I've an old "bike for sale" ad on pinkbike, from a year or so back, assumed it had expired but since start of April have had 15 enquiries about it from separate accounts, the last inquiry before that was 9 months ago.

Is there some new sort of fraud going on that's got people jumping in to participate, or have Aeris's recently become hugely desirable?

Probably that

You do get scammers on there, but usually sellers.

if you've still got it listed why wouldn't you expect enquiries? Lots of people don't check the date it was listed and their search criteria might only pick that so it's not miles back in a list.

I put my daughter's cross bike up for sale end of last season on facebook, cross group but also on the marketplace, didn't go, not one sausage of interest, so just figured I'd try again at start of next season. Must have been contacted by 20 + people last month in lockdown asking about it. The vast majority of whom thought it was an adult bike (it's a 24 isla).
So yeah there is enormous interest in the secondhand bike market right now.

Because I'd had no queries in the previous 9 months, then 15 in 6 weeks.

I'd heard there was a bit of a bike shortage, just seemed an odd sort of bike to go mad for when we're locked down at home.

No scam, just a shortage of bikes and a high demand for them.

You're overlooking the fact that Pinkbike have a fully functioning classsifieds section. So once your ads up its easy to find if you're searching for a certain bike or bikes near to you

What's the best place to sell road kit (frame set, brakes, wheelset) these days? West Lancs, don't do Facebook or social media.

I read this thread earlier, it reminded me I had an old kids bike hanging up in the garage that had failed to sell... stuck it up on Facebook and got swamped with messages and sold within two hours. People are desperate for bikes it seems

Any view on whether 26" MTBs are sellable too? Got my old Ibis Mojo in bits in the garage. If I could get a few hundred quid for it I'd put it back together again and sell it.

Something good in small or med 26 will go no prob for kids / teens moving up through the bikes. Large 26 will still shift but it's more pub bike material.

Now is the time to have that garage clear out. Sell your 26 inch stuff.

Most of the people buying on ebay just want a bike and don't understand about wheel sizes, steerers, tyre width etc. All they know is other people are bidding on it so it must be worth buying and they want a bike ASAP!

Sellers market!

In a couple of years time they will sell it all and it will be a buyers market!

Hopefully the market forces will import too many bikes and the demand will fade and there will be big sales to clear stock as the bubble always bursts eventually.

The term "tulip mania" is now often used metaphorically to refer to any large economic bubble when asset prices deviate from intrinsic values.[7]

On the OPs point, I too have just been contacted a load of times about a frame I marked as sold nearly a year ago.
Wonder if they've done an update or restore that's livened up some ads that were dead?

Someone on my local Facebook buy/sell page is banging out a load of tarted up BSO’s at silly money, buyers can’t get enough!

There’s a few folk on FB sales groups that, a coupe of months ago, were ‘desperate key worker needing a bike to get to work on’ that now seem to have a surplus of £300ish quid bikes to sell. For a grand.

Don't even go into the Coronavirus discussion then, some of them couldn't even wipe their own arse without having step by step instructions from the Government. Even then they debate the details for days.

If you really think that then I predict that:

1. You lack compassion for people who are concerned by the situation and govt/societal response.

2. You don't understand the requirements for implementing a coordinated societal response across devolved administrations with high uptake.

3. Aren't as smart as you think you are.

You are, in essence, the current tory government.

I’ve had a bike on pink bike for about 6 months get lots of messages asking if it’s still for sale, can I split, do I want to swap etc I’ve had one guy message me every month saying is it still available. Finally got a guy coming to view it tonight and wants to pay with PayPal good and services so hopefully it will finally sell

make sure you document the sale, get a signed confirmation or pic of him picking it up, as he can claim he hasn’t received it using goods and services. I’d be wanting cash/bank transfer if a person was picking up in person.

That's an alarm bell straight away. Takes bike away, claims non delivery, gets refund. Nothing you can do. Doesn't matter if you have pictures or signatures etc. Oldest scam in the book.

If he insists on Paypal, friends & family/gift payment only when collecting. Or cash.

Cool, thanks 🙂

Yeah, the only thing they accept is an official POD from a delivery company.

Ultimately, the buyer can still 'claim' the item to be missing from the package even with it being signed for & with a bit of a fight, Paypal will always side with them. Having found out the hard way...

Didn’t realise they could do that I’ll message him and say friends and family only, thanks for the heads up

If he's picking it up and taking it away there is no reason why he can't use "friends and family" option in PayPal. If he refuses then he's either ultra cautious or dodgy. Avoid. It's a sellers market, find someone else to buy it.
