What fork is this guy running? Would be interested in an Arkose if I could run low loader front panniers on occasion, everything else about the bike ticks the box's for what I am looking for

Slightly random question. On the 2017 Arkose two (a 2x10 setup), there is a widget clamped to the seat tube below the front mech, it has a protrusion almost like a coat hook and looks like it might be some sort of thing to catch the chain if it drops off the lowside. Is there anything more to it? if not I'll remove it

It's there to catch the chain if it falls off. It weighs nothing, why remove it?

Had a couple of rides this weekend on my '15 Arkose 4; such a capable bike.

Anyone tried to road plus his / hers 2016 Arkose?
I'm currently running 40mm WTB Nano's on a 21mm internal rim but for the summer I'd like some more cushion. Out back there seems plenty of clearance for a 650B 2.1 racing ralph, or 2.0 race king or similar fast XC tire. The fork seems to run a bit narrower but I reckon I still got about 5mm of clearance on either side so I'm wondering if a 50mm 650B tire would fit. I'm guessing the widest part will come a little lower than the widest part on a 700c tire. And I keep reading specs for other bikes which state 'will fit 700x40 or 650x2.1', does this count for the arkose as well.

Apart from all that, I really dig my Arkose. Used it for cross this winter and rode the Flanders full sportive on it. Really impressed with the frame. The only negative is the paint, it seems to chip rather easily and it shows rubbing marks form my framebag something I don't get on my other bikes. I wonder if it has got to do with the matte finish compared to a shiny one.

Hi again - question for Jameso if you're around re sizing.

I'm just over 5'11'', with an 88cm inseam (I think, something above 34.5'') and slightly longer arm span than height (184 v 181cm). Judging by the size chart, I'm assuming I'm on a large?

if you could check the 2016 ss frame with the WTB Byways that'd be great.

Ben - yes, Large. We can exchange within 30 days if I'm wrong but I'm pretty confident you'll fit it well. I'm 6' with similar leg/arm reach and fit the L well.

Just because I learnt how to post photos, a pic of my arkose. Gets used a lot. It's just a bike and I love that.

It'd clear the fork in the dry, just. Best if you're fairly light. I reckon I could get the tyre brushing the side of the fork if I tried but I'm 6' / 12st. But ISOstandard min clearance for road tyres is 5mm .. MTB is 6mm. So officially I have to say no-go. The 2016 bike has 72mm bb drop though (more on 2017) so a 42mm Pari-Moto fits fine and the BB height is OK, that was what I was using before WTB made 47mms.

Just seen the Alfine Arkose...... looks like the perfect machine for me that I didn't know I needed until I saw it!!

Like my old Day One Alfine .. just a fair bit lighter. 2017 frame so takes 650s too. Byways on Alfine?

@phy7tes, it'll be the standard road MegaExo if the bike has an FSA road crank on it. They're all the same dimensions.

Thanks for this. Seems that there are a few MegaExo models though: omega, gossamer, gamma, v-drive !! Any idea which one I need? Cheers.

I gave up looking for an FSA BB when I saw the prices. Ended up buying a Shimano CX chainset which came with BB for £65 safe in the knowledge that new BB's are only a tenner or so.

Does anyone (JamesO?!) have any idea of the weight and a2c height of these(currently out of stock)?

They look like a well priced fork for a gravel bike, only other similar ones I've seen are the Selcof forks from PX, but they don't have guard mounts

800g fork weight. Seems a bit high....if anyone could confirm....

800g seems out, the al-carbon version is around 750-800g - the full carbon versions are around 550g from memory. They're made by ADK, good forks.

Sorry, missed this at the time. 2017 fork is 5mm longer to clear a bigger tyre - yes it'll fit, but it will raise the 2016 bike a bit and have a minor effect on handling.

I took a plunge and went for it: Ritchey Vantage 650B wheels (21mm internal) and WTB Byway tires.
After a week or so on the wheels they come out at just under 47mm. It's a tight fit, about 3mm clearance, but I'm rather light and I only intend to use them in dry conditions. I've tried hard but I can't get the tires to rub my fork while riding (I've placed some protective strips just in case).
I have only done one gravel ride on the Byway's but they do what I expected them to do: roll well on the road and soak up the bigger hits better than my 40mm Nano's offroad.

While we're on the subject of wheels what maintenance can I do to the wheels on a 2016 arkose 4 in terms of the hubs. The front has gone that rumbly way that suggests the wearings are dry. There's no play in them but something doesn't sound right.

I've had a creak on my 2015 Arkose 4 since day one. I've stripped the entire bike since, had the recalled derailleur hanger replaced and even evans had a look in the early days and replaced the rear skewer with a shimano one. It occurs when pedalling and I'm half inclined to think it's the wheelset but don't have any others to test it on.

I had the issue which the hanger was recalled for where the rear wheel slipped out of the dropouts when putting power down and the frame has since been damaged. However, don't think that's a factor....

Anyone with a similar experience?

I've had my Arkose X for a month or so now - really enjoying exploring local lanes, byways and bridle ways.

Provo - where did you get the Ritchey wheels from? Do they adapt to 12mm through axle out of the box or did you need to buy a conversion kit?

I was looking at Hunt 650bs, but they're only 19mm internal width, which seems like a backwards step from the 21mm 700c rims I'm running with WTB Nanos at present.

The wheels were on sale at chain reaction cycles. As they are MTB wheels they do not come with adapters, the front wheels is 15mm but I believe Ritchey sells 12mm end caps. My arkose fork is 15mm. They are 21mm internal and would I have had more clearance I would have even gone wider, probably 25mm internal.
The only issue I have my 11 speed sram road cassette doesn't fit the cassettebody. I think a ritchey road body would work but for now I just removed the 12T sprocket.

