Thinking of heading up the Pentlands tonight about 7.30ish from the Flotterstone end.
Can anybody show me the way round Castlelaw Hill and Capelaw Hill.
Cheers.

Can't go up but it's fairly easy to find.. Watch for a small gate on the right as your coming up the road, with a walkers sign-post, around NT 226 633, take the (reasonably steep) track up to the farm road, through gate on right, straight on towards farm, take trail through the trees on right just as you seem to be coming into the farm, straight on through timber gate & the Castlelaw climb starts at the top of the gravel car park in front of you - stony wide track which has seen recent 'improvements' further up.

Just stay on that until you start to descend & cross a gattle grid; about 300m further-on on the left (NT223 659) is a peaty short descent to another gate; over that then the trail that goes up to the right, or straight up the hill face if you've got the legs for it, as (not) shown here -

The (lower) trail round takes you to sight of Bonaly reservoir. Was sloppy round Capelaw last Tuesday, but it's probably dried reasonably by now - watch the wind though, swirls about a bit up there!

In the pic, why is everyone pushing up that bit?
Looks dry so no reason not to ride 🙂

That map thing is great, I don’t suppose you could plot a route for me on it, not sure how it all works or where I am going on the map. A route that does Castlelaw Hill and Capelaw Hill and brings me out so I can do Maidens too.
Many thanks if you can sort something out for me.

If you're going to do Castelaw, Capelaw and Maidens, I'd do it clockwise. so - along Glencorse to the corner, up Maidens (signposted for Balerno) to the col, take a right just before the wooden stile and big gate, over Harbour Hill and down to Phantoms then head straight up Capelaw (path is obvious and it'll be a push). That gives you the descent down the path in Robs photo, on to the big army track to your right and down to the Ranges. Through the carpark then the wee path (through a gate) between the farm buildings. Turn left when you exit that and you're back on the Glen Road to Flotterstone.

plot a route

Soz Bob - had a go but don't have time to work it all out... the paths are reasonably recognisable though, as long as you know roughly where you're trying to get back to there's generally a way.. 🙂

why is everyone pushing up that bit?

Can only speak for myself, but couldn't pedal any further up the slope 😐 Found a line to clean it a few months later though. L-R in the pic is 13thfloormonk (on a single-speed), AlecJohnstone, AlasdairMc and Paul Gillespie - I'm sure you can ask them directly 😐

Hi Chaps,
Cheers for all the info, I think I have done a route and saved it as a .tcx file, hopefully I can load it onto my Garmin but not sure. Will have a play about with it before the ride. And load the map up too......fnar fnar
I suppose you just have to get up there and ride round and see what happens really.
Cheers for the directs they were a great help when I was plotting my route.
Rob

There's a basic map down load able from the Rangers' website I think?

re: walking. All is forgiven, a second look at the pic and I see that is the direct up the hill route, I was thinking it was the one round the front, doh.
