[Closed] Pike cable guide hole stripped

As above the screw that goes into my RS Pike to hold on the little cable guide seems to have stripped which is a bit annoying. I don’t want to use a cable tie to resolve this either.

It seems it’s an M3x01.5 x 12mm long screw - what options are there to fix this. I’m wondering about:

See if a longer screw the same size will bite into thread further into the hole that it’s not currently reaching (14or16mm perhaps)

Tap the hole out for a bigger diameter screw - is there such a thing as M3.5?

Helicoil it, easy enough to do yourself or drill and tap m4.

Should be plenty of meat to do either.

Worth noting that m3 has a 0.5mm pitch

Ah yes - that was meant to say 0.5 above but the iPhone decided to mess it up!

Never helicoiled anything - do you buy a kit to do that?

Would this work?

Screwfix have one but it’s £26 but I’d prefer not to spend that much - I’m planning to sell the forks in due course so want a good but not too expensive repair.

Lots of helicoil kits on Amazon for a tenner or so, I used one recently to do a brake mount.

I’d fill with epoxy and then drill and tap the epoxy tbh

Just tap it out to 4mm. No need to even drill really in Mg alloy though you can carefully stick a 3.5mm in. Takes 5 mins... stronger than original...

keen to fix it properly rather than glue it - I’m going to order the above linked helicoil alike kit I think.

Thanks for the helicoil idea - it hadn’t occurred to me having never done it before. I don’t have a pillar drill so going to have to be really careful with the drilling bit - almost tempted to pick up one of those bench drill guide stands to put normal drills in

I wouldn't be too worried about a drill guide, it's not like a brake mount where it needs to be perfect, it's only a cable guide. (says the bloke who did his brake mount with a hand drill)

Fork lowers are soft, so it's easy to drill. Take time to clear out all the swarf though, or screwing in the coil can be a pain

Epoxy, drill and tap as suggested above (or just the tap) might be a winner too, although my guess is you'll buy the helicoil kit cheaper than you will a tap

Helicoil kit was £15 delivered with the drill bit / fitting tool / 20 inserts etc.

I already have a tap set but I don’t think it’s fine enough thread and I’d prefer to try and use the original bolt or at least the same size as it’s tight through the rubber grommet as standard and I don’t want to have to try and modify that too bearing in mind I’m looking to sell the fork.

Just use a hand reamer ... Mg Alloy is very soft compared to steel.

How much are you looking to sell the Pike's? Are they boost or not?

Pikes are 2017 RC’s with a Charger 1 damper. Currently 140mm gravel with a 2019 Debonair Airspring and I think 2nor 3 tokens in them. Non boost with a Maxle in it - seems to be the later QR version where you don’t have the 2 bits of metal that are easy to round off.

Tapered steerer tube with quite a decent length to it - I’d have to measure it but it’s on a medium Vitus Sentier atm with a Brand X stem and at least an inch of spacers under the stem.

27.5” fork.

Currently 140mm gravel

Sounds like a pretty hardcore gravel bike, that 🙂

Could be interested if you have a price in mind... been thinking to buy a set and weighing up other options ...

I've got 2 sets of 2015 ish RCT's one of which has a minor scratch in the air chamber still working but for how long? .. Buying new lowers doesn't really make make sense .. and spring conversion is probably more than they are worth. I'd be happy changing to a RC damper and keeping most of a set of spares if it makes sense economically.

I was thinking about £250 ish I guess. Paid a bit more for them ssckndhan skits over a year ago and then added the 2019 debonair airshaft. Most Pikes seem to be going for around there up to £300 on eBay to try and get a guide.

Stanchions look perfect with no scratches I can see.

Pissing iPhone! Sounds like something that Evil gravel bike should have....looks weird already so maybe give it some suspension as well to go the whole hog 😝

£250 sounds reasonable/fair... some very local ones going in the next 20 mins on ebay so I'll bid up to £250 and if not I'll go for yours if you're happy with £250 and we can work out how I get them later. (I'll be at FOD or South Wales somewhere soon)

Don't suppose you've got a link to the kit you bought?

I'd just superglued mine and screwed into that but if this isn't a total pain it sounds like a better fix.

I’ve orders the one that’s 4 posts down from the top - the long link on there. You want the one for M3 x 0.5
