So, I've just bought a new (to me) road bike and now I'm thinking about some pimpage. What's the consensus about personalised name decals? Do you have them? Can they be cool?

nickname- possibly (if its a cool one (i'll be the judge of that)).

Can be cool if you built the frame yourself.

Not cool.

Ask yourself this:

"Do i need to help my mechanic find my bike out of the rack of identical ones beside the team bus?"

If the answer is "yes" crack on...

+1 the only time unless you are actually a Pro and its one of your team bikes.

Would you also put your name on your car numberplate?

What about if its not your real name but a cool sounding name like Tony'The Laser'Dorado or Mitch Funkbaum?

@ hora, probably not - but that's mainly because my numberplate reads something unfortunately close to WKUUR... So it wouldn't be the best personal promotion.

Almost as cool as having a No Fear sticker on the back of your pimped up Saxo.

Pretty much renders it unsellable without a respray, surely?

understated is always cool, sticking your name on your frame is not understated therefore it can't be cool.

The only exception is when the name exists for practical purposes such as a team bikes, can't have Richie Porte and Chris Froome trying to work out which bike belongs to who based on scratches and scuffs.

In a similar category to having rally-style driver/navigator names on the rear windows of your Focus Sport

Or in fact your name on anything unless you are 7 years old

It shows that you are an "individual" when out on club runs in matching team spandex.

I believe there's a reasonable precedent for artists/designers/musicians putting their name on things so it might be OK in that respect.

They're useful if you race - I see the same faces week in, week out at crit races and only recognise most of them by their bike and their club/team colours. And half the time you don't recognise them if they've not got lid/shades/strip on... So for that reason, I find them useful and I have my name on my racebike. I'm a name, not just a number 😉

I only know one bloke who has his name down his (expensive carbon roadie) frame. I'm not exagerating when I state that he is without doubt the biggest, stinkiest, most bulbous, throbbing, swollen bell end I've ever met in my entire life.

Does that answer your question?

Shibboleth make a good point.

I reckon that you could go one better and get some tattoos on your arms, legs, neck and ideally forehead with your name to make it clear for all.

Not quite a personalised sticker, but I ride one of these (for work - home visits etc)

It's obviously got it's 'name' plastered all over it.
Makes me chuckle every time I get on it...

Have we met in the flesh fella? I have my name on my road bike cause it looks pretty and I'm proud of it and frankly a bit proud of myself. It's all about the kit and the bike.....I say embrace it.

Change your name to Hope / Kona / Shimano / etc. and you can sticker yourself up to the nines.

I took this approach with my number plate.

I initially thought very uncool.

However, went out with an old mate who has recently breathed new life into his 1999 Orange Patriot which was lovely too see it out and about again, dropper post, new Fox forks and Spank Subrosa rims etc. I did notice a very small UK team sticker on his top tube with the name "Uncle Pete" next to the British flag which he was given as a birthday present.
This I believe qualifies as very sweet and therefore, in my book, cool.

Personalised head badges are the way forward if you want something individual without looking like a nob end.

I don't have one but have seen some good ones

You know when you're at a wedding do, and near the end of the night there's an old bloke who's pissed out of his face and decides he's John Travolta, who then starts to feel up the bridesmaids before he falls on his arse and then offers the groom out?
Its about as cool as that..

This is one of those "what would Steve McQueen do" moments

I think you know the answer *

* come to think of it, Steve would prolly have his name on the bike as he's, y'know, cool, but the rest of us? No

My road bike has

"I ain't going on no trail fool!"

and

"Sexytime Explosion"

On either sides of the top tube. I think they were MBUK stickers about 10 years ago, god knows what the roadie club think of it!

Many moons ago I got a custom road bike built (by Charlie Ralph for those in the know).

He put my name on it (on the top tube). I thought it looked pretty gash if I'm honest.

Oh dear. I'm going to have to 'fess up and say that I've got one on my road bike. 😳 In my defence it is custom steel, and the man who built it seemed to take it as a given that my name would be on it, so I was too polite to say otherwise. I've always had a few misgivings about it being there, but on the other hand, the bike is not set up as a racing bike, so there is no danger that I look like I'm trying to be a pro.

EDIT & judging by the post above it does seem that this does appear to be the norm in certain traditional frame building circles.

It's also pretty much the norm in roadbike racing circles... For the reasons I mentioned earlier.

Each to their own, they're a nice little present to give to a cycling friend or relative, 5 or 6 quid off ebay and fit perfectly in a birthday or Christmas card... What's not to love?

So that when you're racing, people know who you are. Without it, you're just a anonymous name on a results sheet, with it, you make far more friends. It's nice to be sociable...

I was told of a bloke at a (car) trackday once. He was in a group of lads from a particular club but where they all had "Bloggs [union jack] AB-ve" or whatever on their romper suits, he had "bloggsy - shagger" written on his

I quite liked that

Hmmmm guilty.... On roadie and xc race bike. Not on the dh bike or hacks. Part of my "finishing" of the bike. I like personalising stuff. I'm probably not fast enough to pull it off tbh, but who cares it's all part of the fun

As a young road club member in the '80's I often saw riders names on the bikes. It was the done thing. I suppose in those days we all rode unique bikes and it was just part of the game.

Since I can never remember names, I find it pretty useful on a club ride. I don't, however have one of my own. Now if I WON Froome's bike, i'd be happy to leave the sticker on.

Ah no, I'd be putting either my own name or electrical tape over the top. Having someone else's name on there is really daft.

in the Alps last year there were a group of lads on mostly TR450s i think, each had a sticker on their top tubes with their nick names, blood type and possibly some other details getting the lifts up

later saw them all standing around a steep rocky chute eyeing it up looking a bit timid, So I just barrelled down it on my 6 year old stickerless Stinky*

*Im no riding god either and I only rode it because I was following my far more competent/fearless mate and indeed I got bounced all over the place and only just made the turn at the bottom

think everyone should have their forum name on the top tube on forum rides. So much easier to spot those who you've had arguments with 🙂

I'm tempted, haven't bothered yet but I have been known to take a permanent marker to my [s]polished[/s] mottled bare ali frame before.

I'm just waiting for people to start applying little KOM stickers like this:

[img] [/img]

on the TT, for every imaginary internet race they win, that will definitely let us identify the bellends...

Personalised name, or worse yet an internet forum user name sticker on your just bike look **** and tell others your a bit of an egotist, but it's your bike you can have what you like on it, most people won't say anything, but they will be quietly judging you... 😉
