how do I get crystal clear hd pics from the gopro videos? is it best to just try and grab a screen grab (although sometimes blurry)

or is there another setting to use descending on the photo mode or similar?

was thinking of trying the lapse mode to take photos every .5 seconds?

I just export the still from the editing software (in my case Premiere). Works best when there is plenty of light to keep the shutter speed high.

cheers, gonna try the time lapse with 0.5 interval setting I guess that out of the 100 shots or so it will take on a descent at least 1 or 2 should be good

ive tried the screen grab export thing but its very hit and miss and even when it gets a good frame its still a bit blurry

Some good pics not taken by me on PeakDistrictMTB (login probably required)-

Method used was "They are taken with the Gopro 4 Black on 12mp and edited with an app called Snapseed. I had to take hundreds on time lapse to get a handful of decent ones!"

As scuttler says, most of the best action stills on GoPros come from using the timelapse mode.

You can do it in the GoPro studio software

https://gopro.com/support/articles/how-to-create-a-still-image-from-video-using-gopro-studio

Here's one of mine:

EDIT: It's from an aviation firefighting training exercise in case anyone thinks we routinely turn up to real jobs with cameras going!

Or you can play the video in VLC. Then press Shift+S to save a snapshot.
Also you can pause the video, then press E to step forward a frame at a time, so you can find the right point.

great stuff cheers, seems a bit long winded to take 100's of photos just for a good one, but grabbing stills from the video is hardly very clear either

will try that then, sounds like the time lapse is the way to get the clearest pics then!

cheers

EDIT ; have tried the screengrab routine and its doesn't really work, the video is 1080p clear as can be in video form, but pausing on the frames each is blurry, bar maybe the odd one (even then they aren't clear like some of the photos ive seen)

Im interested in finding out how to do this to.

The best I have managed so far is this which is ok but not brilliant.

It was screen grabbed from this which I filmed in 4k

I haven't tried the time lapse yet but will give it a go.

I was wondering if filming at a higher frame rate would help when screen grabbing?

Time lapse or burst mode.

For single frame grabs I use QuickTime player and press Copy on the frame I want. You can then paste the frame into Preview or any other photo editing app to save out the image. Agreed that doing hundreds would be a pain.

The quality of footage and shots from the GoPro's are generally not that great though. Not on the low end ones anyway.

Does anyone have any sound problems from their GoPro's? I thought my bike was rattling but I've narrowed the noise down to the springs underneath the GoPro buttons now. I only found that out by videoing a track walk and my footsteps caused the same "cable rattle" noise as the bike footage... since I don't have any cables to rattle... I figured the noise was coming from somewhere else. I eliminated my helmet and chest mount. Then found that shaking the camera by hand it caused the same noises.

Once you hear it, GoPro videos are never the same.

Mine is the GoPro Hero.
