Fact of life, there are some scum bags around.

my great aunt is in an unconscious state in hospital with fluids withdrawn (waiting to die) and someone has nicked the £20 note that was in her purse.

Washed away by a tidal wave crashing down the trail, more likely.

What do you expect?

Llandegla had to put someone actually on the road to collect off visitors as even honest people are shy to cough up. A box of money left outside that is much easier to break into than the BT phone boxes of old?...

The sad thing is I bet the thieves only got about £30? (total guess but I doubt it can be much more?!)

Why he persists in trying to cultivate those bloody American colloquialisms, I don't know. Should've been something like...

Could they not set up a justgiving page and ask riders to donate electronically. No chance of theft that way

Not a bad idea that DT. I suppose on balance the honesty box will work for them, even if it gets nicked once every couple of years. But, people, eh?

they'd end up paying JustGiving x% for every donation

You have 2 pound in your pocket, you chuck it in the box.
By the time you get to a secure internet you will have forgotten all about it.
Cash surely is the better option.
They just need either to use a better cash box or take the box away every evening.

Love the trails and always stick some dough in the box.... if it happens again I may think twice about sticking a note in though.

I do agree that an internet option is not likely to work so well, whenever i ride at Gawton I pay the day ticket online but it can be a bit of an effort...

Eskay... that sort of thing makes me feel very sad, thankfully the good guys still outnumber the scumbags.

Some form of donate-by-text scheme could work.. although I can't remember what the signal's like up there so that may not be such a great idea! 😆

Not nececeraly, honesty boxes are notoriously crap ways of raising money.

For example there was one in a local NT car park, it was never (ever) emptied as there was never any money in it.

Now there's someone on the gate to collect the 'suggested donation', and everyone pays. I've nrarely ever seen anyone walk upto the ticket desk at an NT property and not pay the 'suggested donation', and never if there's been a que behind them.

In the same way, how many people tick the 'remain annonamous' box on justgiving? If there's not someone to show off to that you're (or shame you into) donating, people are far less likey to donate. Heck, people will even post that they've donated to their facebook profile!

So they might lose out on the pocket change, but I bet they'd get loads more £5, £10, £20+ donations.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away (Well, South Devon in the 70s and 80s, but you get the idea) my family used to issue boat permits to permit people to leave their boats on our beach. People rang the ship's bell outside the house and one of the myriad children running around the house would grab the money receptacle and head to the front door The asking price? A donation to the RNLI. No suggested amount, but the number of notes stuffed in every day was always impressive!

There was a council up in Yorkshire that replaced its pay and display parking with an honesty box (I think it was legal or planning reasons). Anyway the takings actually increased! People seemed to be more likely to pay because they weren't forced to do so!

Well, I've never ridden there but I would donate a few quid to cover the recent loss if there was someway to do it online.
