I managed to get to Millenium Centre in Cardiff with some of my kids, while one of my sons took pictures. He wanted me to share, so in no particular order...

A service car:

Great that you got there and thanks for sharing your sons pics! I'm working today otherwise I'd have been there with my camera myself.

Would you mind if, as a photographer or some sort, I offered you/your son some tips I've picked up along the way?

Not at all, r_i_d. I'm sure he'd appreciate it!

Ok. First of all it's great to see someone taking an interest in road cycling and photography and looking over the pics you've put there I suspect he's on the same learning curve that I'm on.

First of all lets talk cameras, the best camera in the world is...the one that's in your hands so be wary of any 'you're using the wrong camera' kind of thoughts.

Now, let's talk composition. Before we consider light and exposure and even focus and all the other things that photographers get hung up on, lets simply consider the picture we're taking, in this case, cyclists. When we take pictures of people, the vast majority of the time our eye is drawn to the head and face. For this reason cycling pictures like this work best when taken from the front quarter of a person. So, to have achieved that from the side of a road I would position myself on a bend (as you appear to have done, kudos!) but I'd have gone further to the left as we look at the pictures so that I could see down the road and have riders ride towards me, perhaps that wasn't possible for you today but it's something to consider for next time.

For pictures of riders side on. These can work fantastically, especially if you 'track' the rider with the camera and press the shutter as you do so, in this manner you can get the static parts of the rider in sharp focus but the background and legs in a blur thus creating a really dynamic image. I really like the picture of the rider from Team Sky above, it's so SO close to being a really strong image the only thing I would change is to bring the zoom back a little so that you get the entirety of the rider and bike.

One tip on this is 'get low'. As you have done, if you compare the final image with the image of the BMC rider taken earlier you will see what a difference it makes.

So, a little tip on camera set up. For sports photography, especially cycling, a short shutter speed is essential. 1/1000 is the 'benchmark' for sports photography although depending on the circumstances I've been as low as 1/500. Also a burst setting is helpful - for rugby images every line-out I take pictures of I use a burst for, for example. So for the Team Sky rider above, I wouldn't have done very much different to you, I'd have zoomed out a little, then used a burst and 'tracked' the rider through the image and then chosen the best picture from the burst.

For a frame of reference then - in a rugby match I'll take around 600 pictures normally. Of that, about 18 will make it to the club's facebook page. If I'm doing a portrait shoot with a model, the ratio is now about 1 from every 20 pictures will make it to 'publication'.

Not to 'big myself up' but my portfolio is at the following link.

If you/your son would like to critique my stuff please feel free to do so - as a self critical note, I'm well aware that currently I'm being challenged by focus but I would welcome any other comments.
