So a while back I was waiting outside a gym for my daughters to finish their latest fad lesson that cost's me a fortune & spied a rather cheapish looking lock attached to the railings without anything actually attached to it.
Looked about a bit & realised there are quite a few, then thought that actually you seem to see them everywhere, gym's, train stations, random lamposts etc. So anyway this one was a combi lock, so wasting time I thought I'd have a go at cracking it, about a minute later I had & then I had to think about what I should do about it! So anyway in my infinite wisdom I decided to take the circlip off the end & mix uo the numbers a bit & then put it back as if it hadn't been moved, but with a different combination 😈

If you wanted to do them a favour you could have moved it to a different but visible railing. Twunt. Case closed.

I was thinking it was a public service type action, after all I cracked the combo in only a few seconds 🙂

Sorry, new forum broken, gave me some random message saying to slow down because I worked to fast, I have never been guilty of that, so I blame the forum 🙂

so when that person arrives at the gym, they can't lock their bike up, so they don't bother, thinking it'll be ok. That person then has their bike stolen so starts driving to the gym, contributing to directly to global warming, they tell their friends who cycle that their bike got stolen so all their friends start driving, and they tell their friends and they tell their friends and so on and so on and so on. until the polar ice caps melt and we all drown, or have to share what little land is left with fatties who drive everywhere due to the fear of crime orchestrated by your prank. Perhaps you should unlock the lock, and leave a note saying "I know your code, change it!"

spread the love a little!

it is actually ridiculously easy to pick a combi lock, but not everyone can do it. So it wasn't a very nice thing to do. Though I really do hate people who leave their locks on street furniture, making the place look a complete mess with tattered rusty locks hanging left right and centre.

Theres another reason why you'll see empty bikelocks on street furniture but people here get uppity if you discuss how bikes get stolen

I did read the original post DezB, which I interpreted as an attack on "people who leave bike locks attached to street furniture" as that was the heading, and he proceeded to sabotage some poor strangers lock.

I think perhaps you may have read it but failed to understand it. I am also going to extrapolate that you won't be posting in the "did you go to uni thread" 😆

Surely it's still littering! I think the council should go round and cut every one of them... Laziness isn't an excuse!

Yeah, its laziness that prevents me taking my 2kg D lock everywhere I go, leaving it on the sheff stand outside work.

If you want to use the stand when I'm not there, just lock your bike to it, numpty. All I'll do is remove my own lock and use another stand. Not exactly intellectually taxing is it?

Safe!
so when that person has ridden the 10 miles to the gym to go for a swim, they will have to turn around and head home again, as they cant lock thier bike to anything.
Did you lock to it, the money for a new lock?

Needless to say if i come across any of you mixing up the combination on MY lock i will take it back from you, and then smack you over the head with it..... and its a heavy one, which is why i dont carry it to and fro

Bloody well would, you lazy scruff! 😀

Personally I always carry my lock with me, don't really see the bind myself.

If you use a combi lock it's your own doing 😀

Not wise to leave locks lying about. The usual MO of the thief is to superglue the lock then nick the bike when the owner is forced to leave it unlocked.

Every now & again I like to go back on my post's & see how I come across to others...

Probably a bad idea to restart this one, but having thought about it (totally sober if that makes any difference) I would still do the same if I came across another one, I really dislike any form of litter, whether it be for someone else's purpose or not.

That's ok. I think I'll come round to your place, change all your locks while your out, then have a really good laugh about it to myself later.

I might even go on an internet forum and tell everyone what a fabulous wit I am...

I leave my lock on the car park railings outside my office, it's a heavy bastard that I'd rather not have to find room for on my commute every day.

I imagine it'd be quite nasty to get slapped with 😛

And you're calling me an arse? You, what thinks it's hilarious to fiddle with someone's lock?

What if the geezer had come out and given you a proper serious kicking, leaving you in hospital with a perforated lung and a ruptured spleen? And a fractured eye socket and smashed jaw? Would you think it so hilarious then?

