I’ve just started getting into exploring new routes on my bike, but it’s a pain in the arse stopping all the time to check ViewRanger on my phone. Buying a quad lock would work but worried about the phone if I crash. What other easy options do I have to be able to have either turn by turn directions or maps on a GPS? I have all the maps I need on ViewRanger so don’t want to buy any more to use on another device. I don’t have a laptop either just a phone and tablet, so can routes be transferred from ViewRanger to other devices?

Thanks,

Steve

I just upgraded my phone so turned the old one into a GPS. It works with no SIM just set it at home and amke sure your maps are downloaded and set up for offline use. Seems to work ok so far with viewranger and trailforks.

Given the current Garmin outage my moment of "can I save myself money on a posh garmin with my old phone" was well timed.

I think with viewranger you can export files it's on the setting menu (the ... on the right) and is set up to go to dropbox if you have an account for that. You can also import GPX files.

Dunno about viewranger, but OS app runs in airplane mode, which is great for battery life.

I bought a second phone for bike use. £55 2nd hand from ebay, reasonably rugged and cheap enough not to be worry if it breaks. With viewranger you can use your maps on up to 4 devices so it is just added to my account. The phone clamps onto the bars, screen is easy read, touch screen works with most of my gloves. It'll also run all the other apps (strava, trailforks, etc). Any route created on my real phone will sync to this and vice versa. As it is just for the biking bit I run in flight mode and the battery lasts ages, but it can be a phone, too, in an emergency. I did consider a "proper" gps device but this is so much cheaper
