You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Morning,
I hope you're all well.
I have Pike RCT3 forks, that are on 130mm.
The fork can be extended to 140mm - which is more what I'm after
question - 'how do I do it??'
Last time I opened up forks, they were on a motorbike, and not done a mtb fork since I raced on 100mm SID's in 2002!
I'm ok with stripping, oils, o'rings air etc, but not sure what I'm supposed to look at to give more travel.
Any help welcome.
Many thanks
Elliott
It’s just a case of buying a longer air spring and swapping it over.
It’s really simple once you have it all apart. It’s just a circlip holding the air spring in place. No harder than a lower leg service.
Hi pal
Thanks for the reply
I was under the impression it has a 'spacer' not allowing it to fully extend
- this is what I took from a conversation with shop that recently serviced them
The right station has the markings on the leg to lift it.
if I can i'll open it up today after a ride.
Where can I find the air spring also?!?
Many thanks
You can also get the new debonair version which is an improvent and easy job.
Older RockShox forks used spacers on the air shaft, modern ones use different length air shafts.
Service manuals, parts catalogues are online
https://www.servicearchive.sram.com/service/rockshox/7
There are videos on youtube of varying quality.
If the fork is new enough you can put the serial number on the back of the crown into trailhead
https://trailhead.rockshox.com/en/
If not the serial number will still give you the production week, a letter then the year.
Did this two days ago ....
New ( upgraded) air spring to 140 ...
Use the RS Pike serial number to make sure you buy the correct bits.
Changing the airspring is easy ( you will need SRAM butter or an equivalent)
If you a wise, you will leave the wiper seal alone - they are probably okay ... the foams are easy to do.
Getting the lower legs back into the uppers with out folding the seals in on themselves is a right pain in the arse...
Awesome,
thanks for the replies.
Will look in to it - though realised I need fork oil, so will be a few days till I get to it!
All the best

I’ve found if you take the little springs off from around the seal and put them further up the stanchion to start with it’s much easier to get the stanchions through the seal cleanly. Then carefully move the springs back down and around the seal again.
Done it 3 times now when I’ve changed air springs.
I think TF Tuned do a lower leg kit with their own oil and 'sram butter' alternative. I'd get the new 2021 debonair shaft that just came out, J-Tech have got them for pre order already.
Joebristol - the spring thing I was told after i had competed the job. It makes perfect sense - and why i didn’t think of it is beyond me ...
I also know I should have frozen the wiper seals ...
Hey guys,
Thanks for the advice.
These are 2017 forks.
The forks sticker says 'debonair' and 'spring' underneath it.
There's nowt wrong with them, just been serviced and ride lovely - but an extra 10mm wouldn't hurt.
(the wife did say that it may sound small but it makes a difference - with a kind of blank look on her face!)
I'll have to spend more time looking in to your advice.
I hope you're all well
Elliott
ok, so looking in to it
Is this the upgrade debonair part for the left leg??
https://www.tredz.co.uk/.RockShox-Air-Spring-Upgrade-Kit-DebonAir-Pike_124946.htm?sku=491756&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google_shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm9D0BRCMARIsAIfvfIYypZEKJx8Yv07nlrRAPIR5QnaKP5-hO2SkuDSsiTag4nwg760g9HAaAjRGEALw_wcB#
It seems a cheap upgrade.
Also, where is the spacer to extend to 140mm travel??
Thanks
You effectively remove a spacer when changing the air spring. This allows it to go to 140mm - air spring is around 32 quid from CRC
Are you on the 2017 boost Pikes ?
not sure.
How would I know?
Just checked, not the boost
the stations are marked with 130mm and 140mm
No other markings on stations
Sticker on legs say
RCT3 - 130mm - Debonair Spring
Many thanks
There is no spacer to remove. You replace the whole air shaft assembly (like what you have linked to, but with a longer shaft.
You need to know what Pike you have, air shaft part numbers;

not sure.
How would I know?
Your front axle would be 110mm gap rather than 100mm.
Use the Rockshox Trailhead webpage if you are not sure.
As has been said before, you will need a longer airshaft, just make sure you get the right one !
Got the serial number - fork details
MODEL NAME Pike RCT3 DPA, 29+
WHEEL SIZE 29"
TRAVEL 130MM
STEERER TAPERED
AXLE 15X110MM BOOST™
DAMPER ADJUST CROWN
SPRING DEBONAIR
Does this make sense now?
Thanks guys
EDIT _ this link -
https://trailhead.rockshox.com/en/
- gave me all details of the parts I need
Many thanks
Looks like you have it sorted.
Might be worth waiting a couple of weeks for the 'new' airshaft version!
I will do pal.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone
All the best
Now then,
Apologies for reviving with a daft question.
Where do I find the 'new' airshaft versions of the 140mm extender?
I don't know what the old looked like and no idea what i'm going to end up with
Thanks