What utter tosh, of course it could be removed,

1, by anyone with any feeling

2, by the council, or anyone with a pair of bolt cutters.

Shame the councils see this littering as low priority, to my mind it is just littering, or plain laziness, not sure which is worse.

Ooh he's called me a moron now! Excellent! 😀

Is your life really that sad and empty, are you really that inadequate and pathetic, that you get your kicks from resetting someone's lock so they can't use it again, just to make some misguided and pointless moral statement?

Ha ha! But we're not laughing with you; we're laughing at you. You weren't expecting that, were you?? Eh?

Your biggest mistake was coming on here and expecting to find support for your behaviour.

Your second biggest mistake was thinking you could ever possibly outwit the Elf...

Tell im to be'ave imself, someone... 🙄

I dislike people who leave locks on street furniture (bike sheds or work premisses are fine)

I have no erge to kill Fred (blatant lie)

I bow down to everyone who disagrees with me

😉

Oh, BTW Fred, when you re read this in the morning, you will see that I just wanted to re open a debate that, if I was vain, had lost some 10 months ago.

Just so you know, I don't care what the internet thinks about me, I can live with myself.

I reckon you should see someone professional about your insecurity and inadequacy issues.

See, I've done you a favour there, giving you that advice. One day you might thank me for it.

S'alright though; I don't mind being nice and helping folk out. Cos that's the kind, caring, sensitive soul I am. 🙂

You obvioulsy dont have to commute a large distance tne lock your bike up to street furniture. No way I am carrying a New York everywhere with me. I am reassured to know that one day a person of your impecable standards will add super glue the lock, leaving it unoperable, as a wonderful statement against littering.

Why would you leave a combination lock anywhere??? All that does is give thieves the time to crack the code at their leisure without them looking suspicious. Once they have stealing your bike is a quick job.
Not a good idea in my opinion, I reckon 2unfit2ride may have given said lock owner a wake up call in bike security.

You resorting to personal insults just proves I've done you. I'd say your best bet is to just slip quietly away now, and try to hope everyone forgets this unfortunate and embarrassing (for you) episode.

It weighs over 2 kg- fair amount to lug 32 miles to not offend you in the very short distance from your car to your destination

How about geeting annoyed at the lack of adequate secure cycle parking facilities in this country or the rate of bike thefts

Ive read through the post and like others have said, you could have done a number of things but chose to be a bit of an arse about it, if it bothered you that much you could have informed the gym or the council

ftw if I came across a random bod messing with my bike lock they wouldnt be using their wrists for 6 to 8 weeks, peoples morales can and do fall below what you perceive to be "littering"

What do you know about the owner of the lock?

I ask because when I lived in Dewsbury and worked for the YOT, we had a boy with fairly MLD and Autism involved in petty crime. Alongside social services we managed to get him set up working part-time at a local garden centre, which he would cycle to, and where a lock had been left to help add routine to his day. He'd ride to work, lock his bike up with the lock, work pretty much for free, and then cycle back home. And then some prick changed the combination to his lock, and panicking he left his bike unlocked because he didn't want to let down his work, and the bike was stolen, and he went off the rails in a fairly massive way.

Granted, this is a fairly extreme case, but your 'joke' is fairly hollow and meaningless. You could have put a note on it; or moved it elsewhere but left the combination unchanged. By not doing either of these things your behaviour becomes an example of dominance and controlling behaviour, which I'd consider fairly worrying if it was me...

Me? I agree with you about locks on street furniture, for the record. But I fail to see how you've taught anyone anything.

While changing the combination does seem like making a mountain out of a molehill, I'm rather more worried by the people who are suggesting that they would commit serious acts of violence over a bike lock. Hopefully, they're ridiculous keyboard warriors, as if they're serious, they really do have a bit of a hard think about their priorities and values.

When someone leaves a lock on a lamp-post, is it fair game to lock your bike there too?

I'm wondering if some people use it as a sign to say they've reserved that space, which is totally out of order, but some people are eejits and may lock your bike up with their lock if you 'stole' their parking place.
