and i'm trying to work out which mounts I should use for the mudguards and which i should use for the rack. The frame has a set on the inside of the triangle and a set on the outside.

Having reviewed the thread I've seen that the pinnacle 3 that Brigante posted a page or so back has both the rack and mudguard mounts on the outside of the triangle - this makes more sense to me as there seems to be very little space between the disc and the inner mount on the non drive side. I think they're both 2017 frames, so what's going on?

Hi Ewan, the inside hidden mount was how they were arranged on the 1st production run. The idea was to use the inner mount with a taper/flatter headed bolt to mount a guard, the outer for the rack that needs more space - or just use the outer one for guards only. Feedback was that no-one was bothered about seeing 2 mounts on the outside and using std bolts was easier so they were moved on a later batch.

I've gone ahead and ordered an Arkose 1!

Looking for a wheel upgrade from the stock 2017 arkose 3 wheels, anybody know the stock wheel weight.

I thought I'd keep this thread updated with my ongoing experiences - I used my Arkose X for the "Gold Rush Gravel Cross" event at the weekend, running on the 650b wheels and WTB Byways.

Apart from one particularly sloppy and rutted section, it all worked very well (the original fit 40c WTB Nanos would have been better for that bit, but I think most things would have struggled, given how muddy it was and how deep the ruts were), coping with some fairly rough off-road sections and having enough gears for the various up and downs on road. A thoroughly good morning out!

So, yes, I think it is pretty durable.

Agreed - mine is holding up well. A few grease marks (mine is white!) but cleans up well and, with the exception of small sections on the dropouts, still looks good / almost as new.

Quite like the look of the new arkose 4 (rival 1x, tubeless ready) although not 100% on the colour...

Lime green with tan sidewalls looks a bit weird to me.

I think the colour is awesome but agree all black tyres and rims would look better.

save me trawling 25 pages, the arkose 3 review from Road.CC on page one says "35mm tyre but you could probably go bigger" anyone know how big? and does the arkose 4 have more clearance? what are the differences between the 3 and 4 apart from around £100 for the frameset?

you can go as far as 700x45 since MY 2017

I have a 2015 Arkose 4 and can fit 40c Nanos in it. Lots of mud and you get fork rub. Afaik the 2016 & 17 have more clearance. The LTD comes with Riddler 45c doesn't it? So 2018 greater again.

Ooooh. That is nice. I find myself tempted by something with a little more clearance than my Pro6. Any ideas on the frame weight anyone? Or if you could persuade stealth dropper routing round the BB?

Is there anywhere you can demo these 'properly'? I know 'Evans' but I was largely assuming that would just be round the car park.

If you are at testing at the Gatwick store there is a bridleway that heads off just outside the car park, it’s basically a short farm track but it would be better than the car park. I think they might say don’t get it dirty but not sure. I don’t think the test rides a particularly time limited so you have time to get out of the carpark if you want 🙂

I'm not going to get hung up on 20g here or there but I'm not keen on adding a chunk of weight into the frame if I can avoid it, which I think is what the tripster AT would do compared to the pro 6. Actually, I just looked it up and it's (claimed) 1.42 up to 1.84kg. I suspect it adds the stiffness for riding hard with luggage but the pro6 is my road bike too and I'll keep weight off it where I can.

I notice the spec says three bottle cage mounts but I can't see them on the photos- am I looking in the right place under the downtube? Any hints on stealth routing- I've had a few crashes trying to ride something steep and slippery on the drops and the saddle has caught up with me!

The photo samples used last year's frame as it's identical apart from the under DT bosses. Production bikes have them, they just needed ISO tests before production.
Stealth dropper routing not inc, would be a case of drilling out one of the gear cable guides to take a full outer if you're not going to use an FD, then route around BB casing/shell. It'd be tight but fine for a hydro hose.

The holes are inner only then? Any pictures of how they exit under the bb? I wonder how easy it would be to 3D print a version of the classic under bb cable guide that would sit inside the be shell to take it round the axle sleeve.

1910g in a Small. Suprised at that tbh.

I was a bit disappointed as it's getting heavy enough to push it out of what I'm looking for. It's a shame because I quite like the look of it, the kinesis guys were very helpful and the short ride round the park I had on one seemed nice. I just know what that extra weight starts to do to a road bike- if I was looking for a rough duty tourer/tough cx bike primarily I think it'd be pretty on the money.

I think they said it was basically the downtube off the old FF29, which may give some clue as to construction/intent.

Any pictures of how they exit under the bb?

Ive just received an arkose 3 2017 frame set (the red/orange one)
Looks pretty nice, smoothed welds and sort of cowled drop outs.
My main concern now is that the fork (aluminum steer tube) feels a bit hefty in the hand. Dont suppose you know how much lighter the all carbon fork on the 2017 arkose 4 is?
Do you think there is any chance evans would swap just the fork for me. maybe for some sur charge?