Are there any disadvantages to picking up the current Arkose single speed to then at some point transform it into a 1x11 build? Will be mainly for commuting for now and then the random adventure now and again

I just love the color way much more than the geard Tiagra build

M4xime, not really no, has ability to take a rear mech with the right hanger fitted.

Ben, WTB i25s here. Had some 20mm Pacentis which were fine for 42c but see nothing apart from a few grams against the 25s now there's bigger tyres available. Either works ok though.

Thanks James - I took a punt and have a new set of wheels in the garage with i25 rims, just waiting for the Byways to arrive from Germany as I have everything else ready and waiting. Will get some pics up next week. Am also planning on getting some more road oriented tyres for the original wheels to cover most of the bases.

When is that steel version to come out? Might hold off getting one then. Also, with that version being steel would you be confident it would be fine to be stored outside in a shed? Don't think my SO would be happy with a third bike indoors.

So, on the back of this thread and the passion that James has for the brand, I took the plunge and ordered an Arkose Alfine online last Thursday to replace my Boardman.
Had an email to confirm the order and that it should be ready for collection on Monday. Call the store today (Wimbledon) to get told that it won’t be ready at all as they’ve not built it yet.
It’s not the fact that it’s not ready, it’s that no-one has even bothered to contact me and everything I’ve had from the emails said Monday. I’ve now organised to go to Wimbledon to collect it tonight and I’m wasting my time.
The blasé attitude of the staff is just ridiculous. Couldn’t care less attitude. I’m in a queue and that’s it.
I said that I could collect it and build it myself but was told it’s not assembled at all which I find ridiculous as I’m sure that it’s not just a box of parts by the time it reaches the store….
Call customer service to be told that they’ve redirected my complaint to the store.

All the confusion could easily be avoided if the wording of their emails was different and said, “call the store after placing the order to agree your collection date.”
Instead, you’re led to believe that it’s a magical service where your bike will be ready on a certain day and you get a phone call to agree a collection time….

Sure - it'll be a tourer. Triple MTB gearing, Marathon Mondials, rack and guards. Might do a minimal 1x bikepacker spec but for now we wanted more of a classic tourer as we haven't got that in the range. I like the testing opportunities it may present..

I have anyone managed to source a replacement mech hanger for the arkose 3 (2017), my local Evans don't know when they will be sent some as it's a new model.

2017 Arkose hanger - code BRGD8 - seems that they're out of stock as they're not showing online, willneed to check that tomorrow.

Nice one! There was a red one on Evans the other week, but it didn't have full carbon forks so I dithered and now it's gone. Not really bothered which year, as I was considering some new callipers anyway.

I own a 2015 Arkose Two and wonder, if that would fit...

Thinking of an arkose frame I am 5'8" but with a curvature of the spine from an accident, the longest top tube i want is 54 effective TT wich equtes to a small arkose does that sound daft I cant try before i buy I am in france.

@root - tyres are from r2-bike in Germany- worked out about £50 each with postage. Very pleased so far - roll fast and give good traction on most surfaces I ride on. These tend to be local lanes, bridle ways and tracks - no tried in mud, but would switch back to the other wheels and WTB nanos for that. Alpkit have a good range of WTB tyres, just not the Byways (at least when I was buying).

@ilfer - wheels seem fine so far - I needed to swap the front axle end caps to go from 15mm to 12mm but all straightforward. Bit of pinging on the first ride, but settled down and seem solid since then. Afraid I didn't weigh them - if I get a chance I'll weigh the complete wheels which would provide an indication. I'll also have a look at clearance, but I think from earlier posts I'll have more in the 2017 frame than earlier years, so might not be helpful! I think Jameso has addressed this above or elsewhere though.

@wicki, I am 5'8" and have a small Arkose (2015). It's fine for me - I am on the border between small and medium according to the sizing chart, but I think it's perfect.

I'm also 5'8" and test rode both small and medium (2015) before buying. It felt like either could work for me. In the end I plumped for medium, deciding that way only because my road bike is medium and I'm used to that. Could just as easily have got on with the small, I think.

Shindiggy, BGRD8 Dolomite/Arkose flat mount version hanger - it's in stock, code EV290813, just not on the site yet. Upload delay perhaps, sorry. Shops can order with that code though or call to mail order.

DTF - We have some XL flat mount / '17 framesets, full carbon fork but full RRP also currently.

I'll try asking my question again about wheels. I have a 2016 arkose but the front wheel has a lot of play and sound 'hollow'. I had a quick look last night and can't see any way to take up play. Apart from pack the bearings with grease is there anything else I can do or are they pretty much non serviceable?

Which model Gary? If it's a sealed bearing hub it's easiest just to replace them.

Thanks for the info James, any idea on the stock arkose 3 wheel weight. Mine are sounding and feeling a bit rough already after just 6 weeks, so will be looking for an upgrade sooner than later.

Arkose 4 has replaceable cartridge bearings, so just replace the bearings if they are knackered.

I've just had my bike back from its 4-6 week service and the gearing (front and rear) is now terrible, I had just re-tensioned and indexed it a few days ago. God knows what they've done in the store.

kililauea I saw that and my wallet got very hot in my pocket !!! given the climber switches are a usual addition to the TdF bikes (they get some hammer) then I'm sure they will cope with some off-roading

I have a 2014 arkose 2 and am considering upgrading groupset to 105 hydraulic disk.
It currently has a square taper BB - will this take a press fit or external BB?
I assume it will take a front derailleur - if so what type?
Also brake mounts - are they post or IS?
