My wife bought me some new cycling shoes today however I have always used SPDs with recessed cleats ala MTB style for all my bikes including MTB and road.

I now have a pair of rather nice Specialized expert RD shoes wiyh no pedal;s and cleats!

i start a LEJOG in a week's time so need to buy pedals and cleats quickly.

Looking at the bottom of the shoes there is three holes in a triangle pattern?

Look, time, Shimano and all the road pedals use the same fitting. I would say 105 level pedals are the best bang for your buck, shop around for some oe versions.

I think you're asking for trouble using new cleats/shoes/pedals for LEJOG. Just use your MTB ones.

+1

Road shoes/pedals are a tad lighter but that's it.

By all means use them, but not when your first ride's going to be over 800 miles!

I would go for Shimano R550 pedals BTW (bit nicer than the R540, and very similar to all the others in the range).

New shoes, pedals and cleats for LEJOG is asking for knee problems IMO
Wear what youve been riding..

Yup, she's wrong and we all said so. Good luck (with the wife not the ride)

I didn't get on with SPD-SL and much preferred Look Keo pedals, particularly for ease of clipping in.

I think that may just be me though.

Look Keo for me too. Tried Shimano, nothing wrong with them but didn't like them as much. I could sell you the pedals and cleats if you were interested 😛

Shimano every time for first time use. Easier to engage for the beginner, better bearings and cleats that aren't made of cheese.

This from a rider with seven sets of Look KEOS on everything from track bikes to a recumbent trike!

Damn, DT's bang on again - both times

I really wouldn't wear the new shoes for it unless you're really taking your time over it - I doubt the pedals would be a problem as long as you had some with float but brand new shoes, ...

How much riding can you do in them before you set off ?
How much road riding will you do after you've finished ? (might swapping them for some posh mtb shoes be a goer ?)

(where do you live? I could lend you some 550s and cleats but would only be worth it if you could collect - I couldn't post until end of the week which would defeat the object of getting some extra riding in)

Either:
A, don't tell her
B, tell her you don't want to ruin them

or:
C: tell her the truth, based on evidence.

D. You've ordered the pedals but they won't arrive in time unfortunately.

Whatever you decide, consider mine another voice in favour of Look Keo. I have Shimano on one road bike, and Look on the other, and I definitely find the latter is easier to clip in to.

Thx guys
I am going with the new ones. I fitted the planes shimano pedals and tried them on a short ride. Easy enough clipping in and out and the new shoes are so comfortable. The only issue i got was when setting off with one clipped in you pretty much have to get the other clipped in immediately otherwise you slip off the pedal!

Plus I have a contingency as meeting the wife at Shrewsbury 5 days in so if required could swap back then

You'll be fine I've always found road pedals best in road bikes and mtb pedals on mtb bikes..weird!

If you've never ridden spd sl before, be very careful at junctions. Takes a long time to learn to clip in quickly compared to mtb spds which are almost instant.

Look Keo for me. Just don't last too long if you have to walk in them (not sure SPD-SL would, either, though).

Definitely need to spend some time getting the position correct; even a mm (or less) off can really screw your knees over.

Wouldn't use for LEJOG (unless you can for certain get them right beforehand)

I used my mtb shoes & pedals for LEJOG, they were absolutely fine. It's the wrong ride to be trying out new kit.

I'd agree with all the "don't change things for Lejog" advice.

What's more, you'll find clip-clopping around in them every time you stop a pain in the arse (or worse if you're on a wet, shiny floor)

I see hundreds of LEJOG bikes every year - very few have road SPDs fitted.

I use MTB pedals on the road bike, the winner is being able to walk about.
Would be interested to know of a walking friendly lighter shoe/cleat/pedal combination.
